Dissapointing

Given that there is little information available on Muay Boran in any format, I decided to give this book a try. From the product description it sounded interesting at least, but after reading through it I was extremely dissapointed. The format reads more like a series of articles thrown together than a cohesive work. The translation to English is so poor that it makes it almost unreadable. I've never heard elbows referred to as "pokes" or hands referred to as "beaters." Or to paraphrase "to become master in thai art martial required of diligent practices." The whole book is written like that or worse. The pictures at times have no correlation with each other or are cut off halfway on the page, and there is no information on stances, footwork, or actual instructions on how to perform any of the techniques. Apparently the author thinks wearing shorts with "Muay Thai Boran" and wrapping his hands in rope make up for that. Like the review for De Cesaris's other Muay Boran book mentioned, he spends too much time talking about what a savior to the Thai martial arts he is. Funny I can't find any legitimate sources for all the titles he supposedly holds. There is nothing "advanced" about the techniques in this book, and nothing you wouldn't learn after several months of training at a Thai gym. Also, the book states it contains information on the Thai military art of Lerd Rit. Well, it does: A whopping half paragraph of writing and three pages of photos. If you are really interested in Muay Thai I would instead recommend Muay Thai Unleashed By Eric Krauss or Ultimate Muay Thai by Bob Spour. Solid fundamentals are what you build off of, and the techniques shown in those books are consistent with what is actually taught in Thailand. If you are still interested in Muay Boran, look for an ebook called "Muay Thai: The Art of Fighting." While the translation is poor, the pictures are clear and show basically every Muay Boran technique that is known. In short don't waste your money or your time on this book.

Advanced Muay Thai Boran inspired me.The information and pictures are excellent for advanced and people who are better then beginners. This book has a lot of solid information and is well written with perfectly easy to follow steps.For understand this book it is strongly racommended to read the other five books of the author to know and understand very well Muay boran and also basic notions

This book should be considered a bible to all martial artist and students who are serious about studying the Muay Boran. It is very informative and still up to date. As an Instructor I find this book as a great source of reference.

Her instructional book on polo is maybe the best written in the sport

Sunny Hale would have been the top female athlete in any sport she would have chosen. She has that intangible attribute that can only come from a lions heart combined with a humility that keeps her searching for ways to excel as a horseman and polo player. Her instructional book on polo is maybe the best written in the sport. It deals unique techniques dealing with mental approaches to the game that can apply to any sport. A truly entertaining read that deals with a colorful sport as well as the prime ingredient; the horse.

I recommend for any player looking to improve their game. Most helpful for me: Importance of developing tail shots, chapter on mallets, drawing fouls from players who do not take time to understand the rules. Thank you Sunny!

This book is easy to handle

This is not a really rule book, it's not a book full of theoretical informations about the game and team strategy. I think it's a typical american motivating book, this typical coaching stuff.
Keep your goals in mind -> go work at it -> and you will manage it!
This book is easy to handle, written easy to understand. Something to read on a long flight, touching all aspects on how to get better on your polo skills.
In my opinion it's no book for absolutly beginners, it's a book for low goal players with some experiences and experienced players who will get better.
But the really best of this new book is the fact that the author, Sunny Hale, is a really experienced player, a horsewoman who knows what she is talking about and she has a really good marketing group behind her, so her facebook is reacting inmediately on questions. I really appreciate this service. Sunny is a person she doesn't only want to earn money with this book, she really is interested in supporting the game of polo!!! I think that's more valuable than anything else in the world.
And like all good american marketing concepts it's the first book of a polo serie, so later we can read every chapter more deeply :)

Interesting Look At NFL San Fransisco 49er's Quarterback Colin Kaepernick

My foster son is a huge fan of the San Fransisco 49ers, but struggles with reading. I wanted to get him to actually sit down and finish a book (which he rarely does), so I started looking for a subject that would interest him. Wah-lah, this biography about Colin Kaepernick seemed to do the trick. Knowing little to nothing about this great quarterback of the 49ers, I thought I should probably read the book as well so I could test him on his knowledge. To my surprise he soaked up every single chapter of this book and was really excited for me to read it with him. To my surprise, this book was VERY interesting and extremely well-organized.

The book follows Colin's life in chronological order starting with his childhood and working into his professional career. Because my boy is in high school and sports are a huge part of what he enjoys about school- we both enjoyed reading about Colin's beginnings in sports and how he got started playing in high school. A lot of the book follows his professional career, though delving into his college years at the University of Nevada and moving onto his NFL career. I'm not the biggest football fan, but this book was written in a really interesting way. It did include a lot of statistics, but at the same time didn't overwhelm you with numbers. There was a STORY behind the numbers, and that's what made it an entertaining read.

I especially liked the last chapter which focused on the legacy that Colin has created and what the future may hold in store for him. He's obviously a brilliant sports star and learning about his life up to fame was very interesting. My boy is now full of even more San Fransisco 49ers trivia. There were a lot of things he knew about Colin before reading this book, but he did feel like he walked away with a lot of new knowledge. There were a few things that he was surprised to learn and he really did enjoy the book.

The book was well-written and easy to follow. Unlike some NFL biographies we've read together that were poorly organized and full of statistics but lacking any kind of substance- this book did a great job of not only providing you with the facts, but also giving you an amazing story that was definitely worth reading. Definitely one of the best NFL biographies I've read- and it certainly got my boy inspired to read, which earns it a definite 5 stars from me.

Very interesting read on the story of Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers. It chronicles his life from childhood and goes through all the highs and lows that made him one of the most notable players in football today. Clayton Geoffreys did a good job of gathering his facts, as well as making the book easy to follow and enjoyable to read. It's a short read but entertaining nonetheless. Highly recommended for football lovers and 49er fans alike!

I'm touched by this book

I draw a lot of inspiration from sports stories, so I was very interested in seeing what this book was about when I bumped into it. I did a little research on Colin Kaepernick before starting and that made me even more intrigued and ready to start.
The style of writing was really simple and I found it very entertaining to read. A lot of lessons to pick up from this one. I definitely would recommend this to anyone looking to have a good read.

Aaron Rodgers has been a quarterback worth watching in his NFL career. There was still a lot I didn't know. "Aaron Rodgers: The Inspirational Story..." showed that he was not a "jock", but an athlete with a passion for sports, a mind that was academically strong, and the motivation and determination to achieve dreams such as playing for top colleges and the NFL. While he did not get his first choice of the San Francisco 49ers, he has made a name for himself through his leadership and team approach with the Green Bay Packers. As one of the most notable quarterbacks of these era, he is an ideal role model. When I share this book with my teenage son, he will know that more as well. This book is full of stats and facts, but definitely interesting!

About the Author
Chef Zachary Golper opened his bakery Bien Cuit in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn in July 2011. It was named Best New Bakery by the Village Voice and made Best of 2011 lists in both the New York Times and New York magazine. National publications Food & Wine, Saveur, Harpers Bazaar, and USA Today have honored the bakery as one of the Best Bakeries in NYC and Best American Bakeries. Bon Appetit also selected Bien Cuit’s baguette as one of the top ten in America.

Peter Kaminsky’s cookbooks include collaborations with Daniel Boulud, Michel Richard, Francis Mallmann, and Sheila Lukins. His outdoors column has appeared in the New York Times for more than twenty-five years. Kaminsky has contributed frequently to Food & Wine and is the author of Pig Perfect and Culinary Intelligence. He is also one of the creators and executive producers of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Nice addition to my bread baking skills

I received this book in the mail without knowing about the exposed spine or the black pages. I took it as kind of an artistic expression what Zachary Golper is trying to do with the bread: expose the process, and bake it dark. So it's Artie's is not a big problem for me although I think it's kind of hipsterish. i think the black polished/painted edges are cool actually, but I'm against the black recipe pages because I can't easily take notes. My cookbooks are written on all over as I try things and maybe I'll have to buy a white pen to do that here. I have made three pretty complex breads so far, probably the three most complex ones in the book: 30 hour sourdough, 60 hour sourdough and Multi grain. I think the breads have been outstanding in flavor and texture. I'm an experienced baker so it's hard for me to know how a beginner might feel about the way the recipes are written, but I found them thorough and precise. I will eventually wander into the quick bread chapter and make some of the interesting scones and biscuits, but right now I'm super happy with the results.

so far, so good!

I just received my book. It was packaged appropriately (just like every book I've ordered from Amazon). Yes, the spine is exposed. I want to bake from this book, I don't care what it looks like on my shelf. Most of the books I bake from have broken spines and are covered in flour. I'm not careless, but I buy books to use them. The recipes look interesting and the images are beautiful.

I am in no way connected to the author or publisher. I buy lots of books on Amazon and rely on reviews. I understand people questioning the spine but to me it's not a problem.

I will update after I bake!

I really like this book

I really like this book. It surprised me. Aside from being an excellent book about baking, it is a good read---entertaining stories about the chef's career and development as a baker, and the authors' quest for good bread and good food in NYC. I read it cover to cover, which I have never done with a cookbook.The insights and useful tips clearly come from someone who has acquired his skills through hands on kitchen experience working with some of the nation's best bakers and chefs. The book is also packed with astonishing photography.The publisher's choice of binding (spineless binding?) was not typical, but this isn't the first time I have seen it...same as another (Amazon offered) cookbook, Polpo, written by a Venetian restaurateur in London.

I recommend this book to everyone - bikers, poets, couples and travelers. I embarked on my journey with Tony and Claire expecting a high quality story and got more. I enjoyed the story from two perspectives, with plenty of poetry rounding out the adventures on a tandem bicycle. I love Yorkshire - one of my favorite destinations, and plan to visit some of the sites highlighted. Well crafted, thoroughly satisfying.

Total Garbage

If you are looking for information on camping or wilderness survival look elsewhere. This book is complete garbage. Let me outline for you how the chapters of this baloney book go:
1) Navigation: It's important to know how to navigate. There's not enough time for us to tell you how though.
2) Making Shelter: It's import to know how to make shelter. There's not enough time for us to tell you how though.
3) Water Supply: Water is important. Good luck figuring out how to find clean water.
4) Campfires: There are several ways to start a fire. Good luck learning how to make a fire drill by yourself.

Do not waste your time. If you rely on this book, you will die...alone....in the wilderness....because this garbage isn't going to help you one bit.

The first fear that I had in my mind was about creepy looking insects..!!

It's my first time camping in the wilderness with friends and I am totally not at ease. Part of me is really excited about the fun and adventure and part of me is very anxious about facing unknown situations. So I was hoping to learn some survival techniques.

The first fear that I had in my mind was about creepy looking insects. Tips and tricks to ward off the insects and recognizing the poisonous plants was the first chapter that I have read and they seem pretty good. I also found the tips regarding navigation, purification of water,obtaining food and building shelter useful.

Appalled to strong a word?

Wow. I read through the first 5 chapters last night and was laughing and disgusted at the same time. The writing in this book is at best a high school level outline of a book idea at best. First aid advice is to have aspirin and a sewing kit incase you need to stitch someone up? Lots of berries abound if you need them to survive, but don't eat red or white ones? And the best, " core out a piece of tree root, fashion it into a bowl and then use it (a wood bowl?) to boil water for survival. I was amazed. Seems like the author looked a pictures in an old Ranger Rick magazine and tried to describe them. Really sad and obviously no effort.

Lamp Soup with Sour Cream

1/3 cup canola oil
10 oz. boneless lamb shoulder, trimmed and cut into ½” pieces
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 bay leaves
1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
2 tbsp. Hungarian hot paprika
4 oz. russet potato, peeled and cut into ½” pieces
4 oz. yellow snap or green beans, cut into 1” pieces
¾ cup sour cream, plus more for garnish
2 tbsp. flour
1 tbsp. coarsely chopped dill

*Serves 4-6

1. Heat oil in a 6-qt. saucepan over medium-high heat. Season lamb with salt and pepper; cook; stirring occasionally, until browned, about 8 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer lamb to a bowl and set aside. Add garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, and pepper to pan; cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic and onion are soft, about 15 minutes. Add reserved lamb, the paprika, and 4 cups water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until lamb is slightly tender, about 20 minutes. Stir in potatoes and beans; cook until lamb and vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes more.

2. Whisk sour cream and flour in a bowl until smooth; stir mixture into soup, and cook until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with a swirl of sour cream and a sprinkling of dill.

Mmmm Chocolate

I was told this is one of the only books to show you how to easily make your own chocolate from raw ingredients. I didn't really believe it, but on having a look online, it's true, there is very little information on actually making your own chocolate. There's plenty of books and websites on how to melt chocolate to make new shapes but that's not this book's main selling point.

The book starts out with info on chocolate, then has the main recipes on how to make dark, milk and white chocolate basics.

I volunteered and got involved with a facebook group to test out the recipes. I am normally someone who avoids spending too much time in the kitchen, but I soon got addicted. The ver first time I tried following the first recipe I didn't have a clue and didn't have half the proper tools for the job. I had no idea whether I was doing things correctly as I didn't know how the ingredients would react. Then I had to do it again and again and again as I wanted to get better. My colleagues like my new hobby as there I make far too much chocolate for me to eat. They always asked what liqueur I used, but it's just honey.

There are also recipes for the insides. My particular favourites are peppermint creams and the clotted cream mousse. Sometimes I'll make my own chocolate for the outside and sometimes I'll melt a cooking chocolate to make things easier. None of the recipes have loads of ingredients. They are really simple. I do advise on reading the recipe thoroughly beforehand, especially whether to use teaspoons or tablespoons. One recipe said up to 6 teaspoons of honey. I used 4 tablespoons!!!

There is a lot more info and help in the book such as troubleshooting, alternatives to recipes, what ingredients and moulds to use.

As a whole book, this one seems to cover everything you need to know about making chocolate (and a note on how to best enjoy chocolate) Be warned, it's addictive. I am awaiting more moulds so I can make even more chocolates.

Change your life!

I read this cover to cover before publication as I am one of a select band of recipe testers. I began tentatively, not sure if what I was being asked to do would produce anything I fancied eating. All I can say is – go with it. The business of spreading the ingredients, vigorous mixing and re-melting sounds like a faff but it’s quicker and less messy than making scones. At least, the way I make scones! Once you have perfected the technique you will never look back. You’ll start to think of your own variations and you will suddenly find you have an amazing number of friends who want to help you sample them and decide on the best!

If you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, if you just love eating wonderful chocolate in flavours you can’t buy, then you’ll love this book. I bought a few silicone moulds which each cost much less than a box of chocolates and now I’m addicted to making as well as eating the delicious stuff. The author has put a lot of time into trying out techniques and recipes and has put in all the ground work so that we can fly. The photographs are spectacular. This is a great book. I’m buying the paperback too, as soon as it’s available, because the photos are just too gorgeous and too colourful to hide away on a kindle.

About the Author
I was born in 1957 in Houston, Texas. I had a long career in the oilfields of South Texas, before going back to earn a business degree from Texas A&M University. Though I started as Class of '80, I finished as Class of '91. One of my favorite T-shirts says, "College, the 12 best years of my life!" and I mean it. Once I started back, I found it difficult to stop, earning an MS from A&M and a Ph. D. from the University of Colorado. I have served on the faculty of UTSA, Idaho State University, and the University of St. Thomas, in Houston. I have worked with a variety of marketing research firms to measure, analyze, and develop customer/brand relationships. I founded Storyed Solutions to provide marketing and management research solutions to industry and higher education. I have been married for over 30 years, to the same wife, and have three lovely daughters. I learned to surf, at 49, when we decided to move back to Texas, from Idaho. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. In Old Guy Surfing I share my learning experiences, along with strategies and techniques to keep old guys surfing into old age. I enjoy writing and have several book projects in process. Most of my work is based on research, or the application of business models to everyday life. Look for more books in the near future.
