About the Author
Kevin is the former president, lead trainer, and field team lead of the Alamosa Volunteer Search And Rescue team. He was a part-time instructor at Adams State University teaching Introduction to Search and Rescue. He has also served as a seasonal National Park Service ranger at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. He works as an English teacher at a high school for at-risk youth. He grew up in Evergreen, Colorado, and now resides in the San Luis Valley.

"Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst"

This book is a combination case study, textbook, memoir all rolled into one. It's a fascinating read with the author's eloquent descriptions that fill your head with vivid imagery, sounds, and the feel of the cold, windy conditions in the stories. Definitely a must-read for any person aspiring to go into the wilderness, as it's objective is to impart caution and preparedness on those who venture. "Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst".

Amazing great read!

Amazing great read! Search and Rescue by its nature requires a balancing act. This author exemplifies a great mix of compassion, protecting the safety of his team, respect for family of the victims, and of course rescue of those in crisis. He speaks of courage as being the willingness to put oneself in harm’s way as a means to save another. This sums up the SAR team’s commitment to be “your best friends on your worst day”.
This is written not as a literary wordsmith, but rather as a compassionate human being, complete with the blunt truths of this line of work. Not everything plays out as expected, including a point where the crew believes that their own death is imminent.
One of the clear goals this author conveys is the hope that this book is educational in causing those who venture into risky situations to have the knowledge, common sense, and skill to survive in a crisis. I know that I picked up a few important tips and I can use, and I hope you do to.

Awesome

Each morning, I awaken in Colorado's San Luis Valley. I live here. One of the first things I see as the sky lightens is the Blanca Massif, including Little Bear Peak, the setting of several of the chapters in Mr. Wright's book. His clear, no-nonsense manner of writing feels as crisp as the alpine air. We see, through his eyes, the immediate and the necessary, and when the action slows down, the beautiful and the peaceful. This book, filled with humanity, humility, and heroism, is a collection of both rescue and recovery, of lost and found. As I finished it, I looked up at the Sangres, and I realized that the sirens that call us are not restricted to the sea. The mountains call our names as well, and we are lucky that there are Search and Rescue heroes, to catch us when we fall. Thanks to Kevin Wright for an awe-inspiring book, and to all of the Search and Rescue folks everywhere.

From the Author
The original intent of this project was to feature the drawings and photos of Dick's many designs, which he was in the process of gathering when I was brought on board in 2008 to assist with writing his life story. My role was to record a series of interviews with Dick about his formative years and stitch those together as a cohesive narrative. A first draft was provided to Dick for review in 2009, but there was still much to do. Dick took on the task of fine-tuning the narrative, gathering images, and possibly adding an appendix of technical information with design notes and drawings--a tall order for a gentleman well into his 80s. From there, it went through several hands, with Dick incorporating his changes and others working to complete it after he passed. I am forever grateful to his widow Pat for graciously including my name on the cover, through she and the publisher deserve all the credit. It was an honor and a privilege to record his stories and to help preserve them for future generations.

Clear skies and full sails to you, Dick.

This lovingly crafted book details the life, dreams and accomplishments of master multihull designer and builder Dick Newick, from childhood through his years of family, travel and accomplishments to the end of his days. Accompanied by photographs and drawings, this story illuminates, for novice or pro sailor, a life in the creation and development of these boats as we know them today. Designing for cruising, racing or cargo, Newick melds the beauty of form, speed and light weight to produce boats that excel and delight. It is impossible to look at a modern multihull today and not see the touch of his brush and so he remains one of the cornerstones of the evolution of these magnificent vessels.

Quite Light

I wanted this to be more substantive than it actually is. As biographies go, it's a fairly light account, the book's primary source being a series of interviews that had been conducted with Richard Newick, which were recorded and then transcribed. The book reads little more than as an expansion of that, and a first draft at that.

The book would have welcomed the attention of an editor and a proof reader. Misspellings, formatting and factual errors abound. Although Newick's story is told in a chronological order, it never-the-less jumps about, with people and boats being mentioned in passing in the text, before they are actually introduced a few pages later on. The few photos and lines drawings are poorly reproduced.

There are several references to Richard Newick's ability to design craft that embody any two of the following qualities: economy, performance, accommodation, though at the expense of the third. Beyond that, the book offers precious little technical detail about his designs, and why it was that they succeeded. In this regard, the book would have benefited from commentary by a technically adept aficionado (Steve Callahan perhaps, as his article on Newick in "Professional Boatbuilder" magazine #122 was both well-informed and quite succinct).

A Legend!

I was a teenager in St. Croix U.S.V.I. when Dick Newick was there. I sailed on the AyAy with Bomba to Buck island several times, and personally knew almost everyone, and all the places, mentioned in St.Croix. The interesting thing is that I thought cruising catamarans and trimarans were everywhere, and I didn't realize that Dick Newick was such an incredible pioneer until much later in life. Now I am selling my 30' monohull here in San Francisco, and starting over with a 16' Prindle catamaran. Very enjoyable book and trip down memory lane. The YouTube video of his last build is impressive. The boat is going VERY fast, and when it slows to tack......there is almost no wind! Highly recommended for fans of sailing and multihulls.

This is one great cookbook. Lots of Italian-Mediterranean flavors

It deserves to be said right up front: this is a 4000/5000-level cookbook. If it were a college class, it would be the one with about 15 people in it, mostly exhausted grad students, with the entire grade being an original research project. Attendance will not be graded, and Smillie doesn't care if you have to pull an all-nighter to get it done.

That said, damn. This is one great cookbook. Lots of Italian-Mediterranean flavors, but compellingly unique and original in their composition - nontraditional, highly original, cheffed-up, and fascinating. Often the result is sort of a mutated, creative riff on something traditional, like paella or roast chicken or grilled fish, just familiar enough to hit the same spot but often rethought and reconstructed for maximum impact. The recipes are ruthlessly uncompromising in their commitment to technique and often span multiple steps over hours and days, but Smillie is a patient guide, and provides scheduled milestones for recipe completion. The instructions are detailed, and a committed intermediate home cook should do fine - but a breezy, easy cookbook this is not.

I find myself raiding this book for flavor pairings, ingredients, and ideas much more often than I actually cook the entire recipes straight through. I've done a few, yes, but my availability doesn't do this book full justice - and I am hardly a slavish recipe-follower in any case. However, as a source of ideas and culinary concepts alone, it's worth the price. I just did some chicken thighs with Smillie's rosemary-anchovy rub, indirect roasted on the grill. I'm sure his full thrice-roasted chicken recipe is better still, but just skimming off the rub and the ideas made for a really great dinner. You may wish to do the same until you have a winter Sunday free to throw yourself in. Either way, I think you'll find it worth it.

Beautiful Educational Cookbook for Foodies

This is beyond a doubt one of the most beautiful cook books I own, and it is incredibly resourceful to the point that I would call it educational. It is a heavy tomb of a cookbook, and it does require actually reading the information, which is not only informative, but written with a very eloquent hand. This book should be a requirement for anyone who loves cooking well, or for anyone who loves to cook for dinner parties. This is not a beginner cookbook, and it is not a cookbook you grab off the shelf to decide dinner, but that is absolutely alright. Because what it does do is provides manageable impressive recipes that the average cook can pull off with some thought and effort. This is important, because there are times we want to show off some skill, but aren't professionals, and this is the book that helps you do just that. The recipes are amazing, and I'll be honest prior to this review I could only attempt one of them. So you need to read, reflect, consider, and than choose what you will make. The ingredients, while long, are not so exclusive that you won't be able to locate them. Many of them you will have on hand. You will need to organize and prepare before making the meal, and make sure you have the time. But WOW when you pull it off you are going to impress everyone around. I highly recommend this book if you are a foodie or looking to take your cooking to the next level.

Happy tummy, happy life.

This book is perfect for a small intimate dinner between just a few people. The portion sizes are small so not necessarily the cookbook to get if you want to host large parties. But the recipes are beautiful, and the instructions and ingredients easy to follow and understand. I got this book for my husband for his birthday and his two favorite recipes are the ox tail and the grilled lobster. This makes a good gift for any man in your life who enjoy grilling, braising, or roasting. It is unique because the recipes are different from what you might get at a restaurant or see in other cookbooks. Definitely a good buy and one that our tummies are happy with :)

It was really easy reading. It really gave you the inside on what kind of person Mr. Watt is. Being a High School Football coach I am definitely going to buy this book in a hard copy and have my kids read it --- if they could work half as much as Mr.Watt they will be better players/people for it. Thank you Mr.Watt for being a great role model for young athletes every where.

About the Author
I was a lawyer until I quit. Six years in the practice taught me two very important things -- 1) I love to write (while it was motions, briefs, and arguments then, I still knew I had uncovered my passion in the written word), but 2) I don't like to do it in an office. Something told me I needed to get away, to travel, to sail, to live a different day every day and write about all of it. I now write full-time and spend the majority of my days cruising our 35-foot Niagara sailboat around Florida's west coast, the ongoing adventures of which I chronicle on my sailing blog, www.havewindwilltravel.com, and sailing books available on Amazon. I hope you lose yourself in my stories, find yourself in my characters and relish every page. I will keep writing and sailing regardless. It beats the practice at least. Enjoy!

A great book for anyone who wants to change their life

I am a sailor some some experience, and like the author I left a successful corporate life to sail. This book is an easy read, and she writes well. "Acknowledging my unhappiness was the easy part. The actual doing of something to change it was where I got stuck". Now there is more in this book than going sailing. It is about the pursuit of happiness, and the costs and rewards.

This is the second book by Annie Dike I have in my Kindle.
While I have not completed Keys to the Kingdom yet, I'm sure to have it finished over the Christmas holidays.
Annie's writing style easily pulls you in to the story as if you were actually there.
I highly recommend Keys to the Kingdom to anyone, even sailors. ;-)

More "Bon Voyage" Career than "Bon Voyage Annie

As an avid sailor and reader of anything on the topic, I was disappointed that this tale had less on the topic and way too much on her disenchantment with the practice of law. I'm thrilled she finally saw beyond her own illusions, jumped off the hamster wheel, and realized happiness comes from pursing the heart's desire more than chasing the expectations of others. But did we have to give birth to this revelation every other chapter? And with her purported love of writing, it was hard to get past the endlessly consistent grammatical errors with every attempt at utilizing the pronouns "me" and "I" or the use of malapropisms like "all intense and purpose." Alas, she did learn to guard the halyard-or keep it clipped at all times. Otherwise t'was a humbly humorous tale depicting the best kind of adventure.

Pressure Cooker saves a lot of time...

I bought a pressure cooker a few months ago. Its was a good deal which I didn't want to let go. Some of my cooking experiments went totally wrong and learnt that all the recipes are not user friendly which lead me to try the recipes of this book. I found the lunch and dinner recipes very easy and quick as well. Pulled pork sandwiches and carnitas turned out very delicious and they are my favorites. I don't regret purchasing the pressure cooker now which I did before.

When I saw this book, I just remembered my friends with their amazing and delicious dishes out of a pressure cooker. We always enjoyed even simple ones, they turned out to be really good, with special taste. Last weekend I bought a pressure cooker to bring a healthy option in our family cooking. There are enough recipes to try and enjoy, good choice for all meals of the day. We love this cookbook and our pressure cooker, meals are healthy and nice with it!

Achieving maximum flavor with minimum energy use!!

I feel that by cooking at home I can have control over nutritional value and quality of food. I have been looking for recipes that don't take much time. I have tried the breakfast recipes. They were quick, easy and delicious. Crustless quiche is my favorite. With the help of pressure cooker I don't have to spend much time and also learnt that with the help of few tips any recipe could be adapted to cook in the pressure cooker.

Tapply has Trout Eyes for You

The qualities of Bill Tapply's work which jump out are: (1) the craftsmanship of his writing - first class, and (2) the universal themes anglers have grown to know and love. Bill describes settings which transport our minds to the beloved dream-world of casting a dry fly to a large feeding brown trout. And he transports us from our real world of suburban spawl and traffic jams to our favorite escapes faster than 2 large aspirin.

The stories he tells in Trout Eyes, especially of his youth, embody a Norman Rockwell quality. A certain purity and innocence of a time past as rendered in this passage:

"As the winter nights passed, his boxes filled with flies. When I was a kid, there were very few evenings when Dad didn't put in an hour or two at the vise. And if I sat there quietly and waited long enough, he'd eventually pat his knee and invite me to climb up and time a fly or my own."

A boy sitting on his father's knee at the tying vise paints a classic image of the fishing tradition - knowledge being passed down from father to son.

Trout Eyes isn't just about trout either. One moment we are at the tying vise, the next Bill is covering the technical aspects of tippet material in the "X Factor." If forced to pick from the various stories that comprise this book, my favorite short story would be "Thinkin' Mean." The story appeals to me on a couple of levels. First, as a long-time fly fisherman, I can relate to the hard won knowledge that it makes to master a complex mayfly hatch on water like the Willowemoc. But more importantly, it's a story about one of the golden rules we as anglers should live by. (By the way, there's a least three other unwritten golden rules for angling.) And this golden rule is simple: to share your knowledge and insight with others (a.k.a. the secret fly). So, Bill if we should ever share the same water and I mange to hook all the fish, I'll be sure to throw a "Cigarette fly" your way.

Comfortable As An Old Shoe

Tapply's stories are outdoor experiences that could happen to any sportsman, not just those who can afford exotic trips and high-end lodges. He brings a warmth and genuine love of the sport to his writing. Not all the memories are of big fish; some are of the ones that got away, broken rods, horrendous weather, and everyday mishaps all fly fishers encounter, as well as rememberances of great guides and beautiful locations. My only criticism of this book is these stories are mostly repints from magazine articles, therefore they are fairly short. Tapply is such a delightful storyteller I wish his tales were a bit longer.

The Tapley saga

The book was typical Tapley .It is easy reading and flows like a fiherman telling his adventures to other fishermen. We understand what he experienced and can see what he saw when he was writing each story. He tried not to add a lot of blow and made it believable. If you read his fathers stories and then flow into his it is hard to seperate them if you don't look at the author first. I have several of his and his father's and they are tops.
