True Muay Thai Boran

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in martial arts. This book is about Muay Thai Boran not the form that most people are familiar with, but made popular by Martial art Movie star Tony Jaa. It starts out with a detailed account of how they gathered information about the Martial Arts of Thailand. Then it goes into an explanation of the development of the art/sport of Muay Thai, and the different regions of Thailand having their own styles for the art. At the end is where the author explains moves and combos based on the traditional Muay Thai Boran, which is different from the Muay Thai form that most people recognize. Overall it is a very interesting read and an amazing source of history and information for this relatively unknown form.

Good Book but could be better

I think the book was originally written in another language. If I'm not mistaken the original was written in Italian. The content of the book is informative if you can get pass the direct to English translation. In addition, The book feels like a compilation of articles that the author had published in magazine. Therefore, it didn't really have a good flow from one chapter to another.
I was expecting a bit more pictures illustrating the Muay Boran Technique along with explanation. There are a few, but not as much and clear as I like.
I would've given it a 4 star if it weren't for the stuff I mentioned above.
In any case, a good collection to have in the book case if you collect martial arts books.

English as a mangled language

This book needs *massive* editing to be readable. I had to reread many of Ms. Davidson's sentences several times and even then was not always sure what she meant. For example, under the heading 'types of preppers' she states: "There are many types of preppers. There are two types of peppers including short and long term." Is it two or many? I always thought that the count went one, two, a few, several, a dozen...

I managed to get to the chapter on dehydrating and the first thing I noticed was that the author did not give any guidelines as to how thick to cut your meat. I have been making jerky for decades and you MUST have even, thin slices in order to properly dehydrate the food. No mention is made of cutting your items evenly, and if you have thin slices and thick chunks, the thicker pieces will not be fully processed and may harbor bacteria. Not a good thing.

In the recipe for goulash, Ms. Davidson directs you to put the cooked goulash in a sterilized jar but makes no mention of processing the jars. Perhaps you are to eat the goulash immediately? I certainly would prefer a soup bowl.

If you are seriously considering canning any foods, I would recommend that you pick up a copy of the Ball book - at least if you plan to eat the finished product.

Many of these recipes use fresh ingredients such as raw shrimp, beef, milk, rotisserie chicken, and sausage. I doubt that any of these would be available in an emergency situation.

I suppose I can't complain about the price (it was free) but this shows, once again, that you get what you pay for.

More than disappointed!

I bought this book in paperback format because I do not have a Kindle. Despite the one review about the poor use of English, I thought the 30 recipes may be good to use for canned or dried food preparation. Save your money! There are typos in the recipes as well! The baked ziti recipe calls for "1" ounce of ziti for a full recipe! Also, most of the recipes do not even consider a survival situation. They are simply "meals that fill you up for long"! You can learn more from five minutes doing a Google search. I wish I could return this book. Disappointed in a rural area.

I quite enjoyed reading this novel! R. A. Abram takes the first person viewpoint and uses it to show the depth of character of Radu, his thoughts and motivations, skilfully--and this is a rare thing. There tends to be a lot of exposition, and the start is slow, but I quickly got drawn into the story. I loved the fantastical elements in an otherwise earth-based novel, like the ‘monsters’ that changed Radu’s life in the beginning and set him off on his journey.

The plot is full of twists and turns, and I found myself surprised at some points. I like how the author wove Romanian culture and mythology into this story, to create an interesting read and one I would recommend!

I read this book as part of a review swap organised with Rachel, but I do not otherwise know her in any form, be it in real life or online, and this review is completely impartial and unbiased.

A very well written story, from begin to end. Very clean and well-structured text. I tried to imagine an actor to play the main character Radu and the one that keeps coming to mind is Benedict Cumberbatch. Being a super-natural creature has its advantages after all and not necessarily means one has to be super-evil. Radu’s mother indeed knew her son’s heart since an early age. The problem is, Radu is rather the exception in his own race; others who share the same DNA – if they happen to have that - and background may not be very fond of such a revolutionary among them…I had fun with this book and look forward to the sequel.

Bruce "Buck Nelson's new book, "Alone in the Fortress of the Bears" is a fascinating account of his 70 day "living off the land" survival trip in southeast Alaska. Few people possess the outdoor survival skills and knowledge necessary for completing such an adventure and fewer still possess the mental and physical fortitude required to put up with the hardships and loneliness encountered on a trip such as this. Buck handles all with apparent ease.
I had a hard time putting the book down once I began reading. I rationed it by reading only 2 or 3 chapters a day to make it last longer. Some books written in journal or diary style can be a chore to read. Not this one. It's well written and the story flows easily in his matter-of-fact style of writing. It's as if you are alongside Buck. You quiver with anticipation as he pulls up his crab trap to find what is inside. Your heart pounds as he wades through tall grass, having spotted a brown bear just ahead. You tremble with excitement and trepidation as he fights a monster halibut from his inflatable kayak. He intersperses his tale with related experiences from his past which further increases the appeal of this book. If you're an outdoorsman, or if you like tales of adventure or both, you will love this book.

A lot of Smokejumpers liked hunting, fishing, hiking and travel, but this unpretentious bachelor Norwegian farmer is the only one that could have hung with Lewis and Clark. After reading about one of his other adventures, I contacted Buck with a quote from another great writer and lover of this beautiful country America:
"Now I see the secret of the making of the best person
It is to grow in the open air and to eat and sleep with the earth.
Here a great personal deed has room
(Such a deed seizes upon the hearts of the whole race of men,

Outstanding! Now THAT is how to write a book about the outdoors.

I was really impressed with "Alone in the Fortress of the Bears". It’s fitting that Buck’s latest adventure produced such a well written book. He does a wonderful job of recreating the survival experience with his vivid descriptions of the flora and fauna of Admiralty Island, and is particularly good at including the reader in the interesting detail of how to stay alive in the backwoods. But, the best is yet to come; it’s Buck’s straightforward and genuine approach. You never get the impression that he is the centerpiece, it is the remote island, the stunning scenery, the wildlife, and the survival experience that is front and center. If you love the outdoors, look no further.

Mistitled, Misleading, but Highly Entertaining

The Last Headbangers is an interesting and entertaining book that is not what its title claims it to be. It traces NFL history in the 1970's from Franco Harris's "Immaculate Reception" in December 1972 through Dwight Clark's "The Catch" in January 1982, the book looks at how the NFL began the transition to the financial and sporting juggernaut it is today. It does so through the story of the Oakland Raiders and the Pittsburgh Steelers, bitter rivals and arguably the two dominant teams of the era. Other teams pop up only in terms of things that happen to the Raiders or the Steelers. It may be Super Bowl/playoff opponents (Miami, Dallas, Minnesota primarily)

"Headbangers" does offer a clear explanation of the rules changes that went into effect to open the game up, and explains how bringing in the hash marks, moving the goal posts, and an array of rules that protected quarterbacks and freed wide receivers led to a more open game and ultimately to the rise of the West Coast Offense.

Using the Steelers and the Raiders changes in tactics and rules are traced and examined. Raider lore plays into the story with "the Sea of Hands", the "Holy Roller", and "the Ghost to the Post". The internal challenges faced in Pittsburgh of playing for Chuck Noll and the incredible 1974 draft that set up the Steelers for the balance of the decade.

Description of football games is excellent, especially if there is a tactical flare or special point involved-especially if it involves the Steelers or the Raiders. The analysis of how the rules changed defensive tactics (like the move to the Cover 2 defense) is nicely done.

"Headbangers" gives an excellent feel for how the NFL game transitioned from the running focus of the game through the 1960's and into the passing game now dominant in the league.

Despite all this, I only give it three stars...and that is because of what I saw as some distinct flaws in the book.

First, there is in the title vis-a-vis the actual focus. I am not a fan or foe of either the Steelers or the Raiders. I am a Washington Redskins fan, and remember that the decade in review was a time when the 'skins had George Allen as coach (and his paranoia with Dallas) the Over the Hill Gang (veterans who used every dirty trick in the book) the Thanksgiving Day Massacre loss to the Cowboys after knocking out Roger Staubach and falling to the arm of Clint Longley, the regular season final game loss in 1979 to the Cowboys when after the game Harvey Martin (I think) tossed a funeral wreath into the Redskins locker room....any of these things were in keeping with the "Rowdy, Reckless" theme of the title, but none were mentioned. In fact, this book would make you think the only rowdy and reckless teams were the Steelers and the Raiders...and even then mostly the Raiders. There is an occasional mention of "rowdy, reckless" players outside these two teams-how can you talk the 1970's and not mention Conrad Dobler?-but it is minimal.

Next, the Raiders are treated extemely gently for a team that gloried in their outlaw image. There is no mention of Kenny Stabler's alleged set up of a sports writer (who was critical of his play)for a drug arrest-an allegation that still stands as an obstacle to Stablers Hall of Fame candidacy. Legendary plays of the Raiders are rolled out like old friends, but plays equally famous in the time (like the SD Hook and Ladder) are not ignored.

The transisition to the West Coast offense is treated as if it happened overnight. Air Coryell in St. Louis and San Diego was the transition link from three yards and a cloud of dust to the WCO, but is not mentioned.

Finally, after spending 250 pages or so covering the period from 1972 to 1982, the author then tries to capture the next thirty years in one paragraph. It makes for a jumble of facts that lack any thread or theme. It is as if the author has an a host of facts so he just throws them at the reader. An example...the author notes that in the late 1980's the Steelers had risen in value to $150 million, and that is was the least valuable franchise in the league. Why? How did it happen? Could it have been because the Rooney's were a football family, and did not come into the game with a fortune from some other business? Facts like this are just dropped in without any clarification or analysis.

Ultimately, an interesting book but not one that truly addresses comprehensively the theme as suggested by the title. If you are interested in sports in general or NFL history a good but not thorough read. If you are a Steelers or Raiders fan, this book "awakens the echoes". Three Stars.

also missed some great '70s stories

Don't get me wrong, there are some nice nuggets in here (who knew Minnesota Vikings' coach Bud Grant won an NBA championship with the Minneapolis Lakers in 1950 or that Chicago Bears player/owner [say what?] George Halas held the record for longest runback of a fumble for 49 seasons?) and the book is a breezy easy read. The problem I had with this book is many fold. There was way too much emphasis on dissecting the actual Super Bowl games (often the most boring games of the NFL season especially in the '70s), way too much focus on the Pittsburgh Steelers (I get it, they won four Super Bowls during this era, but there were chapters after chapters on the buildup of that team) and, lastly, the book tacks on stuff on the early '80s emergence of the Bill Walsh era San Francisco 49ers. The latter is all well and good but look at the subtitle of this book. Why leave out so much great grist from the '70s for an intro on the Niners of the '80s?

With the author focusing so much attention on the Steelers vs. Raiders playoff rivalry he completely left out, or brushed over, such fanastic '70s topics as:
--the Over The Hill Gang Washington "Ramskins" under coach George Allen
--the merger and radical divisional realignment in 1970
--the Rams' Jack Youngblood playing on a broken leg in the Super Bowl
--the fall of the Green Bay Packers post-Lombardi and Lombardi's move to the Redskins
--O.J. Simpson 2,003-yard rushing season and the Electric Company
--the local TV blackout rules and the term no-shows coming into vogue
--introduction of sudden-death overtime in regular season games
--early Air Coryell in St. Louis with the Cardinals
--the Baltimore Colts era of QB Bert Jones
--1976 expansion and the exciting QB Jim Zorn-led Seattle Seahawks and the ex-USC John Mackay coached Tampa Bay Buccaneers going 0-26 before winning a game
--introduction of the 30-second play clock
--introduction of wild card playoff teams

Also, what was the deal with Oakland Raiders' linebacker Phil Villapiano? He did talk about other more significant Raiders but what was up with following his post-Raiders career on Buffalo? Was that relevant to anything at all? As a Raider fan I love Villapiano but did he warrant more ink than other Raiders?
For all the Raider talk the Ghost To The Post OT playoff game in 1977 vs. the Colts was given barely a thought considering Coach John Madden often refers to it as the best game he ever witnessed let alone coached in.

How about slicing down the Villapiano and telling us all about the wild 1970 season when 43-year-old George Blanda either kicked or quarterbacked the Raiders to come-from-behind victories (or ties) in five consecutive games?

The author went on and on about the significance of Monday Night Football which was spot on but didn't even mention NFL Today--virtually the only NFL pre-game show that had the iconic crew of Brent Musberger, Phyllis George, Irv Cross and Jimmy the Greek.

Weirdly, with the author's obsession with the Steelers he got the Jim Gilliam story in there but missed the whole Chuck "Ground" Knox LA Rams and their far more significant introduction of an African-American quarterback in James Harris who was actually good and an All-Pro. Wasn't it worth a chapter on the Rams for both the revival under Knox after the iconic George Allen left, the 1973 NFC MVP season of John Hadl who many thought was done when he left San Diego and most importantly the Rams' constant playoff failures?

Basically, there's more left out than in with this book on '70s football. Shame because this author does write some compelling text.

The Last Headbangers

Anyone who has an NFL team or player they like to watch -- or one they like to hiss -- will get a kick out of Kevin Cook's entertaining look back at one of the sport's most interesting decades. The players were underpaid and virtually unprotected, rules were there to cheat on, rivalries were intense and personal. And the cast of characters was unique and colorful, and ranged from the gentleman to the maverick to the thug. Cook does a great job of putting together the personalities and the politics with the action on the field, retelling some of the legendary plays of that era (the "Immaculate Reception", for one) with comments from the players involved. You can be behind the scenes at Monday Night Football, and read of the jokes and hijinks in the locker rooms. You also hear the bad side: the brutality and sex and stupidity, and the terrible toll the game extracts from its players even today. If you're looking for a good read or a good gift, this could fill the bill.

Fabulous insight into former Washington Coach Don James

But James' true genius was his ability to inspire, teach and lead the hundreds of young men entrusted to his care. In "Thursday Speeches," author Pete Tormey, a former James student, offers a rare and illuminating glimpse into how the iconic James so successfully motivated his players and brought more out of them than even they ever imagined possible. Mr. Tormey received exclusive access to the exact words James used to mold nearly two generations of young men and build a dynastic college football program in the process. Mr. Tormey had the athletic gifts and privilege to play for one of the greatest college coaches of all time. Mr. Tormey's account is a blueprint for building a national championship team from just one in the crowd. The genius of James success is revealed in his organizational and leadership methodology. "Thursday speeches" is the tip of spear. Great job!

Not for everyone, but it is perfect.

The book is perfect just as I've heard her restaurant is, and yet, the criticisms in other reviews are spot on. But that doesn't mean its not a perfect book, it just means that you need to know what you're getting in to. The recipes are complicated, the ingredients are occasionally near impossible to find (sodium hexmetaphosphate?), and there are so many alternative techniques (oven v. dehydrator v. ?) given that you are overwhelmed by the print on the pages. But stop. Take a deep breath. And now look again. Each recipe contains a well-written explanation of how to make the dish work. It is not a dish you're going to add to your family meatloaf, but it is something that you would do to impress your friends, and yes, it will stretch your abilities. But, Crenn walks you through the steps clearly and with the internet you can find any ingredient no matter how unpronounceable.

I do think this book is best fit into the collection of a chef or a collector of amazing restaurant cookbooks, but for avid home cooks, you'll enjoy it as well. Do the "Look Inside" thing and decide for yourself, but it is a perfect book.

The Best Book I've Ever Had.

I've been waiting for years for a book by Chef Dominique Crenn. I didn't know what to expect and was afraid that this would be just like any other cookbooks out there by great chefs. When I received this book, I spent the whole day reading and re-reading from the first word to the last. This is THE BEST BOOK I've ever had.

This book has a unique texture to its cover which I like. It is very organized, easy to understand and has very clear instructions. All the recipes had both metric and Imperial measurements which I greatly appreciate. I could feel a lot of emotions in this book. It is personable, it is intimate. It is generous.The chef's passion, creativity, talent, philosophy, love can be felt and is inspiring. I love how she made an effort to explain every single recipe in the book, her thoughts and how and why the dish was created. Ingredients, equipment, methods, right up to how it is being plated at Atelier Crenn were all clearly stated.

As perfect as it is, I didn't see some of the spectacular dishes being featured in the book. Perhaps, there would be a 2nd book and those would be featured then? Looking forward to a 2nd book.

This book is for people who appreciate and truly understand the philosophy of cooking and the real essence of cuisine.

Buy it, it's as good as you hoped it would be

Fantastic, she truly inspires me and this book does a good job of conveying the high levels of dedication and work that goes on in restaurants like that. Worth it for the pommel soufflés recipe and for Juan Contreras incredible pastry techniques. That guy has been an enigma to me and I finally get to see some of his recipes. They're as original and inspiring as I hoped they would be. My favorite pastry chefs are ones that have been trained on both sides of the kitchen and take the savory mentality of seasoning and contrast and translate it into the pastry world. Little things like using chamomile, sage, rhubarb etc. as accents. Crenn's writing is a bit tedious in its over-explanation of things, as well as her repetition of certain worn out points that too many chefs expound on (like the contrast of classical and modern techniques and the inspiration of childhood memories in creating dishes.) These ideas are part of the lexicon of haute cuisine now and don't need another essay written on them. However most of her insights are marvelous and her childhood life is so pastoral and special that I did love reading about it. I still give it five stars because at the core the food is that good and that interesting.
