As this volume amply illustrates, Ruger is undoubtedly the most innovative American firearms designer and manufacturer of the latter 20th century and could honestly be described as a living legend in that field. As the subtitle states, this heavily illustrated volume offers a multifaceted portrait of the man and his creations. Ruger built his firearms empire by marrying the old-fashioned with the modern and improved on standard designs by pioneers Colt and Browning to produce high-quality shooting irons at reasonable prices. But along with ingenuity in design, it also took a certain bravery to release single-action handguns and single-shot rifles in a market dominated by double-action and semiautomatic weapons. His gamble, however, paid off. Wilson (Steel Canvas, LJ 1/96) offers much biographical information on Ruger plus the background, history, and statistics for each firearm made by Sturm, Ruger & Co., with numerous superb color photographs. Wilson presents how a man's hobby plus a meager investment in 1949 grew within a span of 45 years into an industrial powerhouse, outselling all of its competitors. This is a companion volume to the author's three other popular works: Colt (1986), Winchester (1991), and The Peacemakers (1993). The quality of the hundreds of illustrations is comparable to the other volumes, but in an attempt to capture its multifaceted subject, there are quite a few collage-style photos that contain so many components it is difficult to decipher the individual elements. Extensive reference tables provide serial numbers and years of manufacture for every model produced. A must volume for collections dealing with firearms and business history. Fred Egloff

This book is perfect for anyone interested in the history of Sturm, Ruger and Co. The information is presented in a very organized fashion. I highly recommend this book at twice the price.

An Excellent Addition to any Gun Collectors Library

In 1949, just after World War II, all of the gun manufacturing companies faced a problem of selling guns in the commercial market. The Government had extensive stocks of guns like Endfields, Springfields, Colt .45's and of course any number of foreign guns and were beginning to sell these guns on the commercial market. It was obviously a stupid time to go into the gun manufacturing business.

In 1949 Bill Ruger entered the gun business with one gun being manufactured by a very small company. The gun was the Ruger.22 Standard Pistol which was an instant hit and is still in production as the Mark III. Every few years since then there has been a new gun from the folk at Ruger, each of which has pioneered new design principles that has made nearly all of the guns a success.

In this book, R.L. Wilson has produced a masterpiece of a book that describes all of the guns produced by the company as well as a history of the company and the man. It's an excellent addition to any gun lovers library.

BOOK IS ALL I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE! WELL-WRITTEN, COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE MAN AND HIS COMPANY, HIS DREAMS AND IDEAS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. IT'S INTRIGUING TO READ THE BACKGROUND OF A PERSON WHO HAS CREATED SO MUCH AND BEEN A PIONEER IN THE AMERICAN FIREARMS INDUSTRY AND, JUST AS INTERESTING, TO UNDERSTAND THE MINDSET AND DETERMINATION AND SACRIFICE IT TOOK TO REACH HIS PLACE IN HISTORY. AND, THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TECHNOLOGY AND ART OF STURM RUGER FIREARMS IS FASCINATING. REALLY GLAD I BOUGHT THE BOOK.

Ron Balicki has personally been trained. taught and fully certified by Sifu Dan Inosanto (the only person alive in the world certified by Bruce Lee to teach his art and philosophy of Jun Fan Gung Fu - Jeet Kune Do). Ron moved to Los Angeles in 1993 to take on the job of instructor and manager of the world's number one place for Jeet Kune Do "Inosanto Academy". Ron has fought professionally both in the USA and Japan. Ron has worked as a bodyguard for various Hollywood movie and music stars including Steven Seagal, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) and Public Enemy. Ron has also worked on countless movies and music industry projects as a stuntman. He is also the author of numerous articles for magazines worldwide.

A decent introduction to knife fighting.

I'm not a huge fan of Balicki's work, but this first volume of the Defensive Edge is not bad. The concepts are solid and practical. This volumes provides a well organized section on fundamental gripping, movement and knife engagement skills. I will say that some of the offensive and defensive tactics are a little advanced for an introductory text, and caution should be taken when implementing these suggested responses. Overall, as an initial offering of a continuing series this is a decent start.

A good training aid

A good training aid, which is it's intent. Covers many of the fundamentals needed to learn knife work. And thankfully he's honest and realistic in his approach of how serious a knife attack is. It is largely Philipino based (which makes sense if you know Ron's background), but whether or not you like them as a whole Philipino martial arts do have a lot to offer in knife fighting. My background is not in Kali, but I still appreciate what it has to offer. Take what you like, leave what you don't.

Not a technical "How To" book...

I am just getting into reloading and was expecting some helpful information for reloading from this book. It is not a "how to" book in any way. After being disappointed in the bulk of the book, where I thought there would be reloading procedures and guidance, I thought there would at least be a redeeming portion in the back in the section showing loads. But the "loads" are not really loads at all! It just shows different lengths of barrels and what specific weight and types of bullets the author got to shoot accurately from that barrel. But it doesn't tell you what kind of powders he used or what amount. Not at all what I was looking for in a reloading book. **What this book does, is talk about the authors years of reloading experience. both failures and successes, and it also gives a lot of history regarding reloading, and different cartridges.

Pigott describes himself as a "gonzo journalist."This means he is a follower of writers like Tom Wolfe and Hunter S. Thompson who re-defined "non-fiction" in the 1970's by including themselves as characters in the stories they told.

Pigott's story is about wine-making (and he has the credentials to do that topic justice). But just as Hunter Thompson did not just write about politicians and Tom Wolfe did not just write about astronauts, Pigott is not just writing about wine. He is writing about what makes people tick, and that includes Maynard James Keenan and the other odds-defying people making wine among a few fertile pockets in the Arizona desert.

Pigott is also a European, having been born in England but also having spent many years in Germany. He brings the eyes and ears of an outsider to America, and that, too, is part of why we should pay attention to what he says about Americans. Just as we paid attention to what de Tocqueville and Dickens wrote about Americans.

Gonzo journalism works when the writer; 1) possesses a depth of understanding about the subject; 2) knows where to draw the line between the "writer-as-subject" and the "subject-as-subject"; and 3) is likeable, entertaining and, in this case, not afraid to make fun of himself. Pigott checks all these boxes.

You do not have to enjoy wine (or wine writing) to enjoy this book. It is as much about American culture as it is about whether or not it makes sense to plant Syrah in the Sonoran desert.

Kind of dry reading based on his tapes and log . But being as how I am a small boat blue water sailor it was a must read. Little breeze was for sale here in Hawaii a couple years ago. Hope who ever bought her gave her a good home!

Amazing little boat. Amazing mariner.

I have the next larger size to this Montgomery 15 so wanted to find out what works for this hull design. Some good information but a slice of the narrative was just repetition of a very succinct long log entry.

!Must Have Children's Cookbook!

I have been on the hunt for a children's cookbook that children could really use and this is it! There is a nice variety of recipes along with a variety of skill levels. The hints are great for parents not used to cooking or not used to cooking with their children. I can't wait to make Ava's Amazing Penguins with my grandnephew! How wonderful that there are also youtube videos for those visual learners! Thank you Heidi Fannin and your fabulous helpers; great job!

This cookbook has super easy recipes that kids can feel confident using to start cooking on their own! Love the YouTube links at the bottom of each recipe! I look forward to watching my kids try all the recipes and being their assistant in the kitchen. Thanks for the inspirational words to teach our kids how to cook at a young age!

I love the Kitchen Kidz book! The videos are very engaging for my 8 year old son. They are easy to understand and very simple to make. The recipes are uncomplicated and overall a good book for younger kids just getting into the kitchen!

My husband has got this box set, as all in our family love sweets and ready to eat them more than three time a day. This offer is the best one I could ever have for baking all kind of sweets. Five books in one set are worth having as ultimate “sweet” cookbook. There are delicious and simple recipes, many of them are with photos. I find many of them easier and faster to cook. The variety is just amazing: gluten-free and low-carb muffin, cheesecakes, breads, pastries, cookies and donuts. We’ve tried few recipes, all turned out nicely. Happy sweetest desserts to everyone!

Happier camping!

My childhood camping experiences, many years ago in a distant land, involved a lot of unpleasantness. Tent camping has come a long way since then, and I still do it occasionally, but this year I decided that I'm ready for camping luxury. Searching for online guidance I came across the Diva, whose first camping experiences were not joyful either. She found that adding the right home comforts enabled her to find her camping style. That's what I want, too. I might even want to glamp!

The book was useful for me in several ways. Primarily, what kind of camping? I was toying with the idea of an RV and found the Diva's discussion of pros and cons helpful in making me think hard about what was involved. She includes various flavors of camping along with what you need in order to do them, with helpful lists and tips. Speaking of flavors, the Diva is obviously a good camp cook so I'll try her recipes.

Technological innovations have hit the outdoor recreation world hard, for better and worse. Last year's wonderful (and expensive) new products that ensure greater comfort and safety will inevitably be outdone by this year's. Sometimes cheap is good and sometimes it's worth paying megabucks. Buying even the simplest stuff can take a lot of research if you only want to buy it once. I appreciated that the Diva did a lot of legwork here, investigating all kinds of products.

Seasoned RV people don't need this book, although they might enjoy it - it's fun to read. I'd recommend it for anyone who has never camped before, anyone who has had the kind of camping experiences that are only fun to talk about in retrospect, anyone who would like to try a different type of camping, and anyone who just likes to get in the camping mood by reading books about it.

Well-researched and thoughtfully written, this book is an absolute gold mine of information! Also, the author's humility and sense of humor throughout make it an enjoyable and fun read. I consider this a "must-have" guide book for both novice and experienced campers. Also, a great gift idea for all who love the great outdoors!

Comprehensive triestie on early golf architecture

If you didn't like the recent reprint of "Spirit of St. Andrews," take heart; this book is the one that was published during Dr. MacKenzie's lifetime for a reason.
The book is well organized, and Dr. MacKenzie obviously used a good editor to help him. I wouldn't purchase both books, and I would choose this one rather than the over-hyped "Spirit"
