About the Author
Ron Balicki has personally been trained. taught and fully certified by Sifu Dan Inosanto (the only person alive in the world certified by Bruce Lee to teach his art and philosophy of Jun Fan Gung Fu - Jeet Kune Do). Ron moved to Los Angeles in 1993 to take on the job of instructor and manager of the world's number one place for Jeet Kune Do "Inosanto Academy". Ron has fought professionally both in the USA and Japan. Ron has worked as a bodyguard for various Hollywood movie and music stars including Steven Seagal, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) and Public Enemy. Ron has also worked on countless movies and music industry projects as a stuntman. He is also the author of numerous articles for magazines worldwide.

A decent introduction to knife fighting.

I'm not a huge fan of Balicki's work, but this first volume of the Defensive Edge is not bad. The concepts are solid and practical. This volumes provides a well organized section on fundamental gripping, movement and knife engagement skills. I will say that some of the offensive and defensive tactics are a little advanced for an introductory text, and caution should be taken when implementing these suggested responses. Overall, as an initial offering of a continuing series this is a decent start.

A good training aid

A good training aid, which is it's intent. Covers many of the fundamentals needed to learn knife work. And thankfully he's honest and realistic in his approach of how serious a knife attack is. It is largely Philipino based (which makes sense if you know Ron's background), but whether or not you like them as a whole Philipino martial arts do have a lot to offer in knife fighting. My background is not in Kali, but I still appreciate what it has to offer. Take what you like, leave what you don't.
