Colin Koenig makes his writing debut with a subject about which he is thoroughly comfortable (and makes even the most naive reader feel the same) – Golf. For a book that steers clear of violence, weaponry, apocalyptic derring-do, fantasy and sci-fi (the de rigueur themes that titillate the public at present), Colin supplies a jet-propelled adventure on a golf course that reads so well that it vies with any mystery or thriller on the shelf.

The theme? A wager between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to play 18 holes of golf with a $100,000 prize going to the winner. But Colin leads us into the plot with some solid preparatory background information: ‘Jack Nicklaus was not insulted by the proclamation put forth by the PGA Tour's new young lion, Tiger Woods. He wasn't even a little miffed. In fact, Jack was impressed by the boldness of the statement----that Woods' primary goal was to win the most major golf tournaments in a career, a record held by Nicklaus with eighteen. Victories in majors were how pro golfers were truly measured. And it stirred the competitive nature in golf's all-time greatest player. Woods had just blown away the field at the 1997 Masters by twelve strokes. It was his first major title. This feat was even more incredible considering that Woods had shot forty on the first nine holes. He needed only thirty strokes to complete the second nine before distancing himself from everyone else over the next three days. This despite being just twenty-one years old....Nicklaus, at age fifty-seven, was a six-time Masters champion. He of course knew he was no longer the player he had been in his twenties, thirties, and even forties. Yet finishing twenty-nine strokes behind Woods seemed too large a disparity. Despite the odds, Jack hoped to someday meet Woods on an even playing field, or golf course to be exact and truly challenge this prodigy----the young man whose stated goal was to surpass Nicklaus as golf's all-time winning majors champion.’

And so Jack makes the wager - “Tiger. Would you be interested in playing one round of golf with me? Just you and me, at Augusta National?” The question was delivered in as quiet a voice as Nicklaus could manage and still be certain Tiger heard him. “Why are we whispering, Jack?” “Because I don't want anyone else to know about it, that's why,” explained Jack, with a nod toward the Woods entourage, and others who might be curious….. “I want you and I to play one round of golf, at Augusta, without cameras.... or caddies, without anyone else involved knowing about it----and for 100,000 dollars! You have 100,000 dollars to lose, don't you, Tiger?”

From that point on – through all 18 holes – Colin Koenig manages to relate all the drama of a full-fledged thriller, and the joy of reading it is that it is a wager not a war and the results are more than satisfying – on both sides. A Private Round of Golf Between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods!

What happens when Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus challenges up-and-coming star Tiger Woods to a private golf match in 1997?

Author Colin Koenig explores this premise in his new book, Major Wager: The Pure Round of Golf Jack Challenged Tiger To.

The two men enter a golf course very early one hot, humid morning in the late nineties. They haven’t told anyone they’re playing this round, not even their families. They are there alone. No cameras, no crowds, no fans. Just two men playing a round of golf. But it turns into so much more.

Nicklaus is wondering if Tiger has what it takes to beat his record of 18 major victories. The kid is good, but young. Tiger is excited to play with such a golf prodigy, and curious himself how the round will go.

With witty dialogue and inside looks into the characters’ thoughts, Koenig brings these two men to life on the page: “Jack would prefer to defeat young Mr. Woods by playing well on is own, instead of relying on Tiger to screw up. Golf was no different than any other sport in this regard: The best defense is a good offense.”

Stripped of their entourage, carrying their own golf clubs, and alone, they are suddenly just two guys playing golf: “Jack and Tiger both decided to sit for a moment on the split-backed wooden bench provided at the tee box. Nicklaus lit a cigarette. Tiger bounced his ball, up and down, up and down, off the clubface of his driver.”

Koenig carries this 18-hole round of golf through the entire book. He answers questions most golf fans would want to know:
What would they talk about?
What goes on inside their heads as they play?
Can two great pros really keep this match a secret?

I enjoyed the premise of this book and the insight into what Koenig believes the characters are thinking as they play. He brings a really human element to two people we’ve all seen only in the public eye. I do think this book could do with a round of editing, to iron out some of the typos that distracted me. I’d also like to see a Forward by the author, explaining how this story idea came to be, and what research on golf he had to do.

Overall, I believe this story would be a great read for fans of golf, and other sports enthusiasts who wonder what would happen if two great men go at it in their chosen field.

A Fantasy Round Between Two Of Golf's Greatest Players

Who is the true champion in any given sport?

It’s a question that gets asked about every one-on-one sport. In boxing, is it Frazier or Ali? In tennis, McEnroe or Connors? In golf, is it the veteran Jack “Golden Bear” Nicklaus or the younger Tiger Woods? Who would win in a pure one-on-one match on any given day?
That’s the question at the heart of Colin Koenig’s thrilling golf novel, “Major Wager: The Pure Round of Golf Jack Challenged Tiger To.” Like the title conveys, it’s a fictional account of one round of golf between the man who has won the most major golf tournaments, and the likely challenger to that record. The stakes are simple. One round of 18 holes of golf between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. And to make it even more interesting, Colin Koenig sets the contest at an unknown golf course for these two great players, without any interference from onlookers. No caddies allowed either. Just Jack and Tiger and a few random squirrels and frogs for all the marbles.

Whether you’re a golf enthusiast, or just a casual fan, this fantasy match plays like a dream and a fantasy come true. Colin Koenig knows the sport of golf well and is a master at describing the layout off each unique and challenging hole, as well as the various shots along the way. When the tension is not on who will play better, it’s on keeping the whole affair secret. With this public golf course closed for the morning, Jack and Tiger make their way through a most unusually challenging course, beset by thick pines, creeks and ponds, sand traps and other course obstacles. As the two men make casual small talk and begin to bond over the three and a half hour game, they also must remain on guard in order to make it through 18 holes without the media finding out about this dream round.

Koenig knows both golfer’s style of play, describing every move they make with the precision, accuracy and skill of a great golfer:

"Woods once again walloped the ball off the tee, his body appearing as a statue-like pretzel following a tornado after the swing. Intensive power derived from precise motion. Another 300-plus yard drive, and straight as an arrow."

Nicklaus and Woods engage is cautious and at times guarded dialogue at the start but slowly bond during the round and the dialogue is pitch perfect:

"Nicklaus again marveled at the resiliency of young Mr. Woods.

“Is there any shot you can’t hit?”

Tiger proudly stuck the four iron back in his golf bag.

“There’s probably a couple,” he conceded. “I just haven’t met them yet."

There is no wasted dialogue and most of it is centered on the game itself. Meanwhile, the reader is left to ponder if these two golf legends can complete the course without anyone discovering the dream match. At one point the two men “break in” to the clubhouse to get some sustenance and, for Woods, a new hat, leaving behind notes of thanks and a few bucks to cover the cost. The ending is as exciting and satisfying as any major championship you’ve ever seen.

It’s a hole-in-one of a book that will leave you pondering other dream match-ups.

Lewis Is On Target Again

I enjoyed Bill Lewis' "Bowhunting" so much I decided to take a look at this one on spearfishing which I have had an on-again-off-again interest in for years. This is just as good and delivers the same level of detail regarding the best ways to start off spearfishing, improve and enjoy the sport. Great book for novices and the more experienced alike. Once again, highly recommended.

An enlightening biography of a truly great man

As a long time fan of this amazing boxer I purchased this book in order to extend my knowledge of him. From the beginning I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s style. Klitschko was presented in a manner that was devoid of subjective frills, going straight to factual information about his personal and professional history. I knew this was a brilliant, giving, and resilient man, but reading this information really illuminated me on just how resolute he really is. From his humble beginnings in the Ukraine and scholastic adroitness all the way to his boxing history, philanthropic efforts and legacy, this is vivid and inspiring biography of an individual that more of us should try to emulate. Now that I’ve finished the book, I can easily attest that I’m even greater a fan that I was prior. If anyone considering this book doesn’t know as much about Mr. Klitschko as they would like, this book will definitely enlighten you: I can definitely say it did for me.

Fun drinks, but could have incorporated more "foraging."

I bought this as a holiday gift for a craft cocktail loving friend.

Why you'll love it:

The book is very straightforward. It offers a variety of recipes that include many different types of foraged ingredients. These include basil, rose, different types of berries, beets, and various herbs. The book itself doesn't get too crafty, gearing the cocktails to a wide audience that isn't limited to cocktail aficionados.

Drinks like the "Gingko Alexander" that includes roasted gingko nuts will surely create conversation at your next cocktail party. The Author, Amy Zavatto, includes narration throughout and shares stories about personal experiences with much of the foraged components. In addition to the gingko drink, a pickled carrot bloody marry and sassafras sidecar look enjoyable.

Why you won't love it:

The book is rather small and akin to a pocket guide. I was hoping for something a little bigger, especially after working through Death & Co. last year. That being said, Forager's Cocktails could have been so much more. Amy Zavatto had much opportunity to go into depth regarding her choices for the ingredients and unfortunately comes up short. Instead of exploring the flavor profiles of the foraged, the author relies on rather boring personal stories regarding her experiences with each ingredient.

Instead of pairing specific types of spirits, the recipes call for generic "vodka" or "gin." As someone who has only recently begun exploring cocktails, I know that spirit choice can define a cocktail. I wish that the author had placed a little more effort in building her recipes.

Conclusion:
A solid effort, but could have been more. The recipes look good and will provide some fun things to work through, yet I only wish there was more of the "foraged" component in the text.

Great For Both Town and Country

Amy Zavatto has written a great book for those who love the outdoors and those who love a good cocktail. Looking for new flavors in botanicals is an exciting, creative pursuit and this book will provide inspiration and fun for those who like to experiment. If you are looking to liven up your cocktail menu, you will find both ideas and instruction. Don't think that you need to be in the wilderness to forage, the book works for city dwellers and is the perfect gift for the family gardener.

Nice way to change up your normal cocktail game.

Great for ideas for the foraging cocktail lover. I particularly like the variety of syrup ideas which opened my eyes beyond my normal ginger/sumac syrup. Adding herbs to each syrup is a fantastic way to add complexity. I personally find books like this to be inspirational rather than something to follow to a T, but I'm sure if you follow them they would end up great as well.

A must have for traditional Ju Jitsu historians!

This book is a reprinting of the original text from 1952. For me personally it is extremely valuable and I'm grateful that it is available. This is the only known English book about Yamato Ryu Jujitsu. It was originally titled "The Secret Teachings of Self-Defense, Jujitsu of the Yamato School" I recommend it to all historians of the art and would say that it is a must have for anyone who wants to obtain a picture in time of that era.

My Sensei, Joseph C. Mandese was a student of a U.S. Navy Veteran who, I only know as Sensei Steve, he was a Nidan, but married to a daughter of the Soke of the system and she was a Yondan. The Soke had instructed Sensei Steve and others to spread the system as nearly all male heirs had been killed in World War II. Sensei Steve opened a 2nd Floor Dojo in the Morris Park Avenue area of the Bronx. The Dojo was open for only 5 years which resulted in two Shodan graduates, my Sensei and a classmate. The classmate married Sensei Steve's sister and went Sensei Steve, his wife and the classmate and his wife all went back to Japan when the Soke recalled all members of the family back. The year was 1955, I met my Sensei in 1989 and he mentioned this book and searched tirelessly to find a copy with only the cover and internal pages ripped out. After he passed away in 2003, It took me 8 years, but I found a PDF copy, which is in its' entirety. I'm sorry he isn't around to see it, but I hope this will be a beneficial source to anyone interested.

I give it 5 stars for context, and a good well thought attempt to preserve history. I am definitely biased, but I still beleive that it is a worthwhile purchase.

This is the real thing

I have a nidan (second degree black belt) in daito ryu aiki bujitsu from the honbudojo (mainline dojo in japan). I found this book very interesting. The techniques contained within are authentic Daito Ryu the order is different and probably reflects an earlier less formalized order of instruction. A great resource for anyone studying daito ryu. If what you are doing doesn't work or doesn't resemble the techniques in this book it probably isn't the real thing.

good stuff need more.

seems to be a realistic set of kata for daito ryu and some of them kempo conatined now in yagyu shingan ryu? very strange how the art was passed around especially after the last of the great masters passing away earlier this last millennium but looking deeper at the book it seems maybe the authors name has a been sightly changed maybe is this saito or sato?? either way the jutsu with in is solid can be found on other plases but is a worthy book and a worthy purchase with hopes they wont stop with juts this on text.
