Doron Petersan opened Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats in 2002, drawing on her degree in dietetics from the University of Maryland and years of experience working in restaurants. She lives with her husband, Peter, their son, and their rescued companion animals in Washington, D.C.

Whenever we stop in DC we certainly help Sticky Fingers meet their financial goal for the day...walking out of the bake shop with so many items people have the right to stare (and the family nearly bursts into tears/has a tantrum if the Little Devils aren't available). Naturally, we pre-ordered this book as soon as it was announced.

Since its arrival, my wife and I have made four recipes and only one could we mark "delish." The classic vanilla cake was ok. The kiwi curd found its way directly to the compost pile. The creamy vanilla filling for the little devils is "delish," but the little devils themselves are nothing to talk about (over a year ago, using the ingredients list from a little devils' wrapper, I created my own and utterly fantastic version).

We can't help but wonder if this book is loaded with typos when it comes to quantities and dimensions. The little devils recipe calls for a 17x11 baking pan. The batter in no way comes close to needing that much room and as a result, you get a cookie-thin cake (yes, we followed the vinegar instructions). The kick in the pants...we could see what was going to happen, but we figured the winner of Cupcake Wars would know what she was talking about. Call us George W..."fool me once, shame on -- shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again." Yeah, that dumb.

Now, before you brush off our comments (we noticed a lot of the 5-stars were just going on about having the book, not necessarily making anything), we do bake, all the time. Unfortunately, thanks to Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, we are chubby vegans. We have NEVER had one of Colleen's recipe's go wrong, whether they come from The Joy of Vegan Baking or The Vegan Table. We've also had great success veganizing traditional recipes to the point where we are requested to make certain items (by NONvegans).

We will likely give this book a couple more tries (someone noted the Boston Creme cake was good. My wife grew up in MA and has great memories of good old Boston Cream Pies.). If these next recipes are a fail, this book will be out and we'll stick exclusively to Colleen's works (actually, we'll hide them until we've dropped a few pounds!).

Absolutely fantastic (with a caveat)

First of all, Doron is fantastic. She's sassy, creative, and ridiculously passionate about food chemistry stuff. I've taken two baking classes with her (and under her direction, I've made Brown Sugar cupcakes, Smores brownies, Strawberry Margarita cupcakes, and Mexican Chocolate cupcakes), so it was natural for me to purchase this book.

The first section is all about baking, chemistry, how various elements of baking work, and, most importantly, how vegan baking works. Understanding these principles means you'll have more confidence in the future if you want to try and convert other recipes into something vegan.

So far, I've made a handful of the recipes in the book.

First - they are always delicious.
Second - they aren't foolproof (while the champagne cupcake with passion fruit frosting was mindblowingly delicious, the cake came out a strange consistency that I wouldn't share with friends). I followed the directions to a T and I've had other vegan baking successes, so it was a tad disappointing.
Third - this book is gold for anyone who loves sweets...you do NOT have to be vegan to enjoy these treats.

My other warning is that in both of the classes I took with Doron, she talked about recipe creation mistakes - servings being 10 times what they were supposed to, etc. Hearing these things makes me a little nervous about how comprehensive their recipe testing is at Sticky Fingers. It's always delicious, and I adore them more than words can say. However, I suspect the issue with the champagne cupcakes had more to do with the measurements included than my technique.

So...my advice is BUY THIS BOOK. COOK FROM THIS BOOK. DEVOUR EVERYTHING YOU MAKE FROM THIS BOOK. Just don't be surprised if one or two of the recipes yields something unexpected.

Brilliant!

I was so excited to get Doron's book! I pre-ordered it WAY back. Then I saw her article in Vegetarian Times and was delighted to get the chance to preview some of her recipes. The book is pretty amazing. I love how Doron is very specific in her directions - very specific! I tried the Boston Creme cupcakes and they were to die for. I seriously can't wait to try more - especially the whoopie pies! I love how she shares the recipes from her winning cupcakes from Cupcake Wars as well as the recipes that made her bakery famous, including some tasty looking sticky buns. I would have liked to have seen some more pictures, especially for the cake frosting directions, as they were a little complicated. I also was disappointed to see coffee in almost (not all) every recipe that involved chocolate cake. I am not a coffee drinker and hate the thought of adding extra caffeine to sweets; I wish there was an alternative to that besides decaf. Other than that, I am very pleased and cannot wait to try more recipes! I would LOVE to see a sequel ;)

I really enjoyed this book. It gave me a great experience about underdogs making great things happen in their life. I chose to give it five stars because I love the NBA and some NBA books just list boring facts about what happens in the past but this book tells a amazing story about what the amazing basketball player Stephen Curry's life was about and he is still in the NBA so it is technically not talking about the past. I recommend this book to anybody especially to young ones who are starting to read and describe some of the parts to them so maybe in one part of their life when they feel like their an underdog they can say "Hey" maybe I will turn my life upside down and be the unstoppable like Stephen Curry did.

It was pretty good.But it was so short!!! I thought it would take me at least 30-40 minutes to read but it took me like 5!!! But it was still good.

Simply good book to have...

This is a very pretty book with many full pages of color photos of the food although the cooked results at home do not always match the images exactly. What really counts is flavor, after all, and these surprisingly easy to prepare dishes are packed with flavor.
The Chicken Wings in Vietnamese Caramel sauce were delicious but not nearly as red as those pictured in the book, nor as charred looking. (Perhaps those were finished on a grill?)
The book is great for cooks across the board; new to the kitchen: dive in and cook what has the least ingredients and feel like a pro.
A pro already? Few of the recipes are challenging but they are an inspiration to look at certain foods in a different way.Lentils with tamarind sauce is a good example.
Another nice feature to this book is that a few classic cocktail recipes are included which helps to round out a menu if you want to make an entire meal for the purpose of home entertaining. It also suggests alternative meats and various substitutions throughout in case you are a timid first time cook or a lazy pro; one stop shopping for all. Well worth the price.

Learn To Beat The Bland

There are a handful of good sources for spices. Penzeys spices for example is a great source. The problem is you have to know HOW to use them to get the most benefit from having them. Honestly, if you didn’t grow up with spices and cooking with spices the experience can be difficult if not traumatic. Which is why books such as this one by, Amber Powell, are the perfect addition to any gift of spices you might give as a gift. Also, if you are someone looking for a book on spices, this is a great book to start you journey into flavor.

Gray Ghosts and Red Rangers offers a colorful account of this vanishing American folkway—back-country fox hunting known as "hilltopping," "moonlighting," "fox racing," or "one-gallus fox hunting." Practiced neither for blood sport nor to put food on the table, hilltopping was worlds removed from elite fox hunting where red- and black-coated horsemen thundered across green fields in daylight. Hilltopping was a nocturnal, even mystical pursuit, uniting men across social and racial lines as they gathered to listen to dogs chasing foxes over miles of ground until the sun rose. Engaged in by thousands of rural and small-town Americans from the 1860s to the 1980s, hilltopping encouraged a quasi-spiritual identification of man with animal that bound its devotees into a "brotherhood of blood and cause" and made them seem almost crazy to outsiders.

About the Author
Thad Sitton is a historian of anthropological background and training, specializing in studies of rural Texas during the first half of the twentieth century. Three of Sitton’s books won the coveted T. R. Fehrenbach Award of the Texas Historical Commission, and his history of freedmen’s settlements received a major prize from the Texas Institute of Letters.

Great insights into the early American South and valuable perspectives on the early days of conservation in America

Thad Sitton has written a beautiful piece on an almost forgotten chapter in our nation's history. Fox hunting as it was practiced in US, mostly in the South, was adaptation of a popular European pursuit. It was largely a response the land forms, flora and fauna of the US and diverged from European traditions in numerous ways, including the development of an almost cult-like worship of the fox and obsession with breeding the perfect American foxhound. Interestingly, fox hunting as it evolved in the US, may have contributed to conservation being one of the core values of the modern American sportsman as foxhunters quickly learned that habitat destruction and alteration greatly affected their sport.

I recommend this work to anyone interested in the history of the American South, historic American lifeways, and the history of conservation, wildlife management and hunting in the US.

Around our family table, of course! From an early age, the festive food is very important for our Christmas spirit. Grandma's mince pie, mom's roasted turkey, dad's eggnog, aunt's plum pudding and so on, we all remember those flavors, aromas, and smells!

Could Have Been a Contender for Best Cookbook of the Christmas Season.. Useful, Enticing Recipes, Needs Improvement Though

This book is targeted to .homemakers and others who want to dazzle friends, neighbors and loved ones with great food for the Christmas Season.

What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 3,131.

Questions that might come to mind are: There are some terrific recipes once readers get passed the irritating advertisement opening.

Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?.Yes.

Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? No. I detected none.

Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? Neither. This is a cookbook.

What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Plain English.

My biggest pleasure or disappointment was? Despite its usefulness, I do have to note some objections.

1 – The initial opening to an invite to download – ie, an advertisement.
2 – Although I initially was elated to learn a PDF version of the entire book was available in PDF, it turned out you need to open this in certain preferred PDF formats (not Adobe Acrobat Reader) that amounts to, in my opinion, a possible loss of privacy to the reader.
3 – Recipe layout looks okay, except there is an annoying number (1) at the left of each line in the ingredients; there are no calories or nutrition statements. In other words, the health values needed by people (including those afflicted with Type 2 Diabetes, such as myself) are not shown.

I had intended to include a copy of one recipe within this review, but, since the presentation would not stay true to the format viewed within the book, I chose to not include an exceprt.

Bottom Line:

Despite the shortcomings and annoyances discussed above, I am rating this cookbook as a four star. Note that the opening to a download advertisement only occurs when I initially opened the book, or when I started reading the recipes immediately after the table of contents, so it isn’t something that occurs each time you open the book. Also, the link to the PDF download is provided at the back of the book.

I'll use it quite a bit this month!

A clickable TOC to find what recipe you want and pictures included (Granted, the pictures are in a separate file but at least they still exist) in a kindle cookbook? Yes. Yes, yes, yes.
The cookbook is pretty straightforward- Recipe, instructions, advice, and then onto the next recipe! These are defiantly seasonal delights (although I’d welcome them at my table any day of the year) and the author took the time to make a gluten-free section. My little one can’t have gluten so I’m happy to have some ideas for seasonal selections that he can eat too (and not just a few- there are quite a bit). I’ll be pinning this to my Kindle board to use quite a bit this month!

This recipe book has many different recipes that are perfect for the Christmas season. With recipes that cater to a variety of different diets such as vegan, low carb, and paleo. This book offers recipes with multiple courses such as soup, salad, appetizers, and meals. The author also gives some delicious recipes for desserts. One of the things that I like the best about Jamie Stewart's cookbooks is that health is always a priority in the recipes, so you can rest easy that you are creating nutritious meals with your family. The recipes are also very creative so you and your family never have to bored with the same old thing.
