I recommend this book to everyone - bikers, poets, couples and travelers. I embarked on my journey with Tony and Claire expecting a high quality story and got more. I enjoyed the story from two perspectives, with plenty of poetry rounding out the adventures on a tandem bicycle. I love Yorkshire - one of my favorite destinations, and plan to visit some of the sites highlighted. Well crafted, thoroughly satisfying.

If you are looking for information on camping or wilderness survival look elsewhere. This book is complete garbage. Let me outline for you how the chapters of this baloney book go:
1) Navigation: It's important to know how to navigate. There's not enough time for us to tell you how though.
2) Making Shelter: It's import to know how to make shelter. There's not enough time for us to tell you how though.
3) Water Supply: Water is important. Good luck figuring out how to find clean water.
4) Campfires: There are several ways to start a fire. Good luck learning how to make a fire drill by yourself.

Do not waste your time. If you rely on this book, you will die...alone....in the wilderness....because this garbage isn't going to help you one bit.

The first fear that I had in my mind was about creepy looking insects..!!

It's my first time camping in the wilderness with friends and I am totally not at ease. Part of me is really excited about the fun and adventure and part of me is very anxious about facing unknown situations. So I was hoping to learn some survival techniques.

The first fear that I had in my mind was about creepy looking insects. Tips and tricks to ward off the insects and recognizing the poisonous plants was the first chapter that I have read and they seem pretty good. I also found the tips regarding navigation, purification of water,obtaining food and building shelter useful.

Appalled to strong a word?

Wow. I read through the first 5 chapters last night and was laughing and disgusted at the same time. The writing in this book is at best a high school level outline of a book idea at best. First aid advice is to have aspirin and a sewing kit incase you need to stitch someone up? Lots of berries abound if you need them to survive, but don't eat red or white ones? And the best, " core out a piece of tree root, fashion it into a bowl and then use it (a wood bowl?) to boil water for survival. I was amazed. Seems like the author looked a pictures in an old Ranger Rick magazine and tried to describe them. Really sad and obviously no effort.

Lamp Soup with Sour Cream

1/3 cup canola oil
10 oz. boneless lamb shoulder, trimmed and cut into ½” pieces
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 bay leaves
1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
2 tbsp. Hungarian hot paprika
4 oz. russet potato, peeled and cut into ½” pieces
4 oz. yellow snap or green beans, cut into 1” pieces
¾ cup sour cream, plus more for garnish
2 tbsp. flour
1 tbsp. coarsely chopped dill

*Serves 4-6

1. Heat oil in a 6-qt. saucepan over medium-high heat. Season lamb with salt and pepper; cook; stirring occasionally, until browned, about 8 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer lamb to a bowl and set aside. Add garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, and pepper to pan; cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic and onion are soft, about 15 minutes. Add reserved lamb, the paprika, and 4 cups water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until lamb is slightly tender, about 20 minutes. Stir in potatoes and beans; cook until lamb and vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes more.

2. Whisk sour cream and flour in a bowl until smooth; stir mixture into soup, and cook until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with a swirl of sour cream and a sprinkling of dill.

Mmmm Chocolate

I was told this is one of the only books to show you how to easily make your own chocolate from raw ingredients. I didn't really believe it, but on having a look online, it's true, there is very little information on actually making your own chocolate. There's plenty of books and websites on how to melt chocolate to make new shapes but that's not this book's main selling point.

The book starts out with info on chocolate, then has the main recipes on how to make dark, milk and white chocolate basics.

I volunteered and got involved with a facebook group to test out the recipes. I am normally someone who avoids spending too much time in the kitchen, but I soon got addicted. The ver first time I tried following the first recipe I didn't have a clue and didn't have half the proper tools for the job. I had no idea whether I was doing things correctly as I didn't know how the ingredients would react. Then I had to do it again and again and again as I wanted to get better. My colleagues like my new hobby as there I make far too much chocolate for me to eat. They always asked what liqueur I used, but it's just honey.

There are also recipes for the insides. My particular favourites are peppermint creams and the clotted cream mousse. Sometimes I'll make my own chocolate for the outside and sometimes I'll melt a cooking chocolate to make things easier. None of the recipes have loads of ingredients. They are really simple. I do advise on reading the recipe thoroughly beforehand, especially whether to use teaspoons or tablespoons. One recipe said up to 6 teaspoons of honey. I used 4 tablespoons!!!

There is a lot more info and help in the book such as troubleshooting, alternatives to recipes, what ingredients and moulds to use.

As a whole book, this one seems to cover everything you need to know about making chocolate (and a note on how to best enjoy chocolate) Be warned, it's addictive. I am awaiting more moulds so I can make even more chocolates.

I read this cover to cover before publication as I am one of a select band of recipe testers. I began tentatively, not sure if what I was being asked to do would produce anything I fancied eating. All I can say is – go with it. The business of spreading the ingredients, vigorous mixing and re-melting sounds like a faff but it’s quicker and less messy than making scones. At least, the way I make scones! Once you have perfected the technique you will never look back. You’ll start to think of your own variations and you will suddenly find you have an amazing number of friends who want to help you sample them and decide on the best!

If you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, if you just love eating wonderful chocolate in flavours you can’t buy, then you’ll love this book. I bought a few silicone moulds which each cost much less than a box of chocolates and now I’m addicted to making as well as eating the delicious stuff. The author has put a lot of time into trying out techniques and recipes and has put in all the ground work so that we can fly. The photographs are spectacular. This is a great book. I’m buying the paperback too, as soon as it’s available, because the photos are just too gorgeous and too colourful to hide away on a kindle.

About the Author
I was born in 1957 in Houston, Texas. I had a long career in the oilfields of South Texas, before going back to earn a business degree from Texas A&M University. Though I started as Class of '80, I finished as Class of '91. One of my favorite T-shirts says, "College, the 12 best years of my life!" and I mean it. Once I started back, I found it difficult to stop, earning an MS from A&M and a Ph. D. from the University of Colorado. I have served on the faculty of UTSA, Idaho State University, and the University of St. Thomas, in Houston. I have worked with a variety of marketing research firms to measure, analyze, and develop customer/brand relationships. I founded Storyed Solutions to provide marketing and management research solutions to industry and higher education. I have been married for over 30 years, to the same wife, and have three lovely daughters. I learned to surf, at 49, when we decided to move back to Texas, from Idaho. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. In Old Guy Surfing I share my learning experiences, along with strategies and techniques to keep old guys surfing into old age. I enjoy writing and have several book projects in process. Most of my work is based on research, or the application of business models to everyday life. Look for more books in the near future.

Farro Salad with Fava Beans & Radicchio

1 cup farro
2 cups shelled and peeled fava beans (about 2lb. unshelled beans)
¼ cup extra-virgin oil
3 tbsp. red wine vinegar
1 shallot, finely chopped
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, top taste
½ cup shaved Pecorino Romano, plus more to garnish
½ head radicchio, thinly sliced

*Serves 4.

1. Combine farro and 5 cups water in a 4-qt. saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until farro is tender, 45 minutes. Add fava beans and cook for 3 minutes; drain, then run them under cold water until cool.

2. Meanwhile, whisk oil, vinegar, shallot, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until combined. Add farro and fava beans, Pecorino, and radicchio and toss to combine. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with more Pecorino.

What a pleasure. My husband gave me this for Christmas, ha ha.....and the recipes are authentic. If you're looking to cut out fat or watch calories this isn't the book for you. The blending of ingredients is perfecto!

Highly recommend!

I really love this one. I have a slow cooker that I've used, say... 2 times so far? As far as I can tell, this recipe book is well written and easy to understand. I recommend you download it on your tablet while you start cooking (I've used it on my laptop, a bit annoying since the some the free space on the counter was used by it). A small remark would be regarding the use of photos maybe and / or calorie count. Other than that, it's a must have for a beginner slow cooker!

The Ricotta Lasagna is delicious!

My partner and I just bought a slow cooker to save some time in the preparation of food each night. This book is exactly what we were looking for. There are lots of slow cooker recipe books out there, but this one is by far the most reliable. It has some really simple but delicious meals that we have enjoyed multiple times. I particularly enjoy the Ricotta Lasagna.. Yum!!

Great Book for Kitchen Lovers

I Love this book! Though i can't really cook by this book, it helps me to learna nd prepare recipes in convinient way. It has different chicken, vegetables and beef recipes which i love to eat. My favorite is Maple Baked Beans which i just tried out because of this book. Will really recommend this book to others specially to those who are into cooking.
