Donna Schwenk is the author of Cultured Food for Life and the founder of www.culturedfoodlife.com. Very Informative

Dummies Guide to Survival is a very informative book. I'm really impressed by how much Alex Pitt knows about the subject of survival. Throughout the book there are so many great tips that I would definitely use if I was ever stuck in the wilderness. I also love the format of the book and how easy he makes it to understand. If a second part was ever published I would definitely be interested in it, but this one alone covers so much information that there almost doesn't have to be any more.

Good intro to the essentials

I lived in Maine for a few years, so it goes without saying that I have experienced my fair share of both camping and hiking trips. That being said, I still find it very important to always brush up on the essentials that, in my opinion, EVERY hiker and camper should be competent of – regardless of where they’re going or what kind of person they are. So, I did go into this book with plenty of prior survival knowledge with the intention of merely having a refresher, but was quite surprised to find that I learned a few tricks (the sections about the beehives and using ice to magnify was especially new info for me)

In summary, it’s a pretty good intro for a beginners, but you should always continue expanding your knowledge (the author even states this). I do think that the book should be longer and some of the more essential survival tactics should be elaborated upon further. Maybe include environment-specific examples?

Very Cool Tips to Survival

I love hiking and camping, but I wouldn't say that I have ever been an expert at survival. I got this book to help me be more prepared when I'm out in the wild, especially after seeing the movie, The Edge.

Alex Pitt covers everything from making a fire, creating rescue signals, forging for food, finding a water source, and even getting your bearings without a compass. One of my favorite tips in the book was building a fire from a lense of ice. I have seen it done in the movies, but I never knew that it really worked. Another handy tip was knowing that ants usually build their mounds on the south side of a tree, so you will know where south is and be able to navigate better.

This really is a Dummies Guide to Survival and I feel better equipped to tackle the wild on my next trip.

Basic living, or 'roughing it' read

I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of the Northwest. While my peers wanted to 'go cruising' or sneak cigarettes and experiment with alcohol and loud music, I always had the wanderlust desire to see what was on the other side of 'the mountain' or lake, or... So I started reading about the American pioneers and mountain men, American Indians...then about Eskimos and Pacific Islanders...and got into fishing, hunting, backpacking, horse packing, and camping out. I discovered that reading about how someone else had already figured out how to do something saved me a lot of effort (or cuts, burns, bruises...) in accomplishing what I was trying to do roughing it "out". This book is a,good read along those lines.

Excellent read... the gear may have changed but the goals and philosophy has not

For a free book on the Kindle the value is astronomical.

The people saying this book is dated are right, you're not going to be wearing moccasins. Waterproof boots are less of a gimmick with the advent of goretex In fact the outdoors-man has an astounding number of gear options since the author's lifetime 1873-1946. This book isn't going to tell you what kind of treaking poles you should use, or the technological wonder that is a spandex polyester blend long underwear. Its also not going to tell you how to build a campfire or tie a knot, or a number of other things that a man was just expected to know in the early 1900's.

What you are going to get by reading this book is how the author approached his gear philosophically and practically. You'll learn what he used and more importantly why he used it... you'll also understand how his gear and approach changed after more hours outdoors then most modern folks will ever see. I think by reading this book you'll understand how the author would choose his gear in modern times. You'll come to understand that the needs of a human being haven't changed that much, nor has the debate on how to fulfill them.

What I found most valuable: an easy to follow method on deciding what is necessary and what is unnecessary gear. How to avoid dangers of being over-encumbered, while still avoiding the dangers of being under equipped is the key to enjoying the outdoors. It was also refreshing to see that gear selection was situation dependent (some modern folks seem to be stuck on having a one size fits all solution to their outdoors kit)

The writing style is old but to the point. Anyone looking to more traditional methods would enjoy this read. However, in today's world a lot is outdated for modern uses.

Among those regal personages: Russia?s Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine the Great, France?s Marie Antoinette, and Great Britain?s Duchess of Devonshire. In the New World, Thomas Jefferson?s matched pair of Queen Anne?style flintlock pistols were made by London gunmaker Mary Dealtry. Pioneer American women took bold steps to defend home and hearth, and their courage earned them the right to vote in Western states, where hardiness and self-reliance were taken for granted. As Jefferson himself admonished: ?[The gun gives] boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind.? Many women were comfortable with firearms in early America, and among the world?s most famous women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was Annie Oakley??Little Sure Shot.?

Turning back the clock to the time of Joan of Arc, R. L. Wilson shows how women have played a vital role in armed conflicts. For many centuries, women went to war?sometimes in the guise of men?without their comrades knowing that they were present. The 2001?2002 war in Afghanistan saw Northern Alliance women trained to fire AK-47s, some even shooting their Taliban tormentors.

Expanding on a long tradition, in the post?World War II period, millions of women and girls gravitated to sport shooting, including trap, skeet, and sporting clays, rifle and pistol target competitions, and the harvesting of game birds and even the dangerous big game of Africa. As evidenced in the writings of Ernest Hemingway, Robert Ruark, and Isak Dinesen, big game hunting in Africa was a favorite pursuit of many society women from Europe and the United States.

Following the publication of this book, the Rosenbruch Wildlife Heritage Museum will mount a traveling exhibition exploring the theme of women and firearms. About the Author
R. L. Wilson has authored more than forty books and more than three hundred articles in a career that has spanned four decades. His dedication to the world of arms and armor began with a boyhood in Minnesota, followed by internships at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Armouries, H.M. Tower of London, and the Wadsworth Atheneum, where he was appointed curator of firearms at the age of twenty-three.

He resides in San Francisco, but consultancies with private collectors and institutions, including the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Cody Firearms Museum, the Royal Armouries Museum (Leeds), Tiffany & Co., the National Firearms Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, keep him traveling continually.

Retrospectives of Peter Beard’s photography and art have been held in Milan, Paris, Berlin, New York, and Los Angeles. His work has appeared in Vogue, Life, Esquire, Vanity Fair, and numerous other journals. Guns, Women, History - great read and photos

As I listened for over 1 hour on the G. Gordon Liddy show and read reviewed in the NY Post, this is THE book on the history of arms and women. The photos are astounding (some by Peter Beard), the captions very interesting (not repeats of the text!) and, over all, one can really understand women's fascination in the use of firearms, from defence, to shooting, especially sport shooting and an Olympic Champion (as well as a good piece on Annie Oakley).

Originally privately printed in 1902, this was Beatrix Potter's favourite of her 23 little Tales. Printed by Frederick Warne a year later, 2003 now sees the celebration of 100 years of The Tailor of Gloucester.

In the time of swords and periwigs and full-skirted coats with flowered lappets - when gentlemen wore ruffles, and gold-laced waistcoats of paduasoy and taffeta - there lived a tailor in Gloucester. He sat in the window of a little shop in Westgate Street, cross-legged on a table, from morning till dark.

A classic for slightly older children

This is my favorite of the Beatrix Potter books, and I probably read all of them as a child. It's ideal for a slightly older child. A very sweet story of a tailor, his cat, and a group of mice who save his business when he is too ill to work.

A clean house and a dirty toad

The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse is yet another example of Beatrix Potter's brilliance in creating a fun and entertaining story for children with the use of animals.

Mrs. Tittlemouse is a very tidy mouse who loathes guests that are dirty and drop by unannounced. The later happens quite often due to the many sandy passages leading to her house that attract bugs. Mrs. Tittlemouse spends the first half of the story shuing out unwelcome guests, and then in the second half her most dreaded surprise guest shows up: Mr. Jackson, a pesky honey loving frog that never wipes his feet. A long day follows. After Mrs. Tittlemouse's frustrating day, she begins cleaning for a fortnight. Mr. Jackson does end up coming by again. He is given the honey that he desires, but not granted access to the house.

I believe this tale teaches children the importance of being neat, especially in somebody else's home. Also, the fact that Mr. Jackson was given honey in the end adds a nice touch to the tale. It doesn't push revenge, and gently preaches kindness for even the most disagreeable of house guests.

My kids enjoy this story

My kids really enjoy any story from Beatrix Potter, which is fine by me because I loved her stories as a child. Sure this version of the story for Kindle is not illustrated, so I read the story to my kids at bed time and told them to close their eyes and use their imagination. There is another version of the story for Kindle that you can get for around $6, but the free version works just fine. I am a Christian mommy who is very picky at what I let my kids read/hear/watch and this is a very appropriate book for our standards.
(By the way, my little ones are 4 yrs, and 2 yrs in case you were curious what age group I was reading to)
