Not such a lowly taco any more

Tacos are one of my favorite Mexican dishes, so when I saw this recipe book I simply had to get it. So far I've tried California Taco Dip, Dismount Taco Dip and the Healthier Seven Layer Taco. Denny Levin, the author also has a book on Burritos, my second favorite Mexican food. Good, tasty and unique recipes.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Coffee (But Were Afraid to Ask)

In one of the early episodes of the cult TV show Twin Peaks (1990) FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLaclan) is asked how he takes his coffee. "Black as midnight on a moonless night," he answers. For years, ever since one night back in 1977 when I was working the graveyard shift in the U.S. Air Force in Panama, that is how I have taken my coffee because there was no cream or sugar available. Since that time, I have come to appreciate the full-bodied taste and aroma of a good cup of black coffee, and like Eliott's Prufrock, my life has been measured out in coffee spoons, for better or worse. However, after reading Steven Ward's brilliant book on coffee, The Coffeeist Manifesto: No More Bad Coffee! my coffee drinking needs a serious overhaul.

In what could best be described as a manual on coffee making, Ward sets out to deliver a practical guide to making that damn fine cup of coffee (to quote another Dale Cooperism). And he does just that. His advice and suggestions, as well as his step-by-step guide, from roasting your own beans or buying the right coffee maker are both insightful as well as practical. Along the way his tongue-in-cheek prose makes for a very interesting read. Describing a coffee house in Seoul that advertised discounted premium robusta coffee he writes: "Anyone that puts `premium' and `robusta' in the same sentence doesn't deserve to be in the coffee business." Or when waxing philosophical about the efforts that go into bringing coffee to our mugs, he says, "Thinking about all that, isn't it kind of a waste to just mindlessly chug your 32-ounce ice coffee diluted with milk, chocolate syrup and whipped cream?"

The book is filled with such witticisms, but in the end what Ward ultimately achieves is providing readers with valuable and practical information on making that damn fine cup of coffee. One thing is for certain, after reading this book you will never look at or taste coffee the same way again.

A great read for coffee enthusiasts

I thought I knew a lot about coffee, but I definitely learned a few things after reading this book. The Coffeeist Manifesto is a good, detailed guide for coffee lovers and would-be enthusiasts. The book has everything from the basics of coffee, different brew types and a lot of coffee 'tips and tricks'. It even tells you how to make the most of visiting a coffee shop. The book also includes some interesting reading about the politics behind coffee.

The book is well written, and is sprinkled with humour the occasional Star Wars reference. I think this is a definite "must read" for anyone interested in learning more about coffee and making the transition from coffee drinker to 'aficionado'.

Good collection of caffeinated insights and advice

I'm interested in all things coffee-related, so as soon as I saw the stunning design of the book cover and the call for "No more bad coffee!" I know the book must become mine!

The author does a great job of sharing a brief history of coffee and it's popularity without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. Once he really gets into the areas of choosing the right beans and the ideal way to prepare this dark brew, his passion really shines. They did a phenomenal job of identifying all the common (and a few not-so) common ways to brew coffee, even covering the Espressi Mypressi Twist Espresso Maker - Espressi MT0901R and the Aerobie AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker (which I personally own and favor, despite most folks not even knowing it exists!)

The paperback retails for just under $12 which seems about right to me for a physical book of this content and area of interest. I managed to get the Kindle version on one of the "free" days, but I would have happily paid $5 or $6 for the e-content.

About the Author
Sujet Saenkham of Sydney's critically acclaimed Spice I Am restaurant stable, was born in a remote village in Central Thailand, where he learnt to cook treasured family recipes at his mother's and grandparents' sides. In 2004 he opened the doors of Spice I Am in Sydney's Surry Hills. This simple hole-in-the-wall space was immediately adopted as the Thai restaurant of choice for the city's food media, and since then the restaurant empire has expanded to include a more sophisticated restaurant in Darlinghurst, an offshoot in Balmain, House: North-East Thai Food, which specialises in Issan dishes from the north of Thailand, and most recently, in 2014, Surry Hills Eating House, showcasing the regional cuisine of southern Thailand. This is Sujet's first cookbook.

Great addition to my Thai cookbook collection!

I love this cookbook! In my opinion, stories, great photos, and recipes with thorough and easy to understand instructions are all marks of a great cookbook. This book meets all of those standards. Also, it has a bunch of recipes for dishes that I've never read about (despite having about 15 other Thai cookbooks) so that makes it especially unique.

Word of advice: be prepared to convert milliliters to cups!

What's here is okay, but keep in mind, there are only 14 recipes in this book. The book is so think that when I opened the envelope from Amazon, my first thought was that they'd forgotten to include the book. Given the overwhelmingly positive reviews posted here, I expected more.

About the Author
Erica Crell is currently an assistant coach for Widener University. She is a goalkeeping coach for a local club team. She is also USFHA Level II Certified.

Crell served for three years as an assistant coach and goalkeeping specialist for the University of Delaware. She played a big role in Delaware's amazing turnaround in 2009 where the team captured the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Throughout her professional career, Crell has spent time working with area field hockey teams. Prior to Delaware, Crell was a goalkeeping consultant at Lebanon Valley College where she helped lead the team to the 2004 Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. Her first college coaching position was as an assistant coach specializing in goalkeeping for Princeton University. She helped the team win the Ivy League Division and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Crell has also served as the head goalkeeping coach with the United States Field Hockey Association Future's Program in New Jersey for eight years and later served as an assistant coach or head coach for the program in Pennsylvania and Delaware.

My goalie granddaughter loved it! It helped her to anticipate play development as the game approached her at the goal she was defending. It also reinforced enthusiasm for reading in general by demonstrating the POWER of reading. Illustrative photos and diagrams were also excellent!

Buy GSP's book The Way of the Fight, instead (this one is too short)

This book provides some good, basic information on GSP.

If you can get it for free, then go for it. I do not recommend buying it, though.

It's very short. I read it on my laptop Kindle app, and on that app it only showed up as 20 pages of actual content (excluding table of contents, etc.)

Another Great Vegan Book in the series

The price of the book is worth it's weight in meatballs (wheatballs -as the recipe is named)! Since we tend to buy these by the bags (at around $5 to 7 per bag) this book has already payed for itself in those alone. Not only that, but there are 5 different versions of the wheatballs (Italian, Asian, Moroccan, Indian and Mexican).

This book is another in the "The Great Vegan..." series, and since it is another one from Tamasin, it's another winner! The ladies cover all types of grains in this book: spelt, einkorn, barley, polenta, wheat, bulgur, amaranth, buckwheat, freekeh, etc.

The chapters are broken into breakfasts, mains, sides and soups and salads. As typical for Fair Winds Press, the book is printed on high-quality paper with top-notch, full-colored photography. Take a look at the index to see what all the tempting recipes are that are covered in the book.

What an awesome book, another winner from Steen and Noyes! Wealth of information, really helps me take advantage of the bulk section of my grocery store, helping me save $$ buying bulk grains and use interesting,healthy ingredients. I had never used spelt berries in my life until I made the Spelt Chili from this book--SO DELICIOUS! And the serving suggestion to top it with guac was awesome, rather than buying vegan sour cream, more natural and super delish! Great book, excellent cooking tips and grain charts, looking forward to cooking many more winning meals from it
