One Of The Truly Great Books On The NFL

I've been in love with the NFL since the years that the Detroit Lions ruled the world. In other words, for a very long time. And for sheer entertainment value, The National Forgotten League has got to be right up there on the short list of absolute must-reads about the game as it was before big TV money and saturation marketing took over.

You'll read about the often-sloshed crowds that would occasionally stagger onto the field during the Prohibition years. There are tales of how the Giants would schedule games against prison teams, a practice repeated by the Chicago Bears as late as 1950. We find out how the Hall of Fame QB Dutch Clark didn't show up for the 1932 championship game, because he felt obliged to honor his contract to coach his Colorado College basketball team, whose first practice session was two days before Clark's Portsmouth Spartans met the Chicago Bears for all the marbles---on an 80 yard field laid down in the same Chicago Stadium where Michael Jordan later led the Chicago Bulls to their first three NBA championships.

You'll learn about how the teams that played for NFL championships would often schedule exhibition rematches just weeks later, anything to grab a buck, and how first the Eagles and Steelers and then the Steelers and Cardinals combined their teams during World War II because of the drain of the military draft on NFL rosters. You'll discover the story of Bill Belichick's father Steve, who in a matter of months worked his way up from the Lions' equipment manager to being their leading punt returner. These stories are but the tip of the iceberg, taking the league from the Decatur Staleys and the Oorang Indians all the way up to the merger with the AFL. It's a book that no football fan should be without.

Only For Football Addicts

Fascinating reading..chock full of never read before information. Dan Daly must have the tenacity of a bulldog.
Surely, it took total dedication to dig up all this information.
As a diehard Giants' fan I, of course, read and reread all the anecdotes about them.
There is a quote in the book from one of the early NFL Commissioners. In the quote, he cautions owners not to let their egos overshadow their good judgement, and to allow their coaches to coach. That quote is something that Jerry Jones needs to read.

Very Entertaining Football Book!

If you enjoy reading about early sports history or anything on football this is the book for you. From the author who wrote one of the best football books ever, The Pro Football Chronicle (with Bob O'Donnell in 1990), comes another enjoyable read. Covering the NFL's first fifty years Dan Daly writes about the league's forgotten era before the game of football became the country's number one sport. Worth reading.

Five Children and It was first published in 1902, and it has remained in print ever since. The Introduction to this edition examines Nesbit's life and her reading, showing how she was poised between the Victorian world and a new era in which children in literature were no longer mere projections of the adult viewpoint. Sandra Kemp examines how the narrative is structured around the acting out of literary fantasies, which always come down to earth. Nesbit combines wonderfully implausible events with the prosaic and familiar, and Kemp illuminates her exploration of the shifting relationship between imagination, literature, and life.

About the Author
English author Edith Nesbit s impressive body of work includes poems, plays, novels, and even ghost stories, however, she is best known for her beloved children s adventure stories, published under the name E. Nesbit. Among Nesbit s best-known works are The Story of the Treasure-Seekers, The Railway Children, The Wouldbegoods and Five Children and It. Nesbit s novels departed from the children s literary tradition of fantasy-worlds popularized by Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Grahame, and instead focused on the adventures to be had from real-life experiences. Nesbit s work inspired other writers like C. S. Lewis, P. L Travers, and J. K. Rowling, and many of her stories have been adapted for film and television. In addition to writing, Nesbit was an activist and co-founded the Fabian Society, a socialist group that provided the foundation for the modern British Labour Party. Nesbit died in 1924.

Sandy delight

This 1902 fantasy, a gift from my parents when I was in fourth or fifth grade, features an irritable Psammead whom Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother dig up in a sand pit. Then the magic begins. The sand-fairy does not like granting wishes, and his misshapen body with bat's ears and snail's eyes bloats when he does. The wishes, lasting only until sunset, all take unexpected, funny turns.
The sand-fairy and other personalities and Victorian details render the magic entirely real-world, believable. This was my favorite children's book and I relived the delight when I found a copy to share with my own children. That this volume is illustrated by one of my favorite people from one of my favorite families triples the delight.
The book is too challenging for independent reading for children under 10, but it's a great read-aloud for small children, as are the classics of Frank Baum, E.B. White and C.S. Lewis.
Edith Nesbit was like J. K. Rowling a single mother in need of a means to support her children. Her books in their era were as popular as Harry Potter in this one. Some of her observations are surprisingly humane. Nesbit's treatment of a clan of Gypsies, for example, transcends the deep prejudice of her time. Not to worry, the book is not preachy or teachy. I loved it; maybe today's kids wouldn't...

I came upon E. Nesbit relatively late in life. I was a 20-something grad student when I found out that the "Bastables" referred to in C. S. Lewis' "The Magicians Nephew" were the children in an E. Nesbit book. Shortly after that, I found a copy of "Five Children and It" and eagerly read it.
I love E. Nesbit.
She writes in a way that is intelligent, snappy, and funny - at least to an adult. There are a lot of little side jokes in the book that seem to be aimed at the parent reading the book. I do think her books may be funnier to grown-ups looking back at childhood than they are to actual children.
And I'm afraid that many of today's children, made into literalists by the media and generally not appreciative of complex, "archaic" or "overly British" (at least among American kids) language may not get it. Which is a pity, really. The Nesbit stories are so good - so imaginative, so full of good use of language. I have read a number of her stories, but I think this is my favorite. It is basically an expansion of the old saying "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it". Five children find a Sand-Fairy (or Psammead) that can grant them wishes. But the sand fairy is a cranky literalist, who interprets the wishes of the children just as they are and wild things happen (e.g., the children wish for great beauty, and then the people around them don't recognize them). This is an extremely entertaining book. Unfortunately, I suspect it may be beyond some of today's youngsters who tend to lack patience with complex or older language.

With the surging popularity of Lemony Snicket's, "A Series of Unfortunate Events", the time has never been better to gently urge children towards those literary classics that sound so mightily similar to their beloved Baudelaire sagas. And of the great children's authors that employed direct narration, few are so wonderful yet rarely remembered as the fantastic Edith Nesbit. The woman who single-handedly redefined the whole kid-fantasy genre. As the Books of Wonder edition of "Five Children and It" is quick to point out, until Nesbit happened along, children's fantasy novels either took place in some "far-off fantasy-land (Alice to Wonderland; Dorothy to Oz)" or simply began and ended in their own magical world (The Princess and the Goblin, for example). No one had really explored normal every day children stumbling across magic. And that, of course, brings us to the fabulous, "Five Children and It". Written in Nesbit's trademark snarky Edwardian style, the tale remains as amusing to children today as it did back in the early 20th century. I remember it fondly from my own tender youth, and since I'm only 27 that should certainly say something.

Now there were once five city children. The eldest was Cyril and the youngest was simply referred to as "the Lamb", since it was only a baby and was dearly adored and spoiled by its family. One summer the children have the delightful opportunity to be left in a seaside house with only their servants to care for them. While exploring the grounds of their new home, the kids come across a strange furry creature in their local gravel pit. It has extended eyes like a snail, the ears of a bat, monkey hands and feet, and a big furry spiderish body. It is, of course, a Psammead (or Sand-fairy) and the kids have a chance to make one wish a day. In your normal Edwardian novel, this might be a good thing and the kids might have delightfully boring adventures for the rest of the book. Not here. The Psammead, you see, is a bit of a jerk. A self-satisfied eternally complaining jerk. And whatsoever the children wish for, be it wings or money, somehow their wishes have a tendency to go awry. Still, when you've a whole summer before you and a pile of wishes waiting to be made, life can get very interesting indeed.

To my mind, Nesbit's best book is without question, "The Phoenix and the Carpet". That said, this is an excellent companion to it. Now I had the pleasure of reading an edition with the original Millar illustrations when I was young. And if you're a fan of pen and ink, that could certainly be a nice choice. But if you want an edition that's really going to get your children's attention, try the Books of Wonder publication with illustrations by Paul O. Zelinsky. Zelinsky, as it notes in the back of the book, had a great deal of difficulty drawing the Psammead since Millar's own version was uncommonly faithful to Nesbit's description. Nonetheless, Zelinsky has the advantage of color and full page spreads. So when the children acquire beautiful rainbow colored wings, you see them here in all their showy glory. Better still are the tiny black and white illustrations on the book's inside covers that show multiple amusing scenes from the book.

And as for Nesbit herself, none can compare. She employs the tone of a conspirator towards her child readers. Often adults are ridiculed for being too blunt and unimaginative to understand what's being said here. The book teems with plots that would be later employed and stolen by such future authors as C.S. Lewis and (more obviously) Edward Eager. In fact, as a kid I often got Eager and Nesbit mixed up in my head. Some critics of this tale sigh with great moans that the kids here don't talk like kids today. Well lah-de-dah. The children in the "Peanuts" comic strip don't talk like kids today either. Shall we just go chuck all of Charles Schultz's work into the Boston Harbor and forget he ever existed? Ladies and gentlemen, we simply cannot go about condemning classic children's books because our slang has changed. Kids today will still love "Five Children and It" and they'll adore its ridiculous plotting. If anything is dated about this book it's the truly odd moments of racism in it. Though Nesbit is to be applauded for giving gypsies a fair shake, the same cannot be said for American Indians. The British obsession with Native Americans is as puzzling now as it was then. So you should at least know that there's one chapter in this book that, if you don't particularly care for Edwardian stereotypes, can be easily skipped past if you so choose. Or not. It's entirely up to you.

In any case, this is a fine fine tale. They don't hardly make `em like this no more (though they certainly try to). A tip of the hat to Ms. Nesbit for all that she has done for children's literature. And a tip of the hat to every kid today that picks the book up for a lark. A memorable tale.

A lifelong Dodgers fan from his early days at Ebbets field, Tobey started writing baseball poems in the 1990s. He is a frequent contributor to Spitball, The Literary Baseball Magazine. The desire to write about baseball morphed into his first book, about Tobey's summer visiting all 30 Major League ballparks.

If you have loved baseball since your childhood, this is the book for you. Tobey Shiverick epitomizes everyone who has played Little League, memorized players, charted stats, traded cards, cheered for a favorite team and just plain loved this sport. He takes us along on his journey to visit all the baseball parks in one season. He allows us to vicariously share in the pleasure of comparing the parks of the present to those of his youth; to marvel at the kindness and generosity of American baseball fans; and to be amazed by the electronic venues with jumbo screens and gourmet food.
Give yourself a gift and read this charming book. Or, give this book as a gift to everyone you know, who has a love affair with baseball.

Tobey Shiverick Is a baseball historian!

A really great and detailed adventure about an older gentleman named Tobey Shiverick and his quest to see all 30 Major League ballparks in one summer. I really enjoyed his poems before the start of every chapter along with his knowledge and history of the game. I have personally traveled to all 30 ballparks and related to Tobey in every way. Check this book out if you're a true baseball or travel fan. Thanks Tobey for sharing your story you should be very proud of your accomplishment. Succinct, powerfully informative book on the research and reality of the benefits of avoiding wheat and eating clean + recipes!

This is a powerful little diet/nutrition eBook that will change the way you think about food and eating. The eBook starts with the research that led to the development of the wheat belly diet (by an MD who thought that whole grains would make him healthier, but instead he got diabetes and fat and sick), as well as the truth of the highly addictive wheat protein gliatin "which is said to have the same effect on the brain as opium does." I know that wheat absolutely bloats me immediately, when I eat it, and that it doesn't make me feel full and I can consume a massive amount in a single day and end up unsatisfied, still feeling super hungry, bloated and sick (tired, sluggish, poor digestion, my skin and scalp itch, and so on) even though I've been tested and do not have celiac disease. The book shares that people who are gluten intolerant may have many of the problems caused by celiac disease, even if they don't test positive for it. I believe what Dr. Mercola and other educated modern physicians state, humans didn't evolve to eat grains. They will make us sick and fat (although if we are very thin, young, exercise a lot, and have a strong immune system and are happy we may not notice the terrible effects of grains in our diet). This book made me aware of the horrifying truth that modern wheat is essentially entirely genetically modified. What I loved about this book is how it emphasizes clean eating, eating whole, nutritious foods as a life plan (and not a temporary diet). The book has recipes too! Happy clean eating~*

Well written with wonderful information

I have read many "diet" books and this is the one that is the easiest to follow and has the best amount of information. This book explains what happens and how you can avoid it. It clearly listed the acceptable foods and provided easy to make recipes. I liked that the author was quick to remind her readers that this wasn't a diet but a way of life. Wonderful read!

Losing that wheat belly

Firstly I would have to acknowledge that I am not one to take advice on how to eat and what not to eat. I want to eat what I like no matter what. In recent times I have become more concerns as my body has started to change in response to this. I had no idea that wheat had this much of an effect on one's body. Am not very sure if I am one for gluten-free eating, but this book does make a case for why we should adopt this diet and kill off the wheat. Most of the food we eat is genetically modified, that has been a personal concern for me, for quite a while now. If you are looking to live healthier or perhaps shed a few pound. Wheat belly may be the book to help.

This an impressive vegetarian pasta recipe book! This book has a simple name but is a real font of uncomplicated and easy to follow recipes. It has a lovely mixture of different types of pasta and also uses a range of ingredients and flavors that has quite changed the way I do tend to think. I appreciated the information on the different types of pasta and the ingredients - so crucial to many with special dietary requirements. It's worth appreciating book!

Amazing! I didn’t expect that there is a healthy alternative for wheat flour, but this book proves that there is. A coconut flours is proven much healthier than wheat flour, because coconut contain more fiber than wheat which is good for our body.

This recipe book was so interesting; it explains why coco flour is very important and how it will benefit our body. I think I will now start to change my healthy way of living when it comes in using dough in our bread and pastries. This book comes with several delicious, luscious, and scrumptious recipes for bread, cake, donuts, muffin, cookies, and other pastries that certainly your family will also love to eat. I highly suggest that you must try if not all but at least few of the recipes in here, it was so yummy! I first tried the Banana coconut flour pancake and it really tastes good, it satisfies my cravings.

I like how the author steps you through the process, first explaining the meaning behind different tasting terms and then presenting some specific examples so that you, the reader, can grab a beer of your own and follow along; developing your personal palate and understanding the unique nose, body, finish, etc. that make each beer unique. Then, the book talks about food pairings and I like that the author includes specific examples that go great with certain cuisine. Other books will often speak in general terms, advising for example to drink pilsners with pizza. This book instead recommends actual brands of beer, for a better match up between food and brew. It even includes recipes for the more creative types and is loaded with colorful photographic illustrations of food and beer for visual enhancement.

This book includes a rundown of notable American craft breweries and of all the sections in the book, this is the one most likely to cause emotional reactions from readers, not because of what is included but because of what isn’t included. There is no doubt that the breweries listed in this section rank among the best/most important, but craft beer aficionados are bound to argue that better breweries exist and were deserving of inclusion. Which are truly best and most notable is a matter of opinion and I know that some readers will not like what they read in this part of the book.

Taken as a whole, however, Beer, Food, and Flavor is a very good guide to craft beer and its growing presence in homes, restaurants, and taverns across this land of ours. It’s a great guide for educational purposes, useful as a reference tool, and very good for both rookies and seasoned craft beer junkies like me. Read it yourself, and discover what makes beer the greatest beverage known to man.

About the Author
Matt Doeden was born in southern Minnesota and lived parts of his childhood in Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Madison, Minnesota. He studied journalism at Mankato State University, where he worked at the college newspaper for three years. In his senior year, he served as the paper's Sports Editor, which put him in charge of the entire sports section, the sports writers, and the photographers. He covered mostly college sports, but also the Minnesota Vikings, who held training camp at MSU. His work allowed him to meet and interview people like Dennis Green, Cris Carter, Robert Smith, and more. Matt went on to work as a sports writer for the Mankato paper, and then he got a job as an editor with a small children's publisher called Capstone Press, and in 2003 he decided to start his own business as a freelance writer and editor. Since then Matt has written and edited hundreds of books. Lots of them are on high-interest topics like cars, sports, and airplanes. He also writes and edits on geography, science, and even math.

Championship games and college football history

Ahhh, the most wonderful time of the year--college football season! Starting this week, Saturdays will begin to be dominated by college football, with everyone's eyes, even from week one, on the question, Who will make the four spots in the college football playoff? In The College Football Championship, Matt Doeden covers the history of the college football championship. From the early polls, to the growing number of bowl games, to the BCS, to the playoff, which began with the 2014 season, the question of who is the best team in the land has never, really and truly, been satisfactorily answered.

Doeden tells the history of how the champion has been determined, and the many controversies over that determination. He covers memorable championship games and memorable plays in championship games. He describes some of the dynasties that have dominated the game.

My big disappointment with the book is that, due to Baylor's losing a game they should have won in West Virginia, plus a few other teams winning a game or two against the odds, Baylor did not get to play in the first college football playoff. (Five major conferences, four places in the playoff. Someone will always be disappointed.) I would have liked the book much better if Baylor would have been on the cover instead of Ohio State!

That quibble aside, this is a great resource, gathering some highlights of college football history and whetting my appetite for football season. With lots of pictures and short sections, his target audience is probably elementary and middle school audiences, but football fans of all ages can appreciate looking back at these championship highlights.
