God, I could kill for a coffee...

This is the first story that I've read from this author and I did really enjoy it. To combine Norse Gods from mythology with the local police department of today is quite a feat indeed. From the first few pages, I expected this to be a murder mystery type novel which would have been just fine, not quite my bag, but I would have read it anyway. Only when the Gods entered the arena did my curiosity peak further - that was a big plus point for me.

I loved the idea of a mundane coffee shop housing enough Gods to destroy all mankind. The thought of being served a Latte by Odin, or Thor himself really is quite something. It is clear from reading this that a lot of thought went into the dynamics of it. If it were possible, I'd have rated it at a 4.5 star read. One of the things I did like was the portrayal of our would-be heroine, Casey. A girl with a past which lead to a new identity and life, now faced with a battle for her life simply against those not of this world. Her persona, detailed to such a degree as a reader gets a real sense of who she is, was brilliantly done. There's even a flicker of unrequited romance spattered throughout this novel - it would seem that even Gods have their weaknesses.

So now, I hear you ask, if it's that good, why the 4 star? Bear with me. This book combines Norse fiction with elements of Norse mythology fact. I found that a little confusing. Floki, according to mythology, was actually a Viking boat builder, creator of the Longboats and right hand man to Ragnar. He wasn't a God as such. If we're talking Gods, that would be Loki who, as we're told in the story is aided by Hel. In Norse Mythology, Hel is actually Loki's son. While both Floki, and Loki have the same characteristics, only one of them is an actual mythological God with a son by the name of Hel. That would be Loki. I'm not sure if this was an oversight or intentional, however, if a story has characters such as Odin, Thor, Hel, Floki (Loki) and the other God brothers, I think maintaining consistency - Norse fact, or fiction, would have been a much better benefit to the story. Having said that, it's the only element to an otherwise great tale that stood out for me.

For a first read of this author, it won't be my last. Persona, another title, is winding it's way up my TBR list and I'll get to that soon. I really enjoyed the writing style, pace of the book - which picked up considerably as soon as the Gods showed up, and the overall plots, twists and turns the story took.

In closing then, a super tale with plenty of thrills, spills and tense action combined with Norse Gods, the boys and girls in blue and an everyday coffee shop that'll keep you reading to the end which, incidentally, was also rounded off quite nicely. If amazon allowed, it would be a 4.5 star read from me and I look forward to reading more from Ceri Bayden in the near future.

So much going on!

First I have to say the cover and the blurb are fantastic, second, so is the story. This is the first book I have read from this author and it won't be the last.

In Twe12ve Ceri Bladen has taken a complex and elaborate plot and told it in an interesting and simple way. The structure of this novel has been well thought out and is cleverly brought to a conclusion with all tie nicely wrapped up. There is so much going on in Twe12ve but I never lost sight of the story.

As you read you can feel the suspense build up as the pages are turned. In the world of the human characters life becomes pretty hectic for them. All the characters are interesting, the human ones are believable and the not so human are complex, some are likeable and some you just want them to get their just desserts.

I mentioned that there is so much going on in Twe12ve - stalking, building relationships, plotting, fighting, chasing and loving - all are brought together to deliver a great story.

Norse Gods go wild

I really like the idea that gods wander among us doing godly things and generally causing problems. That was the central tenet of Douglas Adams' The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, it was an integral part of Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Anansi Boys, and I used a similar idea in Henchmen and Arise.

The one thing, though, that all of those books had in common was the gods were really just doing god stuff and were mostly unconcerned with human things. Today's book, Twe12ve by Ceri Bladen, changes that dynamic somewhat. The story of Twe12ve revolves around two groups of Norse gods. Naturally, the groups are at odds with each other over a secret buried in Odin's vault; one group wants to keep the secret safe (they're the good guys) and the other wants to steal it and hand it off to pharma company, presumably so the pharma company can make sure it never gets out.

And that's kind of an interesting twist on the god genre. While it's never actually revealed what the pharma company has promised the bad guys in return for the secret, one can only assume it must be impressive to catch the attention of a bunch of Norse gods.

If I had one problem with Twe12ve it's that some of the mythology is a little off. I won't worry about the names (Floki instead of Loki), because names can change and it's entirely possible Loki just wanted to use a different name. He's a god; he can do stuff like that without even bothering to fill out a change of name form.

The gods make plenty of references to wanting to go home. Unfortunately, they want to go back to Ragnarok. Ragnarok is an event, though, not a place; it's the end times when the great battle will happen. Asgard is where the gods lived. The cool people got to hang in Valhalla - a large hall inside of Asgard.

Aside from that, Twe12ve was a fun read.

but all dishes are really good even at first time

I have both cooking pots, but I’ve used my pressure cooker to cook just rice and some other cereals. I’ve got more recipes to try with this set, need some practice , but all dishes are really good even at first time. Glad to have these cooking books, excited to try most of recipes, now I can combine two cooking ways.

It's good to see that not everything looks like soup. This book looks inspiring enough to temp me to try the recipes. There is a good variety of recipes. There were a few not so inspiring, but overall it looks like a good book with how to maintain your pressure cooker.

No portion sizes listed for recipes in the Atkins book!. Most all cookbooks include portion sizes which are definitely needed in diet books. This is a defect in the book that should be addressed in order for it to be helpful.

Schuppe, a Pulitzer Prize winner, explores the far more frequent rags-to-rags scenario, focusing on a few people involved in the life of Rodney Mason of Newark, New Jersey. Mason was, at times, a high-school baseball star, gang member, dope dealer, and all-around badass. But after he was shot in a dispute over a woman and confined to a wheelchair, he decided to try to help kids avoid the gang life by getting them interested in baseball. Against all odds and surmounting crushing obstacles, he did just that. In addition to telling Mason’s story, Schuppe examines the lives of the kids Mason tries to help. One has virtually no place to live. Dad’s in prison, Mom is often ineffectual, so he moves from cousin to sister to grandma and back again, changing schools each time. Keep pressing on? Pass on the easy money available on the street? Kids do it, but, as Schuppe points out, it is so damn hard. That’s the takeaway here. There is poverty defined by an absence of money, but the real poverty may be the absence of opportunity. Baseball Is Their Chance to Win

Much to the chagrin of Major League Baseball and baseball coaches at every level, the sport has pretty much been abandoned by the black youth of America's inner cities. This is not a new problem, and Major League executives have thrown a lot of money at the problem in recent years by building youth ballparks and providing equipment to teams willing to give the sport a shot.

But, as Jonathan Schuppe points out in A Chance to Win, largely due to peer pressure, black kids are still reluctant to take up the game. They consider it a "white" sport and by huge margins give their attention to basketball and football instead. Schuppe points out, too, that baseball is a sport whose skills are most often passed on directly from father to son. This is a huge handicap in an environment in which fathers are, more often than not, not living in the same home as their children - and are unlikely to have learned the game from their own fathers, in the first place.

Rodney Mason, a Newark kid now in his forties, knew early on that he was good at baseball. He was a prized pitcher on his high school team, and had the potential to parley his baseball skills into a bright future for himself. Unfortunately, Rodney was also pretty good at dealing drugs from a local street corner - but, as Rodney would eventually learn, a "pretty good" drug dealer does not stay out of trouble forever.

Although Rodney's drug dealing always did have the potential for getting him killed, his undoing actually came at the hands of a rival who targeted Rodney for a drive-by shooting because of their dispute over a woman. Rodney survived the shooting but woke up paralyzed from the waist down. His baseball-playing days might have been over - but Rodney was soon back out on the street dealing drugs from his wheelchair.

Then, when the city of Newark decided to clean up the old ball field across the street from Rodney's apartment, he decided to get involved. He hoped that baseball, the only thing he was ever exceptional at in his life, could save him before it was too late. He hoped to use baseball to save a few of the neighborhood kids from the street life that had crippled him - and in the process to turn his own life around. But it would not be easy - and A Chance to Win explains why.

Over the course of a couple of seasons, the book closely follows "Coach Rock," two of his better players, and the father of two other players as they struggle mightily to turn their hopes into reality. For all of them, it turns out to be a case of "two steps forward and one step back." Life might be stacked against the Newark Eagles, but baseball gives them a chance to make the most of their potential rather than simply succumbing to the city's street life. Theirs is a touching story with a message of hope. Baseball is their "chance to win."

This is a page turner!

I know nothing about baseball, sports or Newark and I found this book totally engrossing, interesting and thoughtfully written. This is the type of book that you stay up late reading "just one more chapter" because you can't wait to read what happens next. It's painful and real and I highly recommend this to everyone!

This book nicely ties together all the different stories of the boys, men and city of Newark that is totally relevant today and you can't help wondering how it all ends throughout the book.

This is honest reporting at it's best and really inspires you to examine your own life and those around you!

Must read!

There are at least two key measures of a great book for me: One, I can't stop reading it; and two, I don't want to finish it because I don't want to leave the world and the people it has made real for me. This book meets both measures in abundance, and so much more. This is not just a sports book, though it centers on a ragtag team of inner-city Little League players; it's not just a book about urban blight, though it is rich with backstory and sidebars into Newark's history and politics. It's a compelling human story about people bucking odds that have been stacked against them from birth -- as well as struggling with their own mistakes and shortcomings as they try, sometimes over and over, to do the right thing. Schuppe doesn't cast a Disney glow over anyone; this story is gritty and real and often heartbreaking. The book's honesty, for me, points to something easy to lose sight of in our culture's demand for easy answers, tidy romantic endings, and flawless heroes: There are none. But that shouldn't stop us from doing what we can. The triumph of the human spirit depicted here is often messy and imperfect but no less uplifting for that. I felt I'd been changed myself by witnessing, through Schuppe's eyes, the network of children and parents whose lives intersect through ex-con Rodney Mason and his simple desire to make a positive contribution by starting a Little League team. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's an utterly engrossing and important work of journalism.

I often hear of one using his rat trap to trap one rat and throwing it away. It is sad, they are wasting that trap, they only used it once! Well, rat traps can be used over and over again, so do not throw them away. I'm an avid trapper, and I thought to myself, "I wonder if a rat trap can trap squirrels." I put my thought to work. Lo and behold it worked, well, sometimes. I wanted to make it better. I quickly then started thinking of mods to make the rat trap more powerful. Adding teeth, bone crushers, and more kill bar strength were my first ideas. It worked, almost to well. I ended up catching not only squirrels, but all kinds of small game. Rabbits, chipmunks, and birds were just some of the animal I trapped. I continued coming up with ideas to make a rat trap so much more than just a rat trap. I decided to put all my rat trap's mods into a small book. Once I finished the book, I had it published. The book turned out to be a hit, for it made a rat trap so much more than just a rat trap!

About the Author
Blake Thomas Alma is the author of many books, The Outdoorsmen Bible, Harvesting Nature's Bait Shop, This World can be Cold and Bitter, More Than Just a Rat Trap, and The Godly Outdoorsman's Devotionals.
