Handy Book For A Vegan Bean Lover

As a vegan, beans are a staple of my diet. With chick peas and lentils being my favorite beans, Middle Eastern is my favorite cuisine when dining out. I would love to do more Indian food but I am allergic to peppers. That means pretty much any curry and lots of other Indian dishes are out of the question for me.

I would love to prepare Indian dishes at home with some modification to the recipe, substituting other things for peppers, chili oil, etc. I realize it isn't authentic but it is as close as I will ever be able to get.

This book has a nice assortment of recipes for me to begin experimenting with as well as a section explaining what I will need to stock my pantry with in order to get started. Having never prepared this type of cuisine before I find that information to be invaluable.

I've read through the book, selected some recipes to get started with and am excited to give it a try. Thank you, Ms. Bidkar for giving me a good vegan starting point for this new adventure!

Use up your lentils and chickpeas!

The beginning of the book is sort of a cooking lesson about Daal, followed by some delicious recipes. The author also gives information about the background of each dish, great for those of us who like to know more about our food than just how to make it. It's a good start if you want to branch out from basic bean and lentil recipes. I started to work my way through all of the recipes and everything has been delicious. My favorites so far are the Palak Daal (spinach and lentil stew), Daal Kolhapuri, and the Tomato Daal. As a bonus, nothing has been very expensive or time consuming to prepare. Would have been great to have back in graduate school!

Highly recommended for vegans/vegetarians.

A good book to have in your kitchen

30 Days of Daal is what the title says, 30 different types of daal from across India, in all it’s various styles and varieties. It covers daals from the simple Yellow Moong Daal to the Parsi Dhansak and Oriya Dalma.

The layout of the book needs work and as ebook I would have liked to see more navigation options. I used the books on a variety of eReader apps on the phone and on my Kindle. The Kindle offered the best experience but there were issues there too.

Another things that stands out is the lack of serving sizes. This made for quantity goof-ups in the recipes I tried. Each recipe has an image of what the daal looks like, the set of ingredients needed and the method of preparation. The instructions are simple to follow and Pragati Bidkar has also added notes to make it easier for the first timer.

There is also a chapter at the end with details about lentils, rice, spices, oil, and cookware used and where you can get them. This section is specially helpful for Non-Indians or Indians who live in the US.

Over all, a good book to have in the kitchen. I recommend it for all who love the Indian cuisine, especially if you like cooking it.
