“Downright thrilling; [Conefrey] really gives us a sense of what it must have been like, battling exhaustion and frigid temperatures to get to the top of the world…. A must-read.”
— Booklist

At 28,251 ft, K2 might be almost 800 ft shorter than Everest, but it’s a far harder climb. In this definitive account, Mick Conefrey grippingly describes the early attempts to reach the summit and provides a fascinating exploration of the first ascent’s complex legacy. From the drug-addicted occultist Aleister Crowley to Achille Compagnoni and Lindo Lacedelli, the Italian duo who finally made it to the summit, The Ghosts of K2 charts how a slew of great men became fixated on this legendary mountain.

Through exclusive interviews with surviving team members and their families, and unrivalled access to diaries and letters that have been archived around the world, Conefrey evokes the true atmosphere of the Savage Mountain and explores why it remains the ‘mountaineer’s mountain’, despite a history steeped in controversy and death. Wrought with tension, and populated by tragic heroes and eccentric dreamers, The Ghosts of K2 is a masterpiece of mountaineering literature.

Fascinating account of the attempts and failures to climb K2 and survive
By Kent Price
The author gives a fascinating account of the attempts to climb K2. The book is divided as follows: (Prologue) the mountain with no name; (1) the beast and the prince; (2) the Harvard boys; (3) a climbing party; (4) high ambition; (5) the fall out; (6) unfinished business; (7) teamwork; (8) man down; (9) the old road; (10) the flowers of Italy; (11) the spoils of victory; (12) the base lie?; (Epilogue) living up to your name?; (Acknowledgements); (Notes); (Bibliography); and (Images).

Written in 2015, this is an excellent overview of expeditions to K2 from 1901 through recent years. The difficulties of K2 (further north than Everest and thus colder weather) result in many fewer climbing attempts and higher fatality rates than on Everest. The book is very well written and will appeal to climbers and readers of adventure stories (myself). I highly recommend this book.

Lies by Conefrey!! I guess his conscience finally got the better of Lacedelli.
By Sloan2010
Lies and a pure work of fiction created by Mick Conefrey to sell some books, while pretending to be a factual recount of the 1st successful ascent of K2.

Walter Bonatti was a hero along with his Pakistani sherpa, named Mahdi. These two carried the oxygen tanks to what was supposed to be the final camp IX location, located at about 27,000 feet up K2. However, Campagnoni and Lacedelli had ascended roughly 100 meters above the agreed upon location for that final camp IX knowing that Bonatti and Mahdi would never be able to reach their hidden new location by nightfall. They also hid their new location by moving about 200 feet to the left of the agreed upon final ascent line above e the agreed upon camp IX location to ensure that Bonatti would not be able to locate them. They also repeatedly ignored calls from Bonatti that fateful evening asking them for assistance. They did this to ensure that Bonatti, the strongest climber of them all would not be the one to make the final ascent of K2.

Lacedelli himself admitted in 2004, that he and Campagnoni had intentionally hid their location that evening to prevent Bonatti and Mahdi from locating them. This would guarantee that Bonatti would not be part of the final ascent of K2 the next day. Yet, Conefrey perpetuates the decades of Campagnoni lies to the contrary.

By intentionally hiding themselves, Campagnoni and Lacedelli guaranteed that Bonatti and Mahdi would be "hung out to dry" and trapped without a tent or camp supplies that evening with temperatures dropping below -25 celsius. Mahdi ended up losing all ten of his toes from the extreme frostbite he suffered that evening. Campagnoni then had the audacity after the expedition was complete to tell further lies and claim that Bonatti had abandoned Mahdi and that Bonatti was responsible for Mahdi's frostbite and loss of his toes.

Campagnoni told 50+ years worth of lies that Bonatti had used some of the oxygen intended for he and Lacedelli that evening, and that Campagnoni had "supposedly" run out of oxygen before reaching the K2 summit the next day. Campagnoni claimed that Bonatti was carrying the oxygen tanks to the camp IX location that afternoon, and the oxygen masks as well, which permitted Bonatti to "supposedly" use some of the oxygen himself that evening. A PROVEN lie by Campagnoni!

Mahdi and the 2 other climbers, who assisted Bonatti with bringing the oxygen tanks to the missing camp IX that afternoon have testified that they and Bonatti were only carrying oxygen tanks, and no masks. Campagnoni and Lacedelli already had their masks higher up on the mountain. And now we now have actual photographic evidence uncovered by Robert Marshall of Campagnoni standing on the K2 summit breathing oxygen through his oxygen mask. Yet, Campagnoni previously lied and claimed he ran out of oxygen before reaching the K2 summit. That photo proves Campagnoni lied about running out of oxygen prior to making the K2 summit, and yet Conefrey continues to perpetuate those lies.

The truth is that the two heroes of that ascent along with a host of others were Walter Bonatti and the local Pakistani mountaineer, named Mahdi. They risked their lives to carry those oxygen tanks to the final camp IX, only to be betrayed by the actions of Campagnoni and Lacedelli.

Shameful and criminal on both the part of Campagnoni, and Lacedelli. They were both personally responsible for slandering Bonatti for decades, and for taking all ten of Mahdi's toes from him along with much of his remaining quality of life. At least, Lacedelli finally came clean in 2004 and admitted to the decades of lies that had been told against Bonatti. I guess his conscience finally got the better of him. This is stuff anyone can easily do an internet search on. Campagnoni went to his grave a criminal, a slanderer, and a liar, certainly no hero. And both the Italian and Pakistani governments are also culpable for perpetuating those decades of lies to "maintain their relationships" and create two false heroes in Campagnoni and Lacedelli.

And just as bad, now we have hacks like Mick Conefrey perpetuating the Campagnoni/Lacedelli lies as well.

Amazon, why are you selling this rubbish and not doing your own due diligence to call this writer of fiction and lies named Conefrey out for his lies???

Not just the first effort - but all of them :)
By L. Anderson
A bit misleading, the book not only covers the first attempt, but covers all of them, fascinating accounts of the attempts to climb K2.
This is a good overview of expeditions to K2 from 1901 through recent years. The difficulties of K2 (further north than Everest and thus colder weather) result in many fewer climbing attempts and higher fatality rates than on Everest. Something very nicely brought out is the retrospective consideration (not done in the early climbing attempts) of the effects of altitude on the climbers. Some weird stuff/actions occurred that none of the climbers would consider at lower altitudes. Until the 50's, many climbers thought that the would "get used to" the oxygen deprivation of higher altitudes, that the longer they were "up there" the better it would be. The exact opposite of what we now know to be true.

Full disclosure: Oliver Eaton (Tony) Cromwell was my grandfather. I grew up in Europe in the 60's spending winters with him in Zermatt, and as a young officer commanding a border camp spent quite a bit of time with him in the 70's and early 80's when he moved to Interlaken before he and Georgia's death in the mid-80's. He willed me his personal notes and book collection.

The part o=n the 1939 climb is an excellent study in leadership or the lack thereof. The strength of the work is its focus on the personalities and the authors do a very nice job, presenting some interesting information re: Weissner, Durrance, Cromwell and the others members as well. After reading this, you would be well served if you read "Last Man on the Mountain".

The author appear to make a real effort to avoid biases. They do a very nice job of helping the reader understand the relative backgrounds of the tream members. In the attempt, four people died, one of which was Wolfe, the other three were Sherpa's, who died heroically trying to bring Wolfe down, for which role they were not trained, equipped or being paid to do. While there is plenty of blame to go around, Wolfe's death needs to be laid at Weissner's feet.

Something touched on but not really explored is that as the author noted, Cromwell - at least in terms of quantity (Weissner was undoubtedly more skilled) - had more experience than anyone except Weissner - there's at least one mountain named after him (Mt. Cromwell) in Canada. Cromwell was also mature (47-the rest were MUCH younger) and well-educated and again, as the author notes, discussed with Weissner his (Cromwell's) concern about prolonged exposure to high altitude for human health and performance - which is why Cromwell made it clear from the very beginning that he would be glad to join the K2 expedition - help lead the effort - and help fund the effort ($1,700 then was like $45,000 today) - but that he was not interested in going any higher than the base camp. Cromwell, with decades of experience, had a better perspective on maintaining health than the younger men - who had the approach that they would simply "gut thru" any discomfort - which is fine for an afternoon's climb but not so practical for weeks on end. Cromwell's personal observations re: prolonged exposure to high altitudes was not widely accepted until much later - and Weissner and the younger member simply paid it no attention.

Cromwell was a seasoned, experienced, mature mountaineer, who found that Weissner`s unwillingness to accept any team input other than money and physical labor (ie. Weissner refused to even appear to consider ANY advice Cromwell tried to give him, be it mountaineering, or the best approaches for leading Americans, and then tried to order him up K2 after promising him that he would ONLY be the base camp commander - health concerns be damned) - put the expedition at risk, with tragic consequences. As the authors note: the American's essentially mentally "checked out" with regard to Weissner - they were perfectly happy as long as he was anywhere but where they were.

This book is a simple fairy tale by an accomplished writer of many excellent volumes, including three prominent novels for children: Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden. It is charming and uplifting, heartwarming and encouraging. This edition is not illustrated.

Review
"A beautiful boy, the offspring of royal parents, grows up and is crowned king of a sad land that only he can lead to the path of peace and prosperity.

Hodgson Burnett has received much praise over the last century for "Little Lord Fauntleroy" and "The Secret Garden," but this story has slumbered in obscurity for more than 80 years. It was resuscitated by Griffith, who received a dusty copy from a friend a few years back.

The book has a New Age message of peace and cooperation that's in keeping with its publisher's usual fare, but no one can deny the timeliness of the story's message: Anger deflects us from the important tasks we face." -- Press-Telegram, February 7, 1994

"Sure to put stars into a young person's eyes." -- NQ, NAPRA ReVIEW, Holiday Issue 1993

"The Land of the Blue Flower" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a classic story which has been out of print since 1938, weaves the magical tale of Amor, a young king who is orphaned. The book develops the theme of living in harmony with nature and demonstrates the healing power of love." -- Science of Mind, August 1994

From the Publisher
To our readers: The books we publish are our contribution to an emerging world based on cooperation rather than on competition, on affirmation of the human spirit rather than on self-doubt, and on the certainty that all humanity is connected. Our goal is to touch as many lives as possible with a message of hope for a better world.--Hal and Linda Kramer, Publishers

About the Author

"Blue Flowers" = Life, Love & Beauty
By A Customer
This charming fairytale by the author of the beloved _Secret Garden_ is not just for children, but is a kind of "spiritual tonic" for folks of all ages. Ever since discovering HJKramer's magical edition, I have turned to _Blue Flower_ during times of spiritual or physical depletion and have always felt uplifted and enlivened by its positive message and exquisite artwork.
The book came to me in a strange, "Heaven-directed" way, during a time of immense grief over the death of a relative. I was ripe for its insightful messages that, "If you fill your mind with a beautiful thought, there will be no room for an ugly one"; and "There is no time for anger..." I have always been bolstered by this particular edition, so gracefully illustrated by Judith Ann Griffith, and over the years have gifted a few special souls, adults and children alike, with copies of this delightful book.
The "blue flowers" at the heart of the story have gradually become a sort of shorthand-code between me and cherished friends/relatives; and on special occasions, we sometimes exchange "blue flowers" as a colorful reminder of truths taught in Frances Hodgson Burnett's tale. The "blue-flower code" is simple and speaks directly to the heart, saying, "We choose love, life, and joy over fear, bitterness, and grudges." (Given current global upheavals and conflicts, maybe certain folks in High Places would do well to read this little book and internalize its simple truths.)
_The Land of the Blue Flower_ is very enthusiastically recommended for hearts of all ages, and Kramer's gorgeous edition is sure to become a family favorite.

Beautiful story, ugly binding...
By K Bunyard
My daughter fell in love with this book after checking it out at the library. The version she read was a beautiful picture book with pages and pictures as wonderful as the story. She had earned a treat and only wanted this book.

Let me just say how disappointing it is to open a box and find a small, flimsy paperback with not one, single picture! The cover pictured is the actual book cover and inside is small type covering pages with small margins. Only half of the pages are even printed; the book ends just over half-way through the pages of the book.

This is a beautiful story, and I realize that this is a rare publication, but it is still a letdown to find such a book especially at this price.

Amazon is not telling the truth about editions.
By Annette Dellemonico
I have bought several copies of this book previously and as the person comments below, it was a beautiful picture book with a beautiful paper illustrated jacket on the book. What is being offered here now, is not the same version of the book. Why Amazon stopped offering the beautiful version is a mystery, because I bought several copies of the beautiful version just a few years ago, so it is untrue that this book has been out of print since the 1930's. I did order two copies of the paperback version since I was no longer able to find the nice edition, and what a disappointment the paperback edition is. From the comments below, I would never order the above reprint of the original edition, and there are not enough pages available to preview to get any idea what it looks like inside. I wanted to give more copies of the really nice edition as very special gifts. What happened to it Amazon?

Mennonite Men Can Cook, Too: Celebrating Hospitality with 170 Delicious Recipes, by Willard Roth

Willard Roth is a topnotch cook who grew up in a sprawling Iowa farm family. He has always loved food—growing it, preparing it, eating it. As a Mennonite church leader and journalist, he is as well-known for the dinners he prepares as he is for his sermons or editorials. The man has traveled North America and much of the world, always making notes about the great meals he’s eaten. Then he’s routinely gone home and fiddled around in the kitchen until he can make the dishes he’s loved eating.

In this book are recipes inspired by the food made by his Mennonite mother and grandmothers. Other recipes are inspired from the monasteries he’s visited in Ireland and England. There are recipes of the food he’s eaten in Ghana, Jamaica, Cyprus, the Netherlands, India, and Nepal.

Roth mixes his keen food memories with his years of experience in the kitchen to create recipes that work for the home cook. Among his Soup recipes are Thai Coconut Shrimp, Chilled Melon Mint, and Hawkeye Corn and Chilies Chowder. His Small Plates recipes include Cheese Grits with Chunky Tomato Sauce, and Corn Leek Bake. Among his Mains are Lemon Turkey Stir-Fry with Pasta, Monastery Cornbread Casserole, Hearty Polenta Florentine, and Pecan Crunch Salmon Bake. Plus Beer-Braised Short Ribs and Balsamic Honey-Glazed Lamb Chops.

Cooks will also find Chutneys, Cordials, Rum Sauces, and Relishes. And lots of Vegetables and Salads. You’ll love the tons of Cakes, Candies and Cookies, Pies and Puddings, and Fruit and Frozen Desserts.

Willard Roth breathes hospitality and gives us the tools to practice it ourselves, along with unforgettable, easy-to-prepare recipes.

Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Good Books and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of cookbooks, including books on juicing, grilling, baking, frying, home brewing and winemaking, slow cookers, and cast iron cooking. We’ve been successful with books on gluten-free cooking, vegetarian and vegan cooking, paleo, raw foods, and more. Our list includes French cooking, Swedish cooking, Austrian and German cooking, Cajun cooking, as well as books on jerky, canning and preserving, peanut butter, meatballs, oil and vinegar, bone broth, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Guys in the kitchen

Book Review

Roth, Willard. Mennonite Men Can Cook,Too: Celebrating Hospitality with 170 Delicious Recipes. Good Books. New York, New York. 2015. 308 pp.

I have known Willard Roth for nearly a decade as a spiritual companion, worship leader and fellow pilgrim. When he said he had a book published, I expected it to be a book on spirituality or worship or a collection of stories from his many trips to Ireland. Imagine my surprise to learn it was a cook book! And quite a cook book: wonderful, easy to follow recipes that offer a wide variety of delicious dishes, beautifully illustrated and offering complete menus. This is a book that is easy to use for the inexperienced cook and interesting to use by the experienced chef.

The best way to review a cookbook is by actually using – and tasting – the recipes! I invited two other couples and we had a great night experimenting. We started with English cucumber and onions (p.33) as an appetizer, a recipe from Ghana, and what an appetizer it proved to be, tangy with a touch of red pepper flakes. It was even better the next day. Our entrée was baked herb turkey roast (p.88), served with happy beets (p.160) and brown rice with pecans and apples (p. 65) and Aunt Effie’s rhubarb pudding (p.204) for dessert. The turkey consisted of only four ingredients, yet it was savory and aromatic; definitely to focal point of the meal. The beets and rice were delightful accompaniments. You will need to try them to see what made the beets so happy! Aunt Effie’s rhubarb pudding was a sweet, simple satisfying finishing touch. I love rhubarb and have enjoyed it in many different configurations; this is the first time I’ve had rhubarb pudding. The book also includes rhubarb jam, cake, muffins and chutney! The evening was a wonderful way to explore the book and experiment with its recipes, activities that the book intentionally invites and welcomes.

The poached salmon (p.278) is incredibly quick and easy and guaranteed to get a compliment. Other aunts are also honored: Barbara, Lucille and Stella. Everyone needs to know how to make preacher cookies (p.195), ten minutes prep time and no bake! My wife loves beets and Willard includes a unique beet slaw (p.40). Many of the recipes include personal insights or anecdotes. Willard also includes some favorite recipes from guest cooks, proving that he is not the only Mennonite man who can cook!

If you enjoy cook books or cooking or think you would like to try, I heartily recommend this book! You can sit and read it through as a book, enjoying the anecdotes and photos as enhancements or you can put on your apron and chef’s hat and put it to work in the kitchen. Buy a copy for your favorite male chef, or chef to be, and encourage him to make the kitchen his own!

Absolutely great.... I am not a 'cook' any longer since my family is no longer here to prepare for. But loved the simple recipes - all served with LOVE. .

CHAPTER FIRST

Burzee

Have you heard of the great Forest of Burzee? Nurse used to sing of it when I was a child. She sang of the big tree-trunks, standing close together, with their roots intertwining below the earth and their branches intertwining above it; of their rough coating of bark and queer, gnarled limbs; of the bushy foliage that roofed the entire forest, save where the sunbeams found a path through which to touch the ground in little spots and to cast weird and curious shadows over the mosses, the lichens and the drifts of dried leaves.

The Forest of Burzee is mighty and grand and awesome to those who steal beneath its shade. Coming from the sunlit meadows into its mazes it seems at first gloomy, then pleasant, and afterward filled with never-ending delights.

For hundreds of years it has flourished in all its magnificence, the silence of its inclosure unbroken save by the chirp of busy chipmunks, the growl of wild beasts and the songs of birds.

Yet Burzee has its inhabitants—for all this. Nature peopled it in the beginning with Fairies, Knooks, Ryls and Nymphs. As long as the Forest stands it will be a home, a refuge and a playground to these sweet immortals, who revel undisturbed in its depths.

Civilization has never yet reached Burzee. Will it ever, I wonder?

CHAPTER SECOND

The Child of the Forest

Once, so long ago our great-grandfathers could scarcely have heard it mentioned, there lived within the great Forest of Burzee a wood-nymph named Necile. She was closely related to the mighty Queen Zurline, and her home was beneath the shade of a widespreading oak. Once every year, on Budding Day, when the trees put forth their new buds, Necile held the Golden Chalice of Ak to the lips of the Queen, who drank therefrom to the prosperity of the Forest. So you see, she was a nymph of some importance, and, moreover, it is said she was highly regarded because of her beauty and grace.

When she was created she could not have told; Queen Zurline could not have told; the great Ak himself could not have told. It was long ago when the world was new and nymphs were needed to guard the forests and to minister to the wants of the young trees. Then, on some day not remembered, Necile sprang into being; radiant, lovely, straight and slim as the sapling she was created to guard.

Her hair was the color that lines a chestnut-bur; her eyes were blue in the sunlight and purple in the shade; her cheeks bloomed with the faint pink that edges the clouds at sunset; her lips were full red, pouting and sweet. For costume she adopted oak-leaf green; all the wood-nymphs dress in that color and know no other so desirable. Her dainty feet were sandal-clad, while her head remained bare of covering other than her silken tresses.

Necile’s duties were few and simple. She kept hurtful weeds from growing beneath her trees and sapping the earth-food required by her charges. She frightened away the Gadgols, who took evil delight in flying against the tree-trunks and wounding them so that they drooped and died from the poisonous contact. In dry seasons she carried water from the brooks and pools and moistened the roots of her thirsty dependents.

That was in the beginning. The weeds had now learned to avoid the forests where wood-nymphs dwelt; the loathsome Gadgols no longer dared come nigh; the trees had become old and sturdy and could bear the drought better than when fresh-sprouted. So Necile’s duties were lessened, and time grew laggard, while succeeding years became more tiresome and uneventful than the nymph’s joyous spirit loved.

Truly the forest-dwellers did not lack amusement. Each full moon they danced in the Royal Circle of the Queen. There were also the Feast of Nuts, the Jubilee of Autumn Tintings, the solemn ceremony of Leaf Shedding and the revelry of Budding Day. But these periods of enjoyment were far apart, and left many weary hours between.

That a wood-nymph should grow discontented was not thought of by Necile’s sisters. It came upon her only after many years of brooding. But when once she had settled in her mind that life was irksome she had no patience with her condition, and longed to do something of real interest and to pass her days in ways hitherto undreamed of by forest nymphs. The Law of the Forest alone restrained her from going forth in search of adventure.

While this mood lay heavy upon pretty Necile it chanced that the great Ak visited the Forest of Burzee and allowed the wood-nymphs—as was their wont—to lie at his feet and listen to the words of wisdom that fell from his lips. Ak is the Master Woodsman of the world; he sees everything, and knows more than the sons of men.

That night he held the Queen’s hand, for he loved the nymphs as a father loves his children; and Necile lay at his feet with many of her sisters and earnestly harkened as he spoke.

“We live so happily, my fair ones, in our forest glades,” said Ak, stroking his grizzled beard thoughtfully, “that we know nothing of the sorrow and misery that fall to the lot of those poor mortals who inhabit the open spaces of the earth. They are not of our race, it is true, yet compassion well befits beings so fairly favored as ourselves. Often as I pass by the dwelling of some suffering mortal I am tempted to stop and banish the poor thing’s misery. Yet suffering, in moderation, is the natural lot of mortals, and it is not our place to interfere with the laws of Nature.”

“Nevertheless,” said the fair Queen, nodding her golden head at the Master Woodsman, “it would not be a vain guess that Ak has often assisted these hapless mortals.”

Ak smiled.

“Sometimes,” he replied, “when they are very young—‘children,’ the mortals call them—I have stopped to rescue them from misery. The men and women I dare not interfere with; they must bear the burdens Nature has imposed upon them. But the helpless infants, the innocent children of men, have a right to be happy until they become full-grown and able to bear the trials of humanity. So I feel I am justified in assisting them. Not long ago—a year, maybe—I found four poor children huddled in a wooden hut, slowly freezing to death. Their parents had gone to a neighboring village for food, and had left a fire to warm their little ones while they were absent. But a storm arose and drifted the snow in their path, so they were long on the road. Meantime the fire went out and the frost crept into the bones of the waiting children.”

“Poor things!” murmured the Queen softly. “What did you do?”

“I called Nelko, bidding him fetch wood from my forests and breathe upon it until the fire blazed again and warmed the little room where the children lay. Then they ceased shivering and fell asleep until their parents came.”

“I am glad you did thus,” said the good Queen, beaming upon the Master; and Necile, who had eagerly listened to every word, echoed in a whisper: “I, too, am glad!”

“And this very night,” continued Ak, “as I came to the edge of Burzee I heard a feeble cry, which I judged came from a human infant. I looked about me and found, close to the forest, a helpless babe, lying quite naked upon the grasses and wailing piteously. Not far away, screened by the forest, crouched Shiegra, the lioness, intent upon devouring the infant for her evening meal.”

“And what did you do, Ak?” asked the Queen, breathlessly.

“Not much, being in a hurry to greet my nymphs. But I commanded Shiegra to lie close to the babe, and to give it her milk to quiet its hunger. And I told her to send word throughout the forest, to all beasts and reptiles, that the child should not be harmed.”

“I am glad you did thus,” said the good Queen again, in a tone of relief; but this time Necile did not echo her words, for the nymph, filled with a strange resolve, had suddenly stolen away from the group.

Swiftly her lithe form darted through the forest paths until she reached the edge of mighty Burzee, when she paused to gaze curiously about her. Never until now had she ventured so far, for the Law of the Forest had placed the nymphs in its inmost depths.

Necile knew she was breaking the Law, but the thought did not give pause to her dainty feet. She had decided to see with her own eyes this infant Ak had told of, for she had never yet beheld a child of man. All the immortals are full-grown; there are no children among them. Peering through the trees Necile saw the child lying on the grass. But now it was sweetly sleeping, having been comforted by the milk drawn from Shiegra. It was not old enough to know what peril means; if it did not feel hunger it was content.

Softly the nymph stole to the side of the babe and knelt upon the sward, her long robe of rose leaf color spreading about her like a gossamer cloud. Her lovely countenance expressed curiosity and surprise, but, most of all, a tender, womanly pity. The babe was new-born, chubby and pink. It was entirely helpless. While the nymph gazed the infant opened its eyes, smiled upon her, and stretched out two dimpled arms. In another instant Necile had caught it to her breast and was hurrying with it through the forest paths.

CHAPTER THIRD

The Adoption

The Master Woodsman suddenly rose, with knitted brows. “There is a strange presence in the Forest,” he declared. Then the Queen and her nymphs turned and saw standing before them Necile, with the sleeping infant clasped tightly in her arms and a defiant look in her deep blue eyes.

And thus for a moment they remained, the nymphs filled with surprise and consternation, but the brow of the Master Woodsman gradually clearing as he gazed intently upon the beautiful immortal who had wilfully broken the Law. Then the great Ak, to the wonder of all, laid his hand softly on Necile’s flowing locks and kissed her on her fair forehead.

“For the first time within my knowledge,” said he, gently, “a nymph has defied me and my laws; yet in my heart can I find no word of chiding. What is your desire, Necile?”

“Let me keep the child!” she answered, beginning to tremble and falling on her knees in supplication.

“Here, in the Forest of Burzee, where the human race has never yet penetrated?” questioned Ak.

“Here, in the Forest of Burzee,” replied the nymph, boldly. “It is my home, and I am weary for lack of occupation. Let me care for the babe! See how weak and helpless it is. Surely it can not harm Burzee nor the Master Woodsman of the World!”

“But the Law, child, the Law!” cried Ak, sternly.

“The Law is made by the Master Woodsman,” returned Necile; “if he bids me care for the babe he himself has saved from death, who in all the world dare oppose me?” Queen Zurline, who had listened intently to this conversation, clapped her pretty hands gleefully at the nymph’s answer.

“You are fairly trapped, O Ak!” she exclaimed, laughing. “Now, I pray you, give heed to Necile’s petition.”

The Woodsman, as was his habit when in thought, stroked his grizzled beard slowly. Then he said:

“She shall keep the babe, and I will give it my protection. But I warn you all that as this is the first time I have relaxed the Law, so shall it be the last time. Never more, to the end of the World, shall a mortal be adopted by an immortal. Otherwise would we abandon our happy existence for one of trouble and anxiety. Good night, my nymphs!”

Then Ak was gone from their midst, and Necile hurried away to her bower to rejoice over her newfound treasure.

CHAPTER FOURTH

Claus

Another day found Necile’s bower the most popular place in the Forest. The nymphs clustered around her and the child that lay asleep in her lap, with expressions of curiosity and delight. Nor were they wanting in praises for the great Ak’s kindness in allowing Necile to keep the babe and to care for it. Even the Queen came to peer into the innocent childish face and to hold a helpless, chubby fist in her own fair hand.

“What shall we call him, Necile?” she asked, smiling. “He must have a name, you know.”

“Let him be called Claus,” answered Necile, “for that means ‘a little one.’”

“Rather let him be called Neclaus,”* returned the Queen, “for that will mean ‘Necile’s little one.’”

The nymphs clapped their hands in delight, and Neclaus became the infant’s name, although Necile loved best to call him Claus, and in afterdays many of her sisters followed her example.

Necile gathered the softest moss in all the forest for Claus to lie upon, and she made his bed in her own bower. Of food the infant had no lack. The nymphs searched the forest for bell-udders, which grow upon the goa-tree and when opened are found to be filled with sweet milk. And the soft-eyed does willingly gave a share of their milk to support the little stranger, while Shiegra, the lioness, often crept stealthily into Necile’s bower and purred softly as she lay beside the babe and fed it.

A review of the Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
By Amazon Customer
First and foremost I knew by the product description this book is an adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic tale of everyone's favorite Christmas Giver and the book is without question breathtakingly beautiful. It is full of Santore's marvelous paintings which look like something Arthur Rackham would illustrate. The fairies are wonderful as are the nymphs, knooks, and the ryls who actually look like the colors they represent and they are cute funny looking creatures. But then Santore creates a world of strange and marvelous creatures who are fantastic yet very human. Looking at the great Ak who is the lord of the forest you see person who appears so very human and Necile, Santa's adoptive mother, looks very human and beautiful. The overall artwork portrayed shows mostly the fantastic world of the fairies and to a lesser extent the people of the human world. However Bessie Blithesome is a very human sweet girl who exudes joy at receiving a doll from Santa.
One of the few flaws of this book is that it is an adaptation and whole episodes are omitted from the story, namely the awgwas were omitted and what a pity they were for it would have been terrific and terrifying to have seen Santore's portrayal of the creatures. Afterall Santore's horrifying wicked witch of the west from the Wizard of Oz is one of the best portrayals of the character ever painted for current children's books today and to have see his villains for this book would have been wonderful. Also omitted from the book are the scenes with Weekum, Mayrie and her brother, and the last chapter of the book in which Santa face adversity from an encroaching civilization and industry.
It must be said the adaptor did leave in some very good sections of the book which make it more appealing to younger children and it is obvious this book is meant for the younger set The story explains why Santa Claus makes toys and why he has reindeer. Also why hang up stockings for Santa Claus? The story does explain many things and makes them accessible for modern readers. For example the episode with Mayrie features a child speaking in childlike tones which would not be acceptable to modern readers. In the scene, in which Santa creates the first Christmas tree, a teepee is featured in the background but the language is edited for modern sensibilities as in the original text the parents of the children are called "neglectful". In this version the words are edited so as not to offend modern ears. I don't necessarily approve of changing the classics but the language in the original could be seen as offensive.
However over all as a beautifully illustrated classic it is beautiful and worth having on the shelf for collectors and for anyone who loves Christmas and Santa Claus.

A magical tale about the life of Santa Claus.
By A Customer
Santa Claus. Two simple words that can make most children smile. L. Frank Baum once again has touched the spirits of many with his tale based on the legendary Santa Claus. I remember it being read to me by my father as a young child. As an adult, it is still magical with every reading. The story tells the tale of an abandoned baby in the woods who was adopted and raised by fairies in their forest. As Claus, a mortal, grows up among the fairies and other fascinating immortals, he learns all of their ways and secrets. When he is old enough, the Great Ak takes Claus on a journey to see how humans really live. After the trip, Claus leaves the fairy's forest to live on his own, for he has decided to try and help mankind. The first toy, was a cat that he had whittled, and painted to look real. It was given to a young, lost boy to comfort him. With this gift, and the help of his immortal friends, Claus began his legend of unselfish giving. Over the years, he was named a saint by the many who he touched. There are beautiful stories and illustrations of his gift-making and giving, along with those of the obstacles that he faced, including a fierce battle between good and evil immortals. From his adoption, to the night when Santa Claus became immortal, the book comes to life in the imagination. It is a tale that will touch children, as well as adults - perfect for nighttime reading during the holidays. As the holidays approach, I again look forward to losing myself in the spirit and magic,of Santa Claus.

Be Warned - Severly Abridged Edition
By S. Lancaster
I don't typically read the editorial reviews, but in this case I was glad I did. From the School Library Journal:

"In this significantly shortened version of Baum's 1902 tale... Baum's original language, florid and wordy, has been pared down into a more readable and modern narrative. The large format, brimming with plenty of lush full- and double-page paintings... will appeal to many children."

The Amazon description is completely misleading:

"This enchanting tale, originally written more than 100 years ago by L. Frank Baum, marries all the magic and fantasy of The Wizard of Oz to the classic Christmas tale."

This is NOT Baum's original tale. If that is what you are looking for, look elsewhere. Essentially the story has been mostly cut out and replaced with beautiful illustrations. It's a nice picture book, but not much more than that. I can say from experience that children are capable of dealing with complicated language. It is simply a matter of getting them used to it. Personally, I find the "child-friendly" editions to be problematic in more than one way. Practically, what usually gets cut out are all the beautiful descriptions that help develop imagination, and all the complicated language that both conveys nuance and feeling and also helps develop a full vocabulary. Ideologically, it is demeaning; it communicates to children that they are neither capable of nor expected to rise to a high standard.
