30 Under 300... Delightful, heartwarming, and simple yet indulgent.

I LOVE this cookbook! I have been following the author Kim on various social media sites since I began my health and fitness journey a few years ago... I always loved how simple and nutrition conscious her recipes were... Other recipe creators oftentimes used outlandish ingredients that were hard to find on top of having complicated cooking processes, tools, and utensils. Kim was (and still is) the exact opposite, and that rings true for this "30 Under 300" cookbook. The recipes themselves are very simple and easy to follow/recreate in your own kitchen. I love that there is something for everyone with varying nutritional preferences (gluten free, vegan, dairy free, or simply looking to cook more mindfully). I have a HUGE sweet tooth, and these recipes satisfy that sweet tooth while keeping me in check with my nutritional goals! I also love the personal touches Kim put into this book. She even included a grocery list and some simple but crucial basic baking tips. If I had to sum it up, the vibe I got from this cookbook is: delightful, heartwarming, and simple yet indulgent. Great job, Kim! Thank you for making a cookbook for those of us who are health conscious, but still want to enjoy yummy treats and share them with our loved ones.

YOU NEED THIS DELICIOUSNESS

Having already been a big fan of Kim's recipes, I was super excited about this cookbook and it DEFINITELY did not let me down! I loveeee that the ingredients are all things that I would have on hand. No having to go to the store and buy 6 varieties of gluten free flours. No long hours soaking nuts or cooking beans, no crazy equipment needed, and there's even a section of recipes to conquer in 5 minutes or less ;)

With recipes for brownies, fudge, muffins, biscotti, parfaits, in flavors like red velvet, carrot cake, almond joy, PEANUT BUTTER, and more, there is literally something for EVERYONE in this book! With the fact that they are all allergen friendly with dairy free, gluten free, vegan and customized options, I seriously can't imagine not finding something to love in here.

New favorite cookbook!!

I can't say enough amazing things about this book!! First, the recipes are so simple, yet SO delicious. Ingredients can be found at every grocery store, and most are probably already in your kitchen. Healthy, easy, and flavorful. What more could you ask for? Second, the pictures!! The food looks completely drool-worthy....it makes it SO HARD to decide what to make next!! Next, the book is so fun to read through. There are little quotes throughout the book, and each section has its own quirky introduction. It really makes it feel like you're talking to the author about the recipes! It's well organized based on number of ingredients, simplicity, and type of baked good. Extremely well-done, and definitely my new favorite cookbook!

An anonymous benefactor on the Board, "Mr. Smith," decides to send her to college, as long as she writes to him faithfully detailing her education. Originally published in 1912, Jean Webster's coming-of-age tale continues to be relevant to young women today. Actress Kate Forges shares these months and years, from freshman to senior in college. Through a series of letters Jerusha writes to "Daddy-Long-Legs," a relationship filled with affection and respect develops, even though she is the only correspondent throughout the years. Although the narrative unfolds slowly, the language is sophisticated, highly descriptive, and witty. Jerusha's concern about social class standings may seem a bit dated to most listeners, as the reference to "Negro waiters" when she is riding the train may surprise and offend some listeners. Forbes gives an outstanding one-woman performance. Her crisp elucidation, varied intonations, and enthusiasm for this character provide a first-rate reading. A sweet story with a twist

Usually I absolutely hate novels that are supposed to be a collection of letters and/or diary entries for this simple reason, they are as transparent as saran wrap. Something along the lines of "I'm just jotting down a casual letter to inform you that I just had a terrible fight with so-and-so, here's what we said word for word complete with speaker attributes"
That's why I was so pleasantly suprised with this book. The writing is entertaining, intelligent and always realistic. That is EXACTLY how a person in their late teens, early twenties writes (I know, I'm a letter writer in that age group) and it is so refreshing to read an author who knows what she is talking about on the subject.
Judy Abbott is most certainly not a Pollyanna, she teases, gets angry and argues but she has a nice nature and always manages to patch things up. She is an orphan who writes to her mysterious benefactor whom she dubs "Daddy-Long-Legs". Because he is her fairy godmother for all purposes, she confides in him even though she knows he will never answer. The ending is marvelous with a great little twist. I think this book is great for girls 8-80 and am sorry I did not read it sooner

A Classic You Can Read in a Day

I've read this book a few times, and every time I come back to it, I can't put it down. It's short (around 200 pages) & sweet. The book was published in 1912, and is one-of-a-kind, as it consists almost entirely of letters written by Judy. Judy is an orphan from the John Grier Home, an orphange she was raised in since she was a baby. Her future seems very bleak until one day she is unexpectedly offered the opportunity for a paid college education to become an author by one of the orphanage's trustees. In return, she has to write monthly letters to the unknown trustee who is known as Mr. John Smith. She calls him "Daddy-Long-Legs" because she saw his tall shadow as he left the building. Her letters are very entertaining, and often impertinent. That is really all I want to tell of the story, but here are a couple of quotes from the book that I loved:
"It isn't the big troubles in life that require character. Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh -- I really think that requires spirit."
"I think the most necessary quality for any person to have is imagination. It makes people able to put themselves in other people's places. It makes them kind and sympathetic and understanding. It ought to be cultivated in children."

a delightful printing of a wonderful book

first, please allow me to say that i am quite enjoying these puffin classics editions of some of my favorite novels!

'daddy long legs' is the story of a young orphan girl named judy who was removed from the orphanage by an anonymous patron/guardian who sends her away to school. the trade-off for this extraction is that she must write him a letter at least once per month.

the joy in this novel is the progression and self-assurance that builds with each letter she writes to him. i will spoil none of the story, but the ending is heartwarming and will not disappoint.

having this updated printing reminds me of when i first read this in grade school/middle school. these joyful memories are priceless.

a bonus here with the puffin classics is the addition of backstory included at the end of the book. here you can learn more about the author, the story, the characters, and so much more. what a delightful thing to include!

i have purchased most of these puffin classics editions, and will certainly look for future additions to add to my collection.

Not for electric smokers

All the cooking times and temperatures are based on charcoal heat and not electric. I have an electric masterbuilt smoker and was looking for a cookbook for electrics. Book states it has 100 electric smoker recipes, did not find any. Very disappointed.

Why are all the recipe's heat source CHARCOL? I thought this was a book for Masterbuilt ELECTRIC smokers ! Is that not a little misleading?

What are you smokin', Bob?

Smokin' Bob Jensen has smoked too much! If English is your first language, you will not miss the terrible sentence structure, confusing directions, and the ridiculous typos. . For starters, there is a disclaimer on the first page. I can see why, since, "The smoker can (?) be heavy. Be very careful not to drop it on your damn foot." The directions for setting the time-to-cook repeatedly refer to temperature, instead of hours and minutes. I will quote just one sentence:"Be sure to cook the past first" (Pg 91) (should be pasta, not past). There are several sentences that make absolutely no sense!
I bought the Materbuilt smoker for my husband at Christmas. It will come out of its box today. I hope it is still under warranty, as the book says we will need a retrofit kit for the (mostly) non-working smoke tray. So, I have learned something from this book...and am sure I will continue to learn. However, $16.00 for a paperback that has not been edited, is totally in black an white, and manufactured poorly, is a rip off. (Some pages were folded into the book before they were trimmed.) In addition, Smoking' Bob wants me to download the book to take advantage of an ACTION GUIDE that will help me have the most success with cooking.....isn't that what THIS book should do??? This is painful reading. Take your head out of the smoker, Bob!!
I'm back a week later...I have now opened my Masterbuilt smoker, read the directions, and used it as well. All I can say in a short amount of time is this: do not do what Bob says. Read your smoker directions and follow them. Some of the recipes (like for chicken) are good as far as seasoning goes. Then you are on your own! NEVER put charcoal in your Masterbullt smoker!!!

This cookbook has no page numbers! It's really difficult to find the recipes you're looking for when you just have to hope you can figure out where it is in the cookbook.
Also, MULTIPLE recipes don't have the correct ingredient measurements listed. It will say " Tablespoons of butter". No where in the recipe does it actually tell you how many tablespoons to use. Whoever proof read this book should find another job

So many content errors it's madding. Missing amounts for ingredients. Misspellings that make the directions of a recipe almost useless some recipes written in ALL gram measurements the rest in volume this book is so confusing it's giving me a headache and some of the recipes with missing ingredient amount are ones that I want to make don't waste your money until all the errors are found and fixed

Succinct Babe biography

I've been on a biography kick lately. There's just something inspiring reading about the life of one of your heroes. I've seen a few TV specials on Babe Ruth, but this the first book I've read about him. It covers everything from his early life to his career to his death. It's written in a way that's both concise and thorough. All the essential facts are there without the fluff. Even though I knew a fair bit about Babe before reading, I learned a lot from this book. Definitely worth getting if you're a Babe Ruth fan wanting a succinct biography.

I don't know a lot about Babe Ruth--honestly, I just knew he played baseball, and that was about it. I was pretty intrigued by this book, however, so I picked it up. It's a pretty quick read, about 58 pages, but it did give me a good idea of his background, family life, the challenges he faced etc. It definitely gave me a better picture of Babe Ruth--beyond the label of "baseball legend." This book is very well researched and very well written... and inspirational as well. Excellent read.

was the way he was, this comes from someone who is not into psycho babel.
Pretty much indicates you can't have it all.

You Must Read This Book!

This book is very clear and concise. Straight to the point, and fills a gap that the world of martial arts needs. Coaches, fighters, martial artists alike all need to adopt the principals in this book. As a former student of Coach and Author Billy Matheny, I can say that these principals and strategies in this book are not only taught at his school, but lead by example by Mr. Matheny and by all of his students. And the great majority of his students, including myself, have enjoyed a successful life in martial arts and in our careers due to the principals we have adopted in this book. The strategic warrior philosophy is for anyone who wishes to find more success in their pursuit of martial arts, as well as other facets of their life. If that is for you, then you must read this book.

“I had more fun playing golf today than just about any other time in my life!”

Colin Koenig makes his writing debut with a subject about which he is thoroughly comfortable (and makes even the most naive reader feel the same) – Golf. For a book that steers clear of violence, weaponry, apocalyptic derring-do, fantasy and sci-fi (the de rigueur themes that titillate the public at present), Colin supplies a jet-propelled adventure on a golf course that reads so well that it vies with any mystery or thriller on the shelf.

The theme? A wager between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to play 18 holes of golf with a $100,000 prize going to the winner. But Colin leads us into the plot with some solid preparatory background information: ‘Jack Nicklaus was not insulted by the proclamation put forth by the PGA Tour's new young lion, Tiger Woods. He wasn't even a little miffed. In fact, Jack was impressed by the boldness of the statement----that Woods' primary goal was to win the most major golf tournaments in a career, a record held by Nicklaus with eighteen. Victories in majors were how pro golfers were truly measured. And it stirred the competitive nature in golf's all-time greatest player. Woods had just blown away the field at the 1997 Masters by twelve strokes. It was his first major title. This feat was even more incredible considering that Woods had shot forty on the first nine holes. He needed only thirty strokes to complete the second nine before distancing himself from everyone else over the next three days. This despite being just twenty-one years old....Nicklaus, at age fifty-seven, was a six-time Masters champion. He of course knew he was no longer the player he had been in his twenties, thirties, and even forties. Yet finishing twenty-nine strokes behind Woods seemed too large a disparity. Despite the odds, Jack hoped to someday meet Woods on an even playing field, or golf course to be exact and truly challenge this prodigy----the young man whose stated goal was to surpass Nicklaus as golf's all-time winning majors champion.’

And so Jack makes the wager - “Tiger. Would you be interested in playing one round of golf with me? Just you and me, at Augusta National?” The question was delivered in as quiet a voice as Nicklaus could manage and still be certain Tiger heard him. “Why are we whispering, Jack?” “Because I don't want anyone else to know about it, that's why,” explained Jack, with a nod toward the Woods entourage, and others who might be curious….. “I want you and I to play one round of golf, at Augusta, without cameras.... or caddies, without anyone else involved knowing about it----and for 100,000 dollars! You have 100,000 dollars to lose, don't you, Tiger?”

From that point on – through all 18 holes – Colin Koenig manages to relate all the drama of a full-fledged thriller, and the joy of reading it is that it is a wager not a war and the results are more than satisfying – on both sides. A Private Round of Golf Between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods!

What happens when Jack “The Golden Bear” Nicklaus challenges up-and-coming star Tiger Woods to a private golf match in 1997?

Author Colin Koenig explores this premise in his new book, Major Wager: The Pure Round of Golf Jack Challenged Tiger To.

The two men enter a golf course very early one hot, humid morning in the late nineties. They haven’t told anyone they’re playing this round, not even their families. They are there alone. No cameras, no crowds, no fans. Just two men playing a round of golf. But it turns into so much more.

Nicklaus is wondering if Tiger has what it takes to beat his record of 18 major victories. The kid is good, but young. Tiger is excited to play with such a golf prodigy, and curious himself how the round will go.

With witty dialogue and inside looks into the characters’ thoughts, Koenig brings these two men to life on the page: “Jack would prefer to defeat young Mr. Woods by playing well on is own, instead of relying on Tiger to screw up. Golf was no different than any other sport in this regard: The best defense is a good offense.”

Stripped of their entourage, carrying their own golf clubs, and alone, they are suddenly just two guys playing golf: “Jack and Tiger both decided to sit for a moment on the split-backed wooden bench provided at the tee box. Nicklaus lit a cigarette. Tiger bounced his ball, up and down, up and down, off the clubface of his driver.”

Koenig carries this 18-hole round of golf through the entire book. He answers questions most golf fans would want to know:
What would they talk about?
What goes on inside their heads as they play?
Can two great pros really keep this match a secret?

I enjoyed the premise of this book and the insight into what Koenig believes the characters are thinking as they play. He brings a really human element to two people we’ve all seen only in the public eye. I do think this book could do with a round of editing, to iron out some of the typos that distracted me. I’d also like to see a Forward by the author, explaining how this story idea came to be, and what research on golf he had to do.

Overall, I believe this story would be a great read for fans of golf, and other sports enthusiasts who wonder what would happen if two great men go at it in their chosen field.

A Fantasy Round Between Two Of Golf's Greatest Players

Who is the true champion in any given sport?

It’s a question that gets asked about every one-on-one sport. In boxing, is it Frazier or Ali? In tennis, McEnroe or Connors? In golf, is it the veteran Jack “Golden Bear” Nicklaus or the younger Tiger Woods? Who would win in a pure one-on-one match on any given day?
That’s the question at the heart of Colin Koenig’s thrilling golf novel, “Major Wager: The Pure Round of Golf Jack Challenged Tiger To.” Like the title conveys, it’s a fictional account of one round of golf between the man who has won the most major golf tournaments, and the likely challenger to that record. The stakes are simple. One round of 18 holes of golf between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. And to make it even more interesting, Colin Koenig sets the contest at an unknown golf course for these two great players, without any interference from onlookers. No caddies allowed either. Just Jack and Tiger and a few random squirrels and frogs for all the marbles.

Whether you’re a golf enthusiast, or just a casual fan, this fantasy match plays like a dream and a fantasy come true. Colin Koenig knows the sport of golf well and is a master at describing the layout off each unique and challenging hole, as well as the various shots along the way. When the tension is not on who will play better, it’s on keeping the whole affair secret. With this public golf course closed for the morning, Jack and Tiger make their way through a most unusually challenging course, beset by thick pines, creeks and ponds, sand traps and other course obstacles. As the two men make casual small talk and begin to bond over the three and a half hour game, they also must remain on guard in order to make it through 18 holes without the media finding out about this dream round.

Koenig knows both golfer’s style of play, describing every move they make with the precision, accuracy and skill of a great golfer:

"Woods once again walloped the ball off the tee, his body appearing as a statue-like pretzel following a tornado after the swing. Intensive power derived from precise motion. Another 300-plus yard drive, and straight as an arrow."

Nicklaus and Woods engage is cautious and at times guarded dialogue at the start but slowly bond during the round and the dialogue is pitch perfect:

"Nicklaus again marveled at the resiliency of young Mr. Woods.

“Is there any shot you can’t hit?”

Tiger proudly stuck the four iron back in his golf bag.

“There’s probably a couple,” he conceded. “I just haven’t met them yet."

There is no wasted dialogue and most of it is centered on the game itself. Meanwhile, the reader is left to ponder if these two golf legends can complete the course without anyone discovering the dream match. At one point the two men “break in” to the clubhouse to get some sustenance and, for Woods, a new hat, leaving behind notes of thanks and a few bucks to cover the cost. The ending is as exciting and satisfying as any major championship you’ve ever seen.

It’s a hole-in-one of a book that will leave you pondering other dream match-ups.
