Kings of the Road: A Journey into the Heart of British Cycling, by Robert Dineen

Amateur cycling in the UK has never been so popular and the interest is ever growing. In the wake of Bradley Wiggins' success in the 2012 Tour de France, sportives (non-competitive cycling events) attracted more than 75,000 entrants while competitive events doubled that figure.

In Kings of the Road, Robert Dineen explores this cultural shift through his own attempt on the most iconic sportive of all, the Étape du Tour. Regarded as the pinnacle of amateur cycling, the Étape follows the route of the torturous stage 18 of the 2014 Tour de France â?? Pau to Hautacam, taking in the killer climb of the Tourmalet.

This personal challenge will be offset against the backdrop of the sport's history, professional and amateur, by dramatizing its defining moments over the past 150 years and profiling (where possible) its most compelling and influential personalities.

Review
'Funny, insightful and uplifting, this is a book in two parts: a journey into the heart of cycling but also into the mind of a London-Irishman, whose efforts to gain a greater appreciation of the challenges faced by elite cyclsts involved him joining a local club to prepare to ride l'Etape du Tour... Dineen's skilful storytelling and self-deprecating nature come to the fore as he battles with the Pyrenees, hypothermia and self-doubt.' -- Garry Doyle Sunday Times 'very readable and full of hidden nuggets... If stories from British cycling's rich past float your boat then this is definitely a book for you.' -- Brendan Gallagher Tour of Britain blog 'entertaining and informative... shows just how far we have come as a nation in the sport of cycling' -- Richard Peploe Road.cc 'Dineen brings colour to the stories of long-forgotten or never-heard-ofs who were the stars of British cycling.' -- Owen Slot The Times 'I thoroughly enjoyed Robert Dineen's Kings of the Road; A Journey into the Heart of British Cycling and reading about how he has recently become a 'Mamil' (Middle Aged Man in Lycra), is addicted to carbon-fibre and Strava and is thinking now more about the monthly mileage that he has clocked up rather than the state of his bank balance!' -- Tony Doyle MBE, two-time world cycling champion and Britain's most successful ever six-day rider 'kings of the road is a very good teacher; one that educates without ever appearing to do so... the boy done good.' The Washing Machine Post 'a warts and all look at the past of British Cycling. Cycling fans should enjoy.' Cycling Uphill

Top read

Highly enjoyable read. I feared that the mix of interviews with cyclists who had achieved great things and the authors travails as a mamil training towards the Etape would jar, seeing as thousands of people do challenging sportives every year. This was not the case. The blend worked well. I think the key was that Dineen did not try to elevate his efforts to those of the interviewees. He was happy to document his many humbling moments on the bike, without it all building towards an "I'm-really-good-now" moment. By being consistently self-deprecating he is easy to identify with.

The interviews are all fascinating. A particular favourite was Tony Woodcock, in his 70s and leaving men half his age trailing. By talking to the likes of Woodcock and others connected to the Crest club in Essex, Dineen gets to the soul of British cycling. An interesting picture emerges of the old club scene leading a bit of a parallel existence to the booming sportive/Team Sky-supporting/£8k-bike-in-the-garage market. Ultimately, though, it's certainly not a story about divisions. It's about the spirit of adventure that connects everybody who loves cycling, be they Olympian or weekend warrior.

Well worth a read and a cut above most of the cycling books out the past couple of years. Recommended.

Yumminess quick, fast, and easy!!
By sugarbear
I was given the opportunity to review the book 10 MINUTE VEGAN RECIPES: The Busy Beginners Diet by Sally Primrose and I have thoroughly enjoyed it!! The book is great and loaded with a ton of nice easy to make dishes. The variety Sally brings is vast and ranges from Curries to Dressings. How awesome is that?!

What really drew me in was the fact the recipes are fairly simple and easy to make. I travel now, I meal prep, I do not care to eat out, and I need simple, easy, delicious, and quick meals; 10 MINUTE VEGAN RECIPES is the book for me.

I also concluded that one does not have to be a vegan to enjoy these meals, meat can be added if desired. I say that because my children do not like the thought of meatless meals and I enjoy chicken and turkey. However, I will eat Zucchini Noodle Salad in a heart beat without the meat!

Another bonus, after giving it some thought, this is available via eBook only. At first I was not too keen on it but quickly realized I have the book on hand at all times. Many individuals in today’s society have their phones in hand or close proximity 99.9% of the time and I just happen to be one.

Having friends over? Having unexpected guests? Having a luncheon at work? Need a quick meal like fast? Forgot to take something out to cook? Well, whip out your phone, tablet, and or iPad and skim the book for a nice, quick, and easy recipe.

Overall I am very pleased. I strongly feel this book can be the introduction that one needs to get started on their healthy and fit journey. Start slowly page by page and soak up the yumminess.

I was chosen to review this product at a discounted price in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

All Veggie, All Good
By Carletta Hill
I am by no means a Vegan however I do enjoy meals that are all or mostly veggies from time to time. We all need vegetables to get our vitamins and minerals full circle. So, I am a mom of 3 toddlers and time is of the essence. This 10 minute Vegan recipe book appealed to be a helpful book for me during the week when I need a healthy quick meal for my family. I thumbed through to see what options were available and I must say that there are some really great looking meals. I chose the Cream of Tomato soup as I am a fan of tomatoes. Though my kids are picky about some vegetables, I look for flavorful meals that would encourage them to try and or eat them more easily.

Let me start by saying that I have had can tomato soup by Campbell's before and it is pretty good to me. I like the full flavor and thickness of it because it is filling. This was what I was gauging myself with before trying The Cream of Tomato soup from the 10 Minute vegan recipe book. This soup was very satisfying. I was not disappointed by any means. I love the full tomato flavor and other spices. I will say that I did a touch of cilantro as I love the bold flavor that it gives with vegetables. This is a great meal to eat most especially during the colder months.

*Disclosure* I was given this book at a discount to review and give my honest opinion of this book.

Great recipes that will help me reach my goal of becoming a vegan!
By jlohm
I've been a vegetarian for decades and am now on the brink of becoming a vegan. Why is it taking so long? I have no time and absolutely no imagination when it comes to cooking, basically because I don't like to cook, so this is the perfect recipe book for me! I've tried several recipes already and they were all delicious, savory, quick and easy. I'm looking forward to cooking some more actually! A real game changer that will help my move to veganism just a little bit easier...

I wanted to test the '10 minute' part of this and I spent exactly 20 minutes from opening up the book, to cutting, cooking and cleaning up afterwards, so if you just take the preparing and cooking part of it, yeah, 10 mins. is about right...

I also recommend this book to anyone, not just vegans or vegetarians. You can add meat to it, but to be honest, you won't even miss it. Also great for people who have no idea what to cook for their vegans friends. My friends are a bit overwhelmed when I come over, they stress out over it. I tell them that I will always find something to eat and just not to worry about it, but they do, ridiculous actually. Anyway, this book presents no stress as the recipes are so quick and easy and most of the ingredients are already in your household anyway. Thumbs up!

A Game Changer! a must-have!
By JB Coyne
If you are an athlete or a parent of a competitive athlete, this book is a must have! Wendy breaks down the psychological component of an athlete's fears, blocks and confidence issues and provides solid solutions to break through them once and for all. Just like muscles need to be conditioned so does the mind and this book gives you the tools needed to overcome challenges in sports and (more importantly) in life as well. I HIGHLY recommend this book, worth the investment.

PREVIEW: Be Unapologetically Vegan

New vegans are often pretty socially timid when it comes to getting their needs met. Some of them act like they should apologize for inconveniencing other people, as if it’s an unfair burden to help someone who doesn’t want to slaughter animals for food.

I suggest you dump that attitude. Being vegan is awesome. You need never apologize for it. By going vegan, you’ve made a decision that’s all around better for everyone. Have no doubt about that.

Don't buy into the brainwashing that tells you you’re a high-maintenance social outcast. Don’t marginalize yourself. You’ve made an intelligent choice. You’re not a social outcast. You’re a leader. Act like one.

Many vegans adopt the mindset that being vegan puts them on the fringes of society. The thinking is that when you go vegan, you’re no longer a mainstream person. You’re weird, different, and unusual. You’re not like everyone else.

If you’ve bought into that kind of thinking, you’ve inadvertently swallowed some propaganda from the animal products industries. They devote part of their marketing budgets, both directly and through trade associations, to encourage people to marginalize vegans in this way. Why? Because veganism is a threat to their profits. So they manipulate social pressures to try to prevent more people from wanting to go that route.

It’s unfortunate that vegans buy into this kind of thinking too. I’ve certainly fallen for it at times.

Instead of seeing yourself as an outcast, get aligned with the truth. By going vegan you’ve made serious progress in improving your lifestyle, not just for your own benefit but for the benefit of animals, other people, and the world as a whole. This isn’t outcast behavior. This is leadership, plain and simple.

By graduating to veganism, you’ve put yourself at the top of the human pyramid in terms of alignment with intelligent, ethics, and conscious growth. Feel good about what you’ve accomplished, and keep learning, growing, and improving.

This isn’t a mindset that stems from arrogance or conceit. It stems from caring. Isn’t it obvious that as a vegan, you’re behaving in a more caring and compassionate way towards the planet? It’s it obvious that the world would be greatly improved if more people followed suit? Let the obviousness of that sink in.

He gave a voice to my feelings!
By Amanda C
There was so much more here than I expected. The first few pages seemed rudimentary. Stuff I already knew. Then it got deep and philosophical and really resonated with me in a multitude of unexpected ways. I recommend this book highly to vegans and to anyone considering veganism. It's short and simple, but deeply rewarding and thought provoking.

Awesome
By Julia Großkopf
I am still in the process of becoming a total vegan and this book just gave me so much encouragement to keep doing what I am doing. My situation right now is a little bit complicated because I am living with a family which isn't mine. Most of my meals are vegan. Even if I go out to eat I order a vegan meal but then there are the times my hostmom cooks for everyone and she puts so much effort in it (she even makes me a vegetarian food because until I started begin vegan I was vegetarian for already 5 yeas) so I am still eating what she cooks for me. I don't want her to be offended because i am notveating what she prepared for me although I aways feel so bad eating eggs, diary or even worse shrimp... I feel so guilty everytime i eat non-vegan food. I still didn't figure out how to explain to her that I would want to go complete vegan without making it more complicated for her or offense her. How to explain a nonvegan that you really appreciate what she is doing for u but u want to start cooking your food by yourself now. (My hostmum is convinced that she is doing the right thing with eating meat and she would always find a reason for not going vegan or not seeing vegan as healthy living and caring people). I just want her to not only accepted my decision but also understand that it's not meant to be offensive. Oh before I forget that, she is even paying for !y food. Until now I could put anything I want on the grocery list but I am worried that as a vegan there are to many things she might have too buy extra for me. (I don't want her to have more work with me or any circumstances) okay if anybody has a answer for me pleas let me know so I can fully and truly transfer to a proud vegan.

Best "how-to-become vegan" book out there, seriously!
By KRabbit
Five stars!!!! And this book is FREE-99 y'all. I love Steve Pavlina!! This was well-written, an easy read and absolutely indispensable for curious vegans. I appreciate the tone which felt like reading messages from a supportive friend. Steve's guide is educational---NOT pushy, unlike other books about veganism that often carry an undertone of condemnation, sprinkled with graphical examples for dramatic effect (and believe me, you can find drama in the films/documentaries instead). For those who are experimenting in the path of veganism, like myself, this book will help you get a jump-start and help you navigate through the *inevitable* awkward social settings (which are sooo true)! Thank you Steve, love it!

Dana's two years on a sailing ship in the 1830s makes modern hi-tech world boring.
By Judie Fernandez
Our technological world makes us forget what life was like when men, by sheer force of will and dangerous physical teamwork, could use the forces of nature to travel thousands of miles across oceans on wooden ships under fabric sails without electronics or comforts. What surprised me was the beauty of the writing by a young man in the 1830s. Dana's descriptions of raising the anchor and sails to glide out of California harbors, the four month journey trying to round Cape Horn in winter, the misery beneath decks, and the excitement as the ship headed north in the Atlantic toward home in Massachusetts created vivid scenes that still resonate in my mind. After his return home to Harvard and its law school, Dana dedicated his life to improving the slave-like lives of the sailors. I highly recommend this book to escape from our screens.

Lee Scuppers and Top Gallant
By Paying Guest
I read part of this in Jr HS, then all of it after I graduated from college; my Shakespeare teacher (38 plays in the full year course) asked me, as he read it, why so much reference to the "lee scuppers." For a beginning sailor like me, an easy answer: those are the drains that fill because of the heel of the boat away from windward.
I recall how Dana records the loss of their first crewman off South America; this, from a small crew, perhaps 15? I should re-read. Then I recall the great joy of their tea and molasses, or after reefing the topsail, some grog (with rum). The weather around Cape Horn was abysmal, with big seas and sleet and snow, but they were on their way to pick up hides dropped down from the high coasts of certain California ports. Dana observes that if the Californians ever learn to make shoes, their services will no longer be required: shipping hides, taking them around Cape Horn to New England to be made into shoes, which are then shipped around Cape Horn to be sold to the Californians.
The fear of the captain and mates, the appreciation of the cook and his tea, the hard work and danger aloft--these remain with me fifty years after reading Dana

The book I most enjoyed reading . . .
By R. B. Gearon
. . . ever! And I'm four score and eight months more.

Richard Henry Dana set out on a voyage that would take him from Boston, Massachusetts, to a California that few could identify with today. At the latter, there was no-one there! Well, not many. San Diego, for instance, was a sleepy little harbour; at least it was until his and other ships from time to time put in there, when the serious business of loading hides for Boston got under way. He even spent about six months ashore, preparing hides. Dana found even San Francisco's beautiful harbour almost devoid of human activity. Not that he would have considered that an unusual state, for he was not to know what lay ahead for it. Los Angeles was a town of 20,000 souls. And this was not so long ago: 1832-34. Crikey! Only 100 years before I was born!

The scruffy lightweight little ship Pilgrim took him round Cape Horn; seemingly without much incident, for he makes no big deal of that phase of his voyage. But we do learn from him, in amazing detail, of the day-to-day workings of, not only this vessel, but also of the Alert, the smartest ship on the Boston-California run in which he served on the return leg of his voyage. He has the ability to put us on board with himself, as if we were of the crew itself. I could feel the rope in my hands and below my feet, as I sped, with frozen fingers, to the topmost yard. I felt the cold blasts off icebergs of the Southern Ocean. I sweated in the tropic. I witnessed a brutal flogging by one captain, and suffered the indifference and wile of an uncaring other. All of this, as he an ordinary seaman, a choice he made, rather than as a passenger, which he could easily have afforded to be. His family station ashore must have been influential, for in one incident on the return leg of his voyage, he was able to face off his captain and make him back down. Which is not to say he made a habit of 'pulling rank', for this was the sole occasion we hear of his doing so.

Dana had interrupted his studies at Harvard in order to take on this voyage. As a brilliant student, he had been on course to a promising career, but finding his eyesight failing, he decided that he needed fresh air and a good dose of hard graft. Thus, he joined the crew of Pilgrim, in the forecastle -- before the mast.

I lost a deal of sleep over this account. I found it hard to put down, not least for the plain language in which Dana expresses himself so eloquently. He does not show off, by using a long word where a short one will do the job. He does not bore, with an excess of those twin abhorrences, the adjective and adverb. He does use the occasional Latin phrase, which he assumes needs no translation to English, but not excessively. Notably, to the annoyance of an earlier reviewer of the work, he uses many nautical terms, but to me, mainly a landsman, they were not only necessary, but acceptable. More than acceptable, for I learned by their use. After all, this is an account of the life of a seaman, at sea, under sail. Any term I needed defined, I found in Kindle's dictionary. Well, in the main, as it were.

In his introduction to this edition, Dana's son tells us that his father, on his return to Boston, had entrusted his trunk -- sea chest? -- to some unnamed friend. But Dana's trust proved misplaced, for the trustee somehow managed to lose it and its contents. Luckily for us, as readers, Dana had not lost the notebook in which he had kept a detailed log of his voyage, for, according to his son's account, rather than leave it in the trunk, he had hung on to it. But Richard Henry Dana makes no reference to this in his narrative. If, as I have read elsewhere, his trunk had indeed made off with his notebook, then the author must have had a phenomenal memory to have been able to recall such detail of a voyage he later wrote into what would become this fascinating book. He had made daily entries from the outset, with the purpose of writing them into an account of the voyage he was about to undertake.

When I consider that Richard Henry Dana, notwithstanding his failing eyesight, had been comfortably engaged in study at Harvard, only to interrupt that study to take on what he knew would be a rigorous life before the mast, I realise the young man must have been mightily brave. He was rewarded for his bravery, though, for with sight reinvigorated, he returned to Harvard and resumed his studies. He became a lawyer, specialising in maritime law. As a lawyer in private practice, he never forgot his fellow seamen, those he had sailed with, even others he had never met, for he often represented one or other of them, always either at reduced fee, or for no fee. He became famous, but never rich, even though in later life he successfully dipped into the political arena.

Dana rounds off his narrative with a brief account of his return visit to California, this time as a passenger. He later visited Europe and England, at which latter he promoted his book. To far greater benefit to himself, it seems, than had been the case with its original publication through his American publisher.

In this edition of the great classic, Dana's son writes an end-piece, in which he brings us up to date -- at his time of writing, early 1900s -- with the fate of certain people Dana senior had sailed with, of the two ships in which he had sailed, and of events relevant to his two years before the mast and later.

If you have, or have had, a connection with the sea, you will thrill to this account. Most will do so, even without such connection. Read it; you will enjoy it.

Finally, I allow myself a plug for my own book, a New Zealand novel, which, in part, also details a sea voyage, outward on a sloop, home on board a ketch. It is called Kohima Station, by R B Gearon, and available only for Kindle. Reviews, all five-star, appear only on Amazon UK's site.

Baseball before We Knew It: A Search for the Roots of the Game, by David Block

It may be America’s game, but no one seems to know how or when baseball really started. Theories abound, myths proliferate, but reliable information has been in short supply—until now, when Baseball before We Knew It brings fresh new evidence of baseball’s origins into play. David Block looks into the early history of the game and of the 150-year-old debate about its beginnings. He tackles one stubborn misconception after another, debunking the enduring belief that baseball descended from the English game of rounders and revealing a surprising new explanation for the most notorious myth of all—the Abner Doubleday–Cooperstown story. Block’s book takes readers on an exhilarating journey through the centuries in search of clues to the evolution of our modern National Pastime. Among his startling discoveries is a set of long-forgotten baseball rules from the 1700s. Block evaluates the originality and historical significance of the Knickerbocker rules of 1845, revisits European studies on the ancestry of baseball which indicate that the game dates back hundreds, if not thousands of years, and assembles a detailed history of games and pastimes from the Middle Ages onward that contributed to baseball’s development. In its thoroughness and reach, and its extensive descriptive bibliography of early baseball sources, this book is a unique and invaluable resource—a comprehensive, reliable, and readable account of baseball before it was America’s game.

Review
"Given North American baseball fans' nearly inexhaustible appetite for the arcana of their favourite sport, astonishingly few scholars have ever undertaken the detailed historical and anthropological research to find out where the game actually began. . . . Now, through painstaking bibliographic and archival research, on display in his extensive appendices, Block has established . . . the true forerunner of American baseball. . . . By pushing beyond baseball's reputed origins in an English children's game, David Block has discovered the game's true origins in an even older English game."—Warren Goldstein, Times Literary Supplement (Warren Goldstein Times Literary Supplement)

"The suggestion that America's Game might have originated somewhere besides America so 'inflamed passions and patriotism,' writes David Block, that the idea still burns us. . . . Block has produced a deliciously researched feast that lays this controversy to rest. . . . Block has assembled such a rich pile of evidence for the game's European origins that one might wonder why there ever was a controversy. . . . Once an American reader gets past the disappointment of discovering baseball's deep European roots, Block's book is a perfect delight. He has unearthed magnificent medieval manuscripts . . . That show that baseball is just the latest in a very long line of stick-and-ball games."—Charles Hirshberg, Sports Illustrated (Charles Hirshberg Sports Illustrated)

"As if this country doesn't have enough to worry about, it turns out America's national pastime may not even be American. At least according to Baseball before We Knew It, a new book by David Block. Block contends the origins of the game date to the mid-14th century and can be traced to northern Europe and parts of Africa. Hold on there, pal. What about good old Abner Doubleday? 'There's no evidence he even played baseball,' Block says. 'It's simply a case of people passing down stories that have never been substantiated.' Now, there's something we seem to be very good at." —Morty Ain, ESPN: The Magazine (Morty Ain ESPN: The Magazine)

"Baseball, Block convincingly argues, was not a product of rounders, and its essential form had already been established by the late 18th century. Where, then, did baseball come from? In search of an answer, Block, a retired systems analyst and an antiquarian book collector, has attacked baseball's literary record with methodical zeal. The result is a joyfully discursive romp through the history of ball sports and a compelling new theory of the game's origins."—New York Times Book Review (New York Times Book Review)

“Block is so thorough in his research, so meticulous in documenting his sources, and so generous in acknowledging his predecessors that it’s hard to imagine anyone having done more impressive work on this subject--ever.”—David Shiner, Elysian Fields Quarterly (David Shiner Elysian Fields Quarterly)

"Baseball before We Knew It is a rare piece of historical research that transforms the historical landscape. It is also elegantly written and lightened with a subtle humor. No one who makes any claim to being a baseball historian or a student of the game can go forward without Block's stunning work."—Sports Literature Association (Sports Literature Association)

"Block's book obviates the need for any other analysis of baseball's origins and roots. Including the illustrations that go back to the 14th-century manuscripts in the Bodleian Library emphasizing pre-Civil War sources, this one volume contains everythingregarding the history of the origin of the American national pastime. Myths are debunked, fables are demystified, and in the end one is left with a comprehensive and convincing historical record."—Choice (Choice)

"This is without question the book for anyone at all interested in the history of the world's greatest game or, for that matter, in the manufacture of history."—Boston Globe (Boston Globe)

“To quote from no less an expert than John Thorn, Block has created a knowledge base for the origins of baseball on which all future research will rely. That’s a big claim, but if you read Baseball Before We Knew It, you’ll know it’s correct.”— John Shiffert, www.baseball19to21.com (John Shiffert www.baseball19to21.com)

“Baseball before We Knew It is a magnificent piece of work that puts an end to the myths and errors that have clouded our understanding of where and how our national game began and developed. This definitely settled, we are now also clear about the source and cause of the previous notions—altogether a masterpiece of research agreeably presented.”—Jacques Barzun, author of From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life—1500 to the Present (Jacques Barzun)

“Baseball before We Knew It is an important book, erudite, entertaining and truly groundbreaking. David Block goes beyond debunking the game’s creation myths to creating a knowledge base upon which all future research will rely. This brilliant book takes a place on my shelf alongside Seymour, Voigt, and Henderson.”—John Thorn, editor of Total Baseball (John Thorn)

“A well-researched, fascinating book that examines the history of our national pastime from its earliest origins through its evolution into the modern game.”—Tom Tarapacki, Polish American Journal (Tom Tarapacki Polish American Journal)

“An amusing and comprehensive look at the surprisingly long and complex lineage of our national pastime. The book is dizzyingly detailed in spots, with exhaustive descriptions of dozens of old English ballgames, but as the author plumbs the murky depths of the game’s origins, he turns up bizarre footnotes and conspiracies and unravels the agendas of earlier baseball historians.”—American Heritage (American Heritage)

“Not content with merely demolishing the credibility of Abner Doubleday and Cooperstown once again, Block discerns baseball’s true origins in a British children’s game of the early 18th century. Breaking new ground
By Richard Hershberger
I was initially not going to write a review of this book, as there are already many justly praising it. The one negative review, however, saying that this book has little in it not in Harold Peterson's "The Man Who Invented Baseball" (published over thirty years ago) gave me pause. On one level it is clearly true. I remember as a boy my father telling me about Alexander Cartwright and the New York Knickerbockers, and dismissing the Abner Doubleday story. I don't know that he read Peterson's book, but the timing is right and Peterson did popularize the Cartwright story. This provoked me to dig out my out copy of Peterson and read it for the first time in many years. I can now definitively assure you that David Block is most certainly not just recycling Peterson's book.

They agree that there were earlier versions of ball-and-stick games, which they discuss, and that the version of the game that has come down to us as modern baseball was standardized by the Knickerbocker club.

That may make it look like they have similar theses, but they really do not. Peterson's thesis is right there in his title: someone invented baseball and he knows who it was. Earlier versions were fundamentally different from the Knickerbocker game, and the Knickerbocker game was the product one man's flash of genius. Earlier games are discussed, but they don't really matter, since the Knickerbocker game is taken as being so different. The discussions of earlier games mostly are there to discredit the Doubleday story, which typically has predecessor games being even more primitive than in the Cartwright story

Block's goal is also named in his title: he is seeking baseball's roots. The Knickerbocker game is part of a story that began centuries earlier. Earlier versions aren't a distraction, they are the story. Only by knowing what came before can we see what the Knickerbockers did and didn't do: what parts of their game were selections from an existing menu of options and what parts were true innovations. It turns out to be far more interesting than any myth of a heroic lone genius.

Why should we believe Block rather than Peterson? Peterson's is a book with no footnotes, but with detailed descriptions of events down to quoted conversations. Even if the events were found in histories that actually cited sources, we would know that this is fiction. Peterson probably considered it putting a human face on the story. I consider it making stuff up. He does that a lot. The chapters on early ball-and-stick games are a mish-mash of solid data, poorly understood facts, and utter fiction. So it is that he can, on adjacent pages, give two contradictory accounts of the origin of cricket. He has a story to tell and he isn't going to let facts get in the way. Block's book started out as an annotated bibliography of early baseball sources and Block is meticulous about documentation. When he is forced to interpret beyond the actual evidence he tells us this. You come away knowing exactly what is really known and what is educated guesswork. It is honest history.

I rarely give five stars in my reviews, but I have no qualms about doing so here. The book is quite simply the important book on the subject published in my lifetime. It may be surpassed some day, but that day isn't likely to be soon. For the foreseeable future this is the one book to own if you have any interest in the origins of baseball.

Fascinating Study of Baseball's Mist-Shrouded Origins
By Theo Logos
Baseball is a "what have you done for me lately?" kind of game, which in part may explain how little has been written about the game's earliest origins. Add that to the facts that many baseball fans are satisfied to believe the false myth (discredited almost from the point that it was first put forward) that Abner Doubleday invented baseball out of whole clothe in Cooperstown, New York, and that some fans are only interested in baseball history that can be explained through statistics, and you begin to understand why the game's true origins have been so widely ignored.

David Block steps into this breach with a well researched, fascinating book that examines the history of our National pastime from its earliest origins through its evolution into the modern game. His original intent was simply to compile a bibliography of all the books and sources that touch on this subject, and indeed, nearly half the length of `Baseball Before We Knew It' is taken up with his bibliography and various appendices. He spends several chapters debunking not only the already thoroughly debunked Doubleday myth, but also challenging the more widely accepted theory that baseball evolved from the English game of rounders, and even calling into question how important Alexander Cartwright actually was in formulating the earliest rules of the official American game.

The most fascinating part of Block's book is his delving into the early European origins of Baseball. Much of his research here is not original, but he does have some interesting original interpretations of the scant evidence that can be gleaned from these early references to games that seem to have a family resemblance to baseball. In his last chapter he presents a theoretical flowchart of baseball's evolution from the Medieval European ball game called Longball, complete with all the various ball games that seemed to influence it and branch off from it on its way to becoming our modern game of American Baseball.

Block admits that his book is far from the last word on the subject, but hopes that it will reinvigorate fans interest in the often overlooked history of the game's origins. His extensive bibliography provides many clues for continued reading on the subject, though many of the cited sources are obviously rare and hard to find. `Baseball Before We Knew It' is a great contribution to the literature of the history of a game which is uniquely tied to the culture and history of the United States, and should be appreciated not only by the serious baseball fan, but by all of those with an interest in American cultural history.

David Block Has Set New Standard For Early Baseball Research
By Peter Mancuso
The scope and depth of Block's research is staggering. Yet, his organization and style of writing are clear and engaging. Both his research and his writing make this a great work of integrity; the integrity to delve so far and wide, the integrity to personally view each source (of which there are hundreds), the integrity to correct the mistakes of previous findings even when it subtracted support for the author's own findings, and most of all, the integrity to resist conjecture.

The book's bibliography of nearly 60 pages is in itself a book, containing hundreds of literary and other references to baseball between the years 1450 and 1861. The author not only provides informative notes on the baseball related content of the individual sources, but often makes engaging comments on the rarity, location or visual aspects of the source such as illustrations, diagrams and other characteristics of particular works.

There is even a chapter which the author, generously and wisely, included that was contributed by his brother Philip. If you think that it is enough to know that the Abner Doubleday-Inventor of Baseball is just a worn out myth, think again. This chapter sheds a whole new light on the whole affair, and gives additional insight into this portion of our National Pastime's "history."

David is more than just kind to those who's shoulders he admittingly stood upon. He not only is quick to acknowledge their pioneering work, but when his own work effectively nullifies the work of those who labored before him, he is quick to offer additional insights into how erroneous conclusions may have been reached and is just as quick to point out that his predecessors did not have the modern technological research tools available to him.

This book belongs on the shelves of a wide variety of readers; from researchers and scholars to plain old baseball fans (who are sometimes also researchers and scholars). No serious discussion or writing about the early origins of baseball for the next hundred years will omit David Block's, "Baseball before We Knew It."

    Who Is Daniel Cook?
    By Sue Caldwell
If you really want to learn how to do slow cooker freezer meals right, you need to visit a site called Who Needs a Cape.

The recipes in this book were all taken from other people's websites, many from the site noted above, and dumped into this book without any attribution to the sources. There are no color pictures, so none of the recipes look very appetizing. Many of the recipes are just plain wrong in that they consist of the instructions to just put everything in the slow cooker at once. Just glance at the owner's guide that came with your slow cooker and you'll realize that's not right. You can't do that with dairy products, for example, and it's not wise with pasta or smaller chunks of potatoes or frozen vegetables. There is no index, so if you're wondering what to do with that pork loin that was on sale you won't be able to look up that ingredient in this book. There is no table of contents, so the book is not divided up into any reasonably searchable categories like chicken, pork, beef, Mexican, soups, stews... I mean, this is minor stuff I would expect from any cookbook, but no thought at all seemed to be put into this book. Is Daniel Cook even a real person?

Great concept and good for inspiration but lots of the recipes I would not try, without massively tweaking for healthier meals
    By Roux
Ok firstly I want to say that I absolutely love the concept of prepacking all your meals into freezer bags a few months worth to be exact and dump them into the freezer, especially when you are short on time and working to a tight budget. Then the night before just grab a meal from the freezer and in the morning just throw the whole contents of the bag into the crockpot and come home to a gorgeous hot cooked meal. That is pretty amazing, and I will be doing this more often when I get a large chest freezer to accommodate all the food. For me I would use them more so in the winter/ autumn months when it's cold out and you have a big pot of stew or hearty soups. Looking through the 110 recipes, many I would not try as there are some which I think have too much added sugar or recipes where you would use branded jars which are highly processed. I would stick to the stews with simple ingredients as that's my style of home cooking. All in all not a bad book for inspiration. This book was free in exchange for a honest and unbiased review.
