I'm not saying I'm the smartest or most-knowledgeable, but growing up the way I did and coaching for twenty years has taught me a variety of things.

Lessons to be Learned by Coaching Parents

In reading Threw These Eyes by Doug Brainard, my first thought was that this man is a truly good father. Although this book is written by a man with ten years of coaching experience, I was impressed with his advice that applies to life as well as sports. Today, we hear much about personal life coaches; these individuals used to simply be called counselors but are now accepted as being able to offer expert guidance to individuals seeking certain goals in life. Yes, the author offers his expertise on the right way to be Little League coaching parents, but if one reads the book in depth, there are gems of wisdom apart from this. As you read, look for these gems!
In the first chapter, Mr. Brainard discusses all the preparatory hours invested long before the first pitch of a Little League game is made. This includes: creating the budget, the game and practice schedules, and raising money for equipment and uniforms. He emphasizes the role of moms, suggesting that in addition to working concession stands and watching children, more of them should be coaching. He advises dads to show appreciation to their wives for all that they do by taking them out to eat, buying them jewelry, and helping out at both the house and the park. Such suggestions are gems in this reviewer's mind!
Parents are told to get their children to the park on time and to recycle their trash whether at the park or at home. As far as older people are concerned, he wisely says that our kids need to be around them to gain from their past experiences. In other cultures, seniors are held in the highest esteem--not put out to pasture. Are these not gems to think about?
In discussing dads as coaches, Mr. Brainard mentions that they are often harder on their own children than others. This needs to be kept in proper balance. He advises the dads to have fun, excite the minds of their children and to praise them for working hard and hustling. He believes that the coach should show compassion and patience to all players, remembering that some may not get much attention at home.
Now we get into the actual team coaching. Of course, since I want readers to purchase this small but very well-written and easy-to-understand book, I won't go into detailed teachings; however, the vast experience of the author comes through very clearly. He goes over the subjects of hitting, fielding, the importance of practice and practices, and the playing of a game which he says mirrors life. Coaches, parents, and players have to be adaptable, flexible, and learn how to get along with others--even the umpires--whether they win or lose.
The last chapter is devoted to all-stars which Mr. Brainard says always stirs up controversy. Players and parents show disappointment on choices made. Hearts will be broken, but if children of enthusiastic parents don't make the team one year, hopefully that will make them try harder the next year. Parents need to remember that their children mimic their actions, so make sure a good example is set. The author states that children are a product of their environment. Doesn't this apply to life in general as well as sports?
I must admit the title of this book "threw" me but, once I read the book, I understood why he used the title of "Threw These Eyes." It is a powerful play on words. I recommend this book to parents, coaching parents, teachers, and all caregivers of children. This book belongs in school libraries.

Excellent advice in this book! I read this, and tried some tips from the book with my grandson (starts little league) and not only has he improved but it has helped me also. Author puts it in perspective," its a game". Children should have fun and parents/grandparents should also. We win a few games, which is great, but we also
lose a few games, it happens. This book will not only make your child a better ballplayer, but will also make him/her a better sportsperson.I recommend this book to everyone that goes to the ballpark with their child either for practice (which is most important) or for the Saturday morning game day.

Oh how I remember the ride home after the game, a wasn't good. Dad would go over everything I did wrong.The book took me back to my childhood several times. I knew my dad loved me, but he was such a nut about sports. He was a great athlete, and expected me to be the same, I wasn't. I tried hard, and that's all that mattered to me. The fun was taken out of it for me. This book covers a lot of different topics on baseball, and life. All you dads need to take a look at this book.Moms will like it to. Lee
